With new album ‘Retribution’ due Nov 18th, experimental Inuk artist Tanya Tagaq is sharing her new video for ‘Centre’, a hip-hop song about molecular biology and menstruation, featuring Canadian rapper Shad. The video was animated by fellow Canadian artist Chad VanGaalen.

Tagaq shed some light on the collaboration with Chad VanGaalen as she said “I always knew I wanted to work with Chad because I’ve admired his work from afar for years. I wasn’t expecting it to turn out this well, where he was going to exactly exemplify every single facet of what we were trying to express in an otherworldly, fantastically, logical dimension. I’ve never felt my work so accurately visually embodied.”

And in the words of Chad VanGaalen himself, “I was really lead on by the intro Shad rap at the beginning into the abyss of cosmic pleasure realms. It was my mission to bring those words to life and not understate what they both were doing with the song. Truth be told, I would have enjoyed having a full year to work on it, but the world doesn’t wait for oil paint anymore.”

Tagaq follows up her Polaris Prize winning album Animism with Retribution. Set for release on November 18th in Europe (October 21st in North America), it’s an even more musically aggressive, more aggressively political, more challenging, more spine tingling, more powerful masterpiece. This album is a cohesive, whole statement. Why sugarcoat it? This album is about rape: rape of women, rape of the land, rape of children, despoiling of traditional lands without consent.
