Men in the Sky (MITS) is a British-Canadian collaboration between founder Gary Roberts (guitar and synths) and Simon Mawson (vocals), Gavin Thomas (vocals) and Chad Montgomery (guitars).
A chance meeting in a rehearsal space led to Men In The Sky forming a partnership with legendary Factory Records’ lead engineer Michael Johnson, credited on the biggest selling 12 inch single of all time, “Blue Monday” and the iconic ‘Closer’ by Joy Division. Johnson has produced their latest single ‘If I go’.
Fusing atmospheric synth melodies with driving guitars, Men in the Sky produce innovative electronica that draws as much from the jazz-blues of Jeff Beck and the funk of Chic as it does from classic British New Wave. The band’s eloquent production aesthetic echoes the classic 1980s output of New Order and the iconic work of super-producer Trevor Horn, while the band’s guitars recall Depeche Mode’s venture into rockier, grittier territory in the late 80s and early 90s.
“Whether they like it or not, Men In The Sky will on this offering be compared toNew Order on many occasions. It is obviously no bad thing and given that they worked with Factory Records lead engineer Michael Johnson (Blue Monday, Closer) it’s hardly surprising, and with the Mancunian legends no longer a permanent fixture their timing couldn’t really be better. Echoing the New Order sound, mostly notably from their Republic and Get Ready periods they also throw in elements of Pet Shop Boys and Delphic to create something rather wonderful.” Louder Than War
“Eighties bred synths immediately grasp attention around the first sample of the release, their touch crystalline but soon sharing a varied embrace of melodies, acidic and elegant.” Ringmaster Review
