While some say there is madness in the music, others can say there is music in the madness. Whichever you agree with, one thing is for sure; Thurston Moore is a mind behind the music/madness. And now he has teamed up with jazz/freeform drummer Tom Surgal. Well, he did in 1994, when this recording was made.

More of a free form of the mind as well as the music, ‘Klangfarbenmelodie . . And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv’, done in three parts, these tracks are dissonance incarnate and sonically asymmetrical, this trilogy of freeform meaning is purposefully left to interpretation and left to the senses of the individual resulting in music in it’s truest, guttural form.

The vinyl edition of ‘Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv’ sold out quickly, but the digital edition is available via Bandcamp.

About Thurston Moore and Tom Surgal
Famed Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore and free jazz drummer Tom Surgal have released their album ‘Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv’ on white vinyl and also digitally. Originally released as a limited edition CD in 1995 but only in New Zealand, this is the first time these recordings are available either digitally or on vinyl. This new edition was released on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl by London-based Glass Modern Records.

On this live recording, Moore and Surgal deliver a blistering noise set, in keeping with the aesthetic of New Zealand noise label Corpus Hermeticum, who released the original CD. This recording was the start of a budding collaboration between Moore and Surgal that saw them release music together again in 1996, 2000, and 2015, not to mention their joint release with Beck in 2000.

Bruce Russell of Corpus Hermeticum and New Zealand outfit Dead C edited these tracks for the new vinyl release, as well as contributing new liner notes.

This lo-fi live performance, recorded in 1994, is candidly charming, revealing Moore’s interest in freeform improvisation. His guitar noise peaks in ways so distinct that many parts could be mistaken for a live recording from Sonic Youth’s heady and chaotic ’80s period.

Thurston Moore has been at the forefront of the alternative rock scene since the time he emerged as an artist. In 1980, he founded Sonic Youth with Kim Gordon, turning on an entire generation to experimental rock n’ roll that defied the status quo. The band’s importance in rock history is undeniable.

Recommended for anyone interested in Thurston Moore’s legacy of avant-garde music and writing, this live album represents an interesting chapter in his musical life, spanning from his Sonic Youth days to his solo work, his varied collaborations and fully out-of-the-box recordings over the years.

“The listener should not expect the sweet psychedelic pop of his Psychic Hearts album… more akin to the Blue Humans — with whom drummer Surgal began — and also seems influenced by such underground acts as Fushitsusha and the Dead C”
– AllMusic

“The chaos and raw energy of early ’80s Sonic Youth. It’s the sound of sharply planing guitar dynamics finding an echo chamber in the quicksilver drumming and cymbals scintillation. This heady collaboration is wild, yet tight as Surgal whips up a whitecaps churn at the drum kit, never stopping for a reprieve. Moore shaves off extended, smoldering and flaming guitar tones, bending the notes to his will, like an expert artisan tortuously forging a burnished blade”
– Big Takeover Magazine

“His innovative playing seems as intuitive as breathing”
– The Guardian

“A mind-bending noise experience. Here we see Moore swing out far afield from his usual structured songs to something very improvisational and impetuous, perhaps guiding and perhaps being guided by the brilliant drum explorations of Tom Surgal. This release will come as a great welcome surprise, a gem to be uncovered even by die-hard Sonic Youth fans”
