Liverpool genre bending risers Bonk! release their highly anticipated debut EP, ‘The Act Of Doing It’.
With a sound described as a fusion of funk, psychedelic, jazz-rock and even undertones of post-punk, Bonk! capture a fiercely unique, at times dark and others joyous but always vibrant and striking musical approach.
Produced by the esteemed Jim Spencer, known for his work with acclaimed artists such as New Order, Johnny Marr, The Charlatans, Tim Burgess, The Vaccines, and Liam Gallagher, the EPs 4 tracks showcase a striking depth and variety to their sporadic yet cohesive sound. From the bright, long jazz-rock instrumental breaks, choppy tempo changes, intense jazz chord progressions of ‘Fridge Lightbulb’, to the Overbearing post-punk tone and swirling synths of ‘Safety In Numbers’, to the light a buoyant melodies of ‘Wave’, the bands sound pallet remains solid whilst they display a exuberant musical freedom. An exhilarating musical journey that captures the essence of their dynamic live performances.
Speaking about the EP, the band explain: “These tracks are, I think, the best representation of the last two years of Bonk! And the whole point of the EP was to bookend that chapter as a band.
We recorded the EP live. So much of who we are as a band comes from playing live music and we wanted it to reflect that. All the main parts were recorded at the same time, in the same room by yours truly. We think our music sounds better when there’s a good chance we could mess it up at any given moment.”
Bonk! have quickly become a fixture in the Northern music scene, garnering praise for their innovative approach and boundless creativity. Drawing comparisons to influential bands like King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Yin Yin, Black MIDI, RHCP, HENGE, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Bonk! has established a dedicated following thanks to their high-energy performances and commitment to authenticity.
With early support from BBC Introducing Merseyside and Amazing Radio, Bonk! appeared at Liverpool’s Official Eurovision Showcase stage, the official afterparty for the Liverpool International Jazz Festival, and the official after party for “The Comet Is Coming” show in Liverpool.
With their debut 4 track, the band showcase exactly what makes them such an exciting and unique prospect in style.
