Alternative electro-soul artist FEM du lit will release their new single, ‘Cold Cold World’. The single is the third single off FEM du lit’s upcoming debut album ‘Stigmata’ (due for release in February 2025). The soulful ballad is about the stigma of queerness–of homosexuality being perceived as an impurity–and ruptures in family relationships that ensue.
FEM du lit tells the story of homophobia rooting itself in Congolese culture as an infection, stating “Contamination’s gotten so tough. Distilled love cannot be the answer”. Vocals resembling Anita Baker, the single spotlights anti-religious themes from the album and showcases FEM du lit’s bilingual lyricism. The track ends with an intimate French poem spoken over a bolero melody, describing grief and pericardial effusion (or flooding of the heart)–a unique way of depicting patrilineal heartbreak. The afro-futuristic spin on production adds to the elemental feeling of drowning a broken heart.
