Not a track that boldly announces it’s arrival but a sleeper song that creeps up behind you and puts it’s hand on your shoulder. A soft track with a lucid video that takes you for a gentle ride like the memorable pop songs of old.
About ‘Love Is Only What We Are’
Love Is Only What We Are, the debut single from multi-instrumentalist and producer Matthew Nowhere, is a powerful, soulfully authentic homage to the greatest songs of the 1980s.
With sounds reminiscent of Psychedelic Furs, New Order and Depeche Mode at their darkest, combined with the sophistication of early Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno, instead of being a pastiche or simple imitation, the song also manages to be totally modern – evoking nostalgia for the deeper longings and changing emotional landscapes that defined that era.
‘This song is really about longing… the deep and sometimes indescribable yearning we all have for love, for real authentic connection. It’s interesting – my job as an artist is to try and harness that longing, and give it shape, sounds, texture. The chorus is then an affirmation that actually, that longing is not a need or a lack… it’s actually a seed that carries with it the possibility of growing into exactly the love we are looking for.’
‘In the video, I play with this idea as well. The black and white images of seeds in the first part of the song later blossom into these vivid, colorful, moving flowers. A similar idea is expressed by how inside of the black and white imagery of me singing, there is also this full color version, moving around, roiling, longing to escape and express…’

Originally from the San Francisco Area, Matthew Nowhere has been a staple in the local Kirtan (Indian devotional folk music) scene since the early 2000s, while simultaneously developing his own eclectic sound. He has mostly been interested in creating art for art’s sake, and sharing with a small group of friends, family, and fans. Now, he has embarked on a new journey, driven by a passion to connect in a deeper way, and he has begun to share his deeply authentic music with a growing audience. He currently resides in Nevada County, California, nestled into the evergreen forests of the Sierra Foothills.
