Whitney Feinmore is a singer-songwriter originally from Tulsey Town, Oklahoma. With an ethereal vocal presence and poetic honest lyrics, Feinmore has created a unique sound that combines soft indie music with country, alternative, light rock, and pop.

Feinmore currently resides in Nashville, TN, where she continues to explore her alluring and introspective sound.

At its heart, “New Normal” is an honest ballad infused with acoustic guitars, a thumping bass drum, and a slightly melancholy undertone. It’s a little bit of Phoebe Bridgers, a tingle of Taylor Swift, and a pinch of Aly & AJ, but at its heart… “New Normal” is a self-assured statement, a warm ballad worth swimming in.

As Feinmore’s vocals enter, her doubled tracks thicken the mix, creating a syrupy soprano texture overtop the singer-songwriter-type beat making for an alluring introduction.

What we thought was about to be a typical ballad has been turned on its head in just one phrase. Whitney Feinmore’s “New Normal” begs the important question- What happens to those Sunday mornings when the old habit energy is gone? And…What do you do when you feel the same, but everyone around you begins to tilt their heads just a little bit differently?

Later on, this line leads us into the heart-hurt phrase, a standstill moment: “I’m still that same kid- but maybe not to you”.

Once the chorus hits, our ears are treated to an unexpected sonic combination: The drum kit and acoustic guitars mingle with a countermelody in the form of a smooth synth. The resulting texture is nostalgic, tickling our brains in the same way the intro to Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” does.

At the three-quarter point in the song, Feinmore begins wishing them well. Perhaps this is the sweetest part of the tune, this section feels warm, self-assured, and uninhibited. The backing vocals and harmonies are mellow as if recorded in a sun-lit underwater scene. Out of this feeling the final mantra emerges – “I’m done running, running from everything”.

The song fades out, and we’re left with orchestral strings and a settled feeling.

“New Normal” is about people’s assumptions and not letting those define you. It’s about me learning to love myself for who I am and being unapologetic about that.”

Q&A

What feeling do you want your listeners to come away with once they hear “New Normal”?

If the song resonates with them then I hope they feel a little less alone. When it comes to mental health something that has helped me is knowing that I’m not the only one that’s going through it.

What was your recording experience like with the harmonies and backing vocals in this one?

I love harmonies! Very obsessed with them. Maybe that’s from growing up in the church and singing with groups/choir or from listening to Kansas, Chicago, America with my dad. So all that being said it was important for me to add harmonies to this track.

If “New Normal” were a shade/color, what color would it be?

Like a dark blue. It’s pretty but also can be seen as a moody/sad color

What was it like working with Preston Cochran?

Preston is great! Such a talented guy. He’s always down to hear my ideas and never makes me feel dumb for throwing crazy ideas out there. He’s super collaborative and it’s been so fun working with him.

What does your vocal warm-up routine look like?

Oooof. I should definitely be warming up more than I do! Ha! But when I do warm up it consists of a lot of embarrassing sounds/noises or blowing through a straw. I know it’s weird right? But it helps.

Was it intimidating to pen and release a song so close to the heart?

It wasn’t hard to write it necessarily but it was definitely a bit nerve wracking on release day. I’m trying to push myself to be more honest in my lyrics and not worry so much about stepping on toes or offending people. Just out here trying to tell my story.
