- After The Rain (ft. Margarita Monet & Derek Sherinian) ERANAËS 5:01
With the single “After The Rain” (feat. Margarita Monet & Derek Sherinian), released on 10/6/2022 via Dr. Music Records, accompanied by a music video with subtle visuals, ERANAËS have created a remarkable mix of Melodic and Progressive Metal, bringing the serious topic of child abuse to the fore with profound lyrics. Inspired by Arjen Lucassen’s Star One, mastermind Stephan Lipp (ex-Second Reign) kicked off his solo project to create extraordinary sound cosmos with top-class guest musicians, each bringing their character and playing style to the table. For “After The Rain”, the Swiss musician has gained the support of Edge Of Paradise vocalist Margarita Monet and keyboard wizard Derek Sherinian.
But the other members with Eluveitie drummer Alain Ackermann and guitarist Simon Burri (Rage Of Light, Vorax, Sinverse) are also quite impressive. Producer Mack Schildknecht (China, The Three Sum, Fueled By Grace) was not only twisting the knobs but also contributing bass. Chris Beyerlein from Stem Masters (Schandmaul, Fiddler’s Green, Stahlmann) subsequently provided the finishing touches to the mastering with his tight, tidy and powerful, imposing sound.
Even the single cover is not up to standard, showing a painting by Swiss artist Christophe Terraz, tackling the oppressive subject with his very own imagery. Despite the severe background, all players’ particular interaction makes this single a unique musical experience. Thanks to its strong catchiness, the song immediately gets stuck in the head and more than deserves massive attention from fans and media.
Musically, the poignant track combines vocalist Stephan Lipp’s love of catchy, hook-driven Melodic Rock while flirting intensely with Progressive Metal elements. In the lyrics of “After The Rain”, ERANAËS take on the hard-hitting subject of psychological and physical abuse of children. Since the first verse is about a boy and the second is about a girl, it was apparent to start looking for a suitable female voice for the second part, which was found in Margarita Monet.
The US-American was ideally with her band Edge Of Paradise recording their new album at the West Valley Recording Studio (Halestorm, Bon Jovi, In Flames) in Los Angeles and could contribute her vocal part on short notice uncomplicated. For the keyboards, none other than Derek Sherinian was won over, who, besides his excellent solo albums, is best known for his collaborations with Dream Theater, Joe Bonamassa, Whitesnake, Zakk Wylde, Sons Of Apollo or Alice Cooper. With his unique style and terrific solo, the exceptional keyboardist gives the single masterful shine.
With the music video, ERANAËS succeeds in transposing the harrowing story into impressive imagery that makes the horror of child abuse visually clear through hints and visual cross-references, primarily through the abstract and surreal sceneries, without making the two children in the video clip morally vulnerable. Subtly, the oppressive reality is cleverly conveyed here. The song’s first verse intends to show the absurd situation in which a person is supposed to protect one but incomprehensibly turns against one with active respectively passive aggression. The second one illustrates the cycle starting over and over again, from which there is no way to escape or break out.
The finale shows a dream and mental world, the inner escape into a fantasy world, ultimately caught up again and again by reality. Furthermore, the single features a second version recorded only by Stephan Lipp and his Swiss musicians. Here Alain Schneble contributed a soulful guitar solo excellently reflecting the tender vulnerability but also the inner emotional chaos of the protagonists. But that’s not all. On 12/08/2022 follows “After The Rain” (Piano Version), another softer but no less intense version of the song as a single, which also includes an additional orchestral version.
The release of these remarkable yet thematically oppressive debut singles will be followed by more music from ERANAËS in the coming year. A few songs are already written, only waiting to be recorded. Let’s be surprised who will be involved in the upcoming songs. For the moment, let’s enjoy the outstanding musical quality of “After The Rain” (feat. Margarita Monet & Derek Sherinian) and give due attention to the very first ERANAËS chapter.
