Today alt-rock band Dirty Blonde release new single ‘Northern Twang’. Leopard print, red lipstick, and leather jackets galore, the release is also accompanied by a music video showing off the band’s strong aesthetic. ‘Northern Twang’ marks a bold return for the duo, offering a dark and seductive sound that pushes the boundaries of their gritty alt-rock style. Listening to Kings of Leon whilst writing the track, the band captured their bluesy rock sound whilst putting emphasis on the riffs.

Manchester’s Dirty Blonde are a blonde-bombshell alt-rock duo, fronted by the powerhouse pairing of Ailis Mackay (vocals, guitar, drums) and Hayley Tait (guitar, backing vocals). Since forming in January 2023, they’ve shared the stage with acts such as Frank Carter and the Sex Pistols, The Lottery Winners, Cast, The Subways, and The K’s. Their debut EP, Favourite Record quickly grabbed the attention of tastemakers at BBC Radio 1 and Radio X, landing spots on major Spotify playlists, and scoring a video feature on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch. Nels Hylton labelled the band “One of the most exciting bands to come through Future Alternative. A two piece with the world at their feet.”

The band will also be launching their new YouTube series titled In Bed With Dirty Blonde which sees the duo talking through their songwriting techniques and other band anecdotes. More details on this to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Speaking of their new single, ‘Northern Twang’ they say, “‘This was the first Dirty Blonde song we ever wrote. It’s about those early relationships where, even though you know things aren’t right, you convince yourself otherwise because you’re so into the person. It’s all about overlooking red flags just because someone’s fit”

This new single captures the dangerous allure of infatuation, blending husky vocals with shimmering guitar riffs. The song explores the feeling of losing control when you’re under someone’s spell while still being painfully aware of it. This tension highlights the need to vent to friends, with lines like “He’s the devil and his mates as well,” reflecting the frustration of being trapped in a tormenting love you can’t escape. The song’s driving energy and infectious hooks signal an exciting evolution for the band. “We wanted to capture that reckless, intoxicating feeling of obsession, but also the moments when you’re fully aware it’s happening and can’t stop yourself from ranting about it,” the duo continue.

This summer, Dirty Blonde hit the festival circuit hard, tearing up over 20 stages, including a game-changing set at the Isle of Wight Festival where they opened the second stage. Add in further knock-out performances at The Great Escape, Truck, Y Not, and NBHD festivals, and it’s no wonder they’re being hailed as one of the UK’s hottest new live acts. After the success of previous EP Favourite Record, Dirty Blonde’s return with ‘Northern Twang’ reaffirms their status in Manchester’s alt-rock scene. Described as “Your dad’s new favourite band”, this single is just the start of their journey with a bigger body of work to be announced before the end of the year.
