Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Julesy may be one of Strong Place Music’s newest signings, but the young alt-pop artist’s musical roots extend out across discipline, and far back to her earliest breaths.

“Music was always second nature, a way to communicate that felt absolutely true to me,” the daughter of a film composer father and a music director mother (who taught Julesy and countless others how to sing) fondly recalls. Julesy’s ear for songcraft flourished into a multi-faceted talent, honing the intonation of her vowels and rhythm of her pauses. But style alone does not an artist make, and her left-of-center earworms, whether mournful or euphoric, radiate out from a substantive core. As she re-records her debut EP, first recorded alone at home, Julesy establishes herself as a musician who can channel her most personal scrapes into anthemic songs that act as slices of youthful uncertainty; exciting, devastating, and hooky in equal measure.

“‘Mouthing Words’ was actually a song that I had begun writing about a year before the original EP was created. I’d been going through a difficult period in my relationship at the time, and things felt very cyclical—like there were a bunch of patterns I found myself falling into—and it seemed like a self-sabotaging loop. In hindsight, the song is also about trying to fit a relationship into your life that doesn’t quite work anymore. When I was producing this song I was listening to Caroline Polacheck’s “Pang” on repeat, and loved how she mixed heavy production/electronic sounds with acoustic instruments. She was a huge influence on the original production, as well as for this newest version of the song. More recently, I’ve been diving back into Alex G’s discography, particularly his earlier albums, and was really inspired to add more acoustic guitars to the updated track.”
