1. Smoking OK Koala 3:28

Despite the images of cuddly marsupials that the name conjures, OK Koala’s music is anything but lighthearted. The Nashville-based pop-punk outfit pairs upbeat, driving instrumentation with moody, introspective lyrical content, creating a warmly cathartic sound that feels fresh yet familiar.

OK Koala was originally formed in Boone, North Carolina, by Logan Flanagan while they studied music production at Appalachian State. They enlisted a few classmates to help them record OK Koala’s debut EP, Coping Mechanisms – EP, which was released in September 2018. After graduating, they relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, and released the single “Eighteen” in early 2019. When the 2020 lockdown put the world on hold, Flanagan continued working on new music, recording and mixing everything at home by themself.

A couple songs were released as singles to document the changing state of the world (“No Birthdays This Year,” “Crocodile Tears,” and the Bandcamp-exclusive Rough Edges EP), while the rest were refined over time into their ideal form. That final product draws from pop-punk, emo, grunge, folk-punk, garage rock, singer-songwriter, and even lo-fi hip-hop for a look at four years’ worth of mind noises brought to life. Now, with a full band lineup and a debut album set to release on January 5, 2023, OK Koala are finally delivering the powerful exhale of breath that they have held for years. Get ready – they are going to give you All Of It, All At Once.
