First Listen: Sonic Hearts Foundation Gives Us a Peek at the ‘Afterlife’

Sonic Hearts Foundation have something of a reputation for refusing to toe the line; a reputation reinforced by an impromptu guerrilla gig in 2012 which attracted two thousand people and resulted in the arrival of an incensed fleet of Glasgow’s police riot vans. Not even a hefty fine from the procurator fiscal could deter this band from following a musical quest that has marked them out as mavericks on Glasgow’s vibrant music scene.

2013 saw Sonic Hearts Foundation release their debut EP ‘Into Forever’. The four tracks, recorded in their home studio, showcase the band’s unique and unapologetic sound, containing elements of ambient noise, alt rock, eerie synth lines and even Krautrock. The lyrical content, centering around four central themes of Time, Nature, Death and War gives an insight into the scale of the band’s worldview, one that belies their youth.

‘Afterlife’ is set to win the band yet more attention as they assault the senses with their music, attitude and unrelenting drive.

Building on their 2013 critical acclaim that included several Top Albums of 2013 lists and features on Alternative Press and AbsolutePunk, Backslashes And Bad Ideas have inked a deal with Imminence Records. Vocalist Nick DePalo had this to say on the signing, “We are very excited about the switch to Imminence Records (from Harbor Records), and to be featured in a lineup of other bands we have come to love and respect. It gives us the opportunity as a band to grow and take the next step forward.” The band is set to release their first full length sometime in 2015 as the follow up to last year’s There Is No Place Like Home, which spawned the single “Defend Josh’s Life Choices” featuring Fred Mascherino (Taking Back Sunday, The Color Fred, Terrible Things).

    About Backslashes And Bad Ideas:
Backslashes and Bad Ideas is not just another generic pop punk or emo outfit. They are not typical, tired, or processed, and they proudly separate themselves from the constant cookie-cutter standard. Their circuit began with just four friends humbly making music. They started writing together inspired by a range of artists like scene veterans such as Taking Back Sunday and Brand New. The band’s unique sound and blend of pop punk, emo, and post-hardcore has drawn comparisons to The Dangerous Summer, The Wonder Years, The Story So Far, and Into It. Over It. Over two years in the making, they have grown together not only in number, but in sound and purpose. They strive to wrought passionate, driving, and heartfelt music that can transcend all listeners.

In June 2012, the band began recording theur debut EP Nothing Left To Give with producer Joe Della’quila (Anthony Green, Good Old War) at Exeter Studios in NJ. After a successful self-release on August 4th, 2012, Backslashes And Bad Ideas received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback and support, as well as favorable reviews from a variety of outlets. After several months of constant performing and promotion to support the release, the band signed to Harbor Records and went right back into the writing process to prepare for their next release. The sophomore effort There’s No Place Like Home was recorded over the summer of 2013 and features the singles “No Matter What Happens, Don’t Ask Who” as well as “Defend Josh’s Life Choices” featuring Fred Mascherino, formerly of Taking Back Sunday. The album was released on November 12, 2013, garnering high praise after exclusive features with Alternative Press and AbsolutePunk.net.

The band hit the road in January 2014, on tour to support the record with Lila Ignite and Night Owls. Since 2012 the band has traversed the east coast, playing shows near and far having shared the stage with national touring bands such as Major League, I Call Fives, Seaway, With The Punches, Half Hearted Hero, Born Without Bones, Young Statues, and Still Rings True. Backslashes And Bad Ideas thrive to deliver an electric, intimate, and tightly crafted performance no matter what the bill, venue, or crowd.

The Sunday Reeds – Rock n Roll Fantasy to be Released August 1st

Following all the hugely positive reviews and widespread airplay for the first track from their upcoming EP ‘Amour Tragique’, we’re really excited to be able to bring The Sunday Reeds’ ‘Rock n Roll Fantasy’ to your attention.

Personally this is one of my favourite tracks on the EP and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, I’m still at the stage where I’m playing it several times a day!

Taken from their new EP ‘Amour Tragique’ on Heartgun Records

    Release Date:1st August 2014
    Format:Digital Download

“The highlight of the five track EP has to be ‘Rock n Roll Fantasy’. If it wasn’t for the female voice, it could easily pass as one of the Ramones classics.” Pulserift

“The Sunday Reeds obviously have an innate understanding of the spontaneous and combustible nature of rock n roll as they produce music which exudes an effortless uncontrived cool and a dangerous seductive swagger.” Von Pip Musical Express

The Sunday Reeds, named after Melbourne’s celebrated patron of the arts Sunday Reed, are Romana Ashton and Drew Jones. Though forming in 2009 as a duo, they soon started playing live as a three-piece and are regularly joined on stage by drummer Jeremy Russell.

Their first release ‘Drowning in History’ (2009) caught the attention of UK indie label Squirrel Records leading to extensive touring across Australia, the UK and Europe, during which bridges were burned, relationships ended and nervous breakdowns became commonplace. At one point the founding duo spent three days in Paris where the most romantic city in the world became an ironic backdrop for a particularly bitter relationship break up, one that culminated in their latest EP ‘Amour Tragique’ (Tragic Love).

A collection of five songs that detail doomed romances and love lost, ‘Amour Tragique’ combines the grittiness and angst of ‘90s grunge with the pop sensibilities of ‘60s pop, rock ‘n’ roll, a good measure of old fashioned blues and ‘80s new wave/post punk.

With contralto female vocals likened to Marianne Faithfull and Shirley Manson, and a rock ‘n’ roll swagger reminiscent of The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and Nirvana, The Sunday Reeds skillfully combine the most exciting elements of rock ‘n’ roll to create lyrically rich, infectiously melodic songs with a sound distinctly their own.

Videos for the singles taken from the EP ‘Jean-Luc’ (a song about the tumultuous relationship between Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina) and ‘Something About You’ (a dark pop song about love and loss) will be released later in 2014.

Daily Dose: Armonight – Ethereal Vision

    armonight

After a good beginning of 2013 and the publication of the second official videoclip from Tales from the Heart, “Dancing with Ghosts”, the band keeps on organizing live gigs, tours and starts working on the third album.

In July 2013 the recordings of the new album start. This third album “RECOVER” is a real shift in the band’s style: the get more and more towards an energetic and lively rock, where the melancholic Keys of the previous albums make room for the guitars.

“Recover” release on 17th December 2013 for “Klasse1 Edizioni” happens immediately to be a huge step for the Italian band: a European tour is going to be organized, and the band can’t wait to be on the road to play again, while the brand new video of “Night of illusions” gets published and the ideas for the fourth album start to sound clear.

So be ready: because Armonight and their Music will surely never, ever stop!

The Oversight Releases “Far From Gone”

Boston alternative rock/pop punk outfit The Oversight has released Far From Gone, today, July 22nd. The EP features five tracks that features instantly stuck in your head melodies, close to home lyrics, and intricate arrangements to provide listeners with the perfect summer release. Drummer Josh Parra had this to say on the band’s debut EP, “All five songs are about Ryan Watanabe’s (vocals/guitar) life and all the struggles he went through throughout his entire life including breakups, being broken hearted, and being sleepless. The album opener, “Collective,” and “Far From Gone” are the songs that bring all of us together to not only help him but one another as a big family.”

    FAR FROM GONE

    oversightcover

    About The Oversight:
Hailing from Boston, the up-and-coming alternative rock/pop punk outfit The Oversight is set to become the new breakthrough artist with a sound that falls somewhere in between the instinctive approach of artists such as The Gaslight Anthem and the clever arrangements and melodies of Pierce The Veil. The band is a brainchild of a group of students at Berklee College of Music, one of the most influential music schools in the world. It is a project born out of a common desire to grow as artists and as human beings, while also making the music they love and sharing their passion with whoever is willing to listen. With the band members being so far away from their home and families, they turned to each other for support when it was needed the most. This transformed the group from a simple band to a self-created family, which would in turn become the main theme of the band’s debut EP Far From Gone.

    Daily Dose: J Noble – I’m Original

    noble 0002

From his humble beginnings, Toronto native Jermaine Dunkley, professionally known as J Noble, emerged onto the music scene against all odds. Raised in Rexdale’s Kipling and Mount Olive community, J Noble’s talent began with basketball. Making the first ever All-Canadian All-star Team, he earned a full 4-year scholarship to the University of Nebraska.
However, coming from a community where the streets provide a quick and easy means of making money, J Noble found himself caught up in the fast and dangerous lifestyle, with which athletics were unfortunately not compatible.

Unbeknownst to him, this very lifestyle would lay the foundation from which his passion for music would eventually flourish. Having lost countless friends and relatives to the streets that once consumed him, J Noble knew that if he continued going down the path he was on, he too would eventually fall victim to the streets.

At a critical point, he realized that it was time for the trajectory of his life to change. Needing inspiration for material, J Noble knew that the best source would come from his own life experiences, which continue to fuel his artistic expression. His raw emotion, inexhaustible drive and harsh disappointments have all contributed to his lyrical content and prowess, catapulting him to heights. In a short span, J Noble has created a massive buzz across the G.T.A. which has been evident in his popularity on the net and the success of various mix tapes. With 3 heavy hitting videos, and plans of unleashing an upcoming mix tape entitled Real Life Drama, J Noble has established himself as a force to be reckoned with.

As CEO of Monstarz World INC, he feels that “any person that has been through what I been through or has seen what I’ve seen, usually isn’t around long enough to speak about it. I consider them Monstarz.”

Bree Shows Her V On Tour

In a world where much of rock has lost its passion in a soulless sterility of studio smoke and mirrors comes bree – a 24-year-old Christian cult castaway from Harrisburg, Oregon who discovered the truth the first time she plugged into a Gibson Flying V and cranked up a vintage Marshall amp.

With influences ranging from Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and Wanda Jackson to The Beatles, The Who, The Clash and The Ramones, BREE has created her own slice of the rock n roll pie.

Nearly Dead & Totally Touring – The Nearly Deads on the Road

Daily Dose: The Hertz Complex – Bassy

    The Hertz Complex

“I can hear the rock but where’s the roll gone?”

Nestled away in a dark corner of southeast London, The Hertz Complex asked themselves this very question. And then they set about answering it, combining lo-fi fuzzed-up guitar riffs and hypnotic melodies to create shimmering post punk masterpieces.

Neil O’Keeffe (lead vocals, guitar) and Paul Keane (guitar) have a songwriting partnership that transgresses borders. Hailing originally from Cork, Ireland, they have set up camp in the emerging artists’ haven that is Deptford, London. Here they draw on a mix of influences from their Irish roots to bands such as The Chameleons, Joy Division, Whipping Boy and Howling Wolf, resulting in their own eclectic version of post punk. Joining Neil and Paul are Benjamin Balan (drums) and Chris Keelan (bass).

Originally from Canada, they form a solid, driving rhythm section that provides the foundation to The Hertz Complex’s dynamic interlacing guitar work.

The four-piece aim to bring a forgotten passion back into music and this musical salvation has certainly been delivered – an ever-growing army of fans, festival appearances and a headline slot at LA’s legendary Whisky A Go Go are testament to that fact. The Hertz Complex’s highly anticipated debut EP comes on the back of news that one of their songs will be featured in a movie soundtrack, another sure sign that this band are making music that is essential listening.

Video: A Modern Way to Die – She Walks

First single from “Pulse” by A Modern Way to Die from Catania, Italy.

Daily Dose: New Nobility – Paradise

    newnobility

New Nobility is taking the independent music scene by storm. Already an internationally recognized band, this Sydney-based trio not only woos and pierces the ears of rock lovers with their melodious shredding and vocals (as heard here in Galactic), but also uses their music as a platform to promote justice and world peace. If the idea of peaceful Hard Rock is making you a bit queasy, don’t worry. This isn’t some Rage Against the Machine/We Are the World crossover. New Nobility administers the right dose of poisonous rock to balance out the peace and activism, which has won them quite a global following. With awards, accolades and this international attention, the only indie question for these Aussie rockers is how much longer ‘til they’re signed?

If you’re a New Nobility virgin, Galactic is the perfect place to get on board. There’s no time wasted getting into this space-love groove, with an urgency of shredding roping in every electric guitar player/lover from Dallas to Delhi. And just as you were praising the resuscitation of the screaming electric guitar, New Nobility’s vocals kick in and coat your eardrums with an even sweeter taste of 70’s Rock. But Rock… that’s a very slippery term to use when describing New Nobility.

The Beatles were considered ‘rock’ and so was Led Zeppelin. Metal? Well then we’d be getting into Iron Maiden. I can’t exactly pinpoint what New Nobility should be categorized into, so I won’t do it at all. Their ‘Galactic’ track brings up warm memories of Living Colour, Steve Vai and Dream Theatre all at once. A combination of terrifying guitar licks and dangerous vocals, guided by riffs, rolls and keys – all oozing out beautifully in stadium-sized proportions. If there’s one thing missing with Galactic, it’s the roar of 30,000 people at the end of the song. These guys are built to perform, and the only thing that would improve this astronomical experience, would be hearing it birthed on stage from its three creators.

New NobilityThere’s no mistaking the potential in this band, and Galactic only proves New Nobility’s worthiness on the world’s musical stage. A well-selected gem for WeeklyPodcast, Galactic is another audible orgasm and warm ray of sunshine for the infinitude of independent music junkies, like myself, to bask in.

Daily Dose: The Fallen State – Hope & Revival

    thefallenstate

‘Style and substance with a passion for performance’. If nothing else these words roar out what The Fallen State is all about.

The Fallen State was raised in the Autumn of 2013… when five young men with a mutual love for powerful, anthemic and beautifully executed rock, found themselves in a room together. For these guys togetherness isn’t just a dream but a reality… they have that extra, indescribable ‘musical magic’ tattooed across their songs… the artistic ink of five individuals harmonised into something greater than the parts.

Individually, they’ve graced stages with the likes of Alter Bridge, Heaven’s Basement and Clutch… they live for the live show, with their stylish take on the musical legacy of both sides of the Atlantic.

Musically, The Fallen State combine the exuberant, smooth and soulful voice of frontman Ben Stenning with a harmonic wall of warm, contemporary rock guitars. Add the artfully emotive phrasing of lead six-stringer Jon Price – not to mention a grooving, ruthless rhythm section – and there can only be one outcome… infectious, body-rocking songs that’ll leave crowds hungry for more.

In only a few short months, they have developed a stunning reputation for selling out shows with their modern, incisive and inspiring performances. Ally this to the release of their forthcoming EP – ‘Edge of Reason’- and 2014 is shaping up to be a ground-breaking year.

Wherever you are right now, The Fallen State is rising… and in 2014 we’ll be delivering our hi-octane, groove-ridden, rock n’ roll triumph to a venue near you. We will see you on the road!

    “Lights” lyrics

Excuse me light of day, can I borrow you tonight
I’m gonna go to a place where the cold holds right
As I walk through the rain, I see an old old house
It says won’t you come in and oh yeah bring the light…and I say
    Oh I guess I can
    Oh I guess I CAN
Oh I guess I can spare the light
As I step through the door, all I see is confused eyes
And then a person says to me, what’s it like to know light
I said it’s hard to explain, it’s like being born for the second time
It’s kinda like being placed in a world where there’s no wrong
    And they said
    Do you think you can
    Do you think you CAN
Do you think you can spare some light
As we all start to sway, twist and mend in the light
I can see every face their all like….like mine
As the night turns to day and the hurt turns to joy
We all walk to a place where the light holds right
    And we say
    Oh yes we can
    Oh yes we CAN
Oh yes we can share the light

I wrote this song about 5 years ago as homage to Joss Stone.

It’s developed a lot since. All the words, music and instruments on the song are by me.

Shot and Directed by Jillian Sander.

Raymond Holzknecht of Echo Beach Studios helped in mixing.

Michael Fuller who mastered “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” by Rod Stewart put on the finishing touches.
