Gallery 47 has just released their new single titled ‘I Wish I was’ as a precursor to their upcoming album ‘East Street’. Taking a more stripped-down and less acoustic approach to this album, Gallery 47 retain that sound they have become known for with a bit more grit added for flavor and layered vocals for measure, Gallery 47 gives a different take on what they are known for.
Be forewarned, there is no bass guitar on this track. There is on the album, via one song. But this absolutely fits into what they are trying to accomplish. That stark and gritty beauty lets the guitar and vocals shine through in a kind of alt-folk/rock kind of way without becoming overpowering, which is not necessary with this song.
About the ‘East Street’ Album
‘East Street’ is the 9th album by Nottingham songwriter Jack Peachey, known since 2010 by the pseudonym Gallery 47. The album was recorded at Jack’s family home over the Christmas period in 2019/2020. The bare bones of all songs were recorded on a Gibson Les Paul Studio through a Vox AC 15 amp on the same day. Most takes were recorded with an AKG C414 condenser microphone, and many songs feature upwards of ten vocal takes double-tracked in unison or harmony. There is no bass guitar on the album except for the final song, ‘Calm’. One song, ‘Dulcimer #2’ is instrumental and dates back to 2013. Despite the seemingly melancholic subject matter – many songs touch affectionately on paranoia, disease, addiction, and death – the album was written and recorded in a positive state of mind, optimistic for the future.

They have recently been joined for practices and live shows by Ben Hellings on Bass, also of Long Dead Signal. The three have become good friends, feeding off each other’s moments of cynicism and enthusiasm. They meet on Sundays and are already planning the next album ‘Bye & Bye’. East Street finds Jack in the last year of a publishing deal with BMG, Berlin. He has tried to make ends meet in various day-jobs and is pleasantly nihilistic about his prospects in life.
Critics in the past have drawn comparisons to everyone from Paul Simon, Nick Drake, James Taylor & Bert Jansch to Fionn Reagan, Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley. Jack has said that he sees himself the most in Elliott Smith. He enjoys the music of Eels, Radiohead, The Beatles, Cream, Black Sabbath, Norah Jones, Simon & Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Secret Machines, Interpol, Smashing Pumpkins, Pavement, Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Velvet Underground, Metallica, Slipknot, Korn, Marilyn Manson, John Martyn, Natalie Duncan, Billy Holiday, Maybeshewill & Paul Weller. Gary (Drums) and Ben (Bass) have an incredible awareness of music and the three of them often sit and listen to music together.
