Known for their eclectic mix of intensity, colour and catchiness, much-loved Australian (Naarm/Melbourne) outfit Fan Girl, triumphantly return today with a boisterous, kinetic and incredibly catchy new single (and video), ‘falling’. Featuring vocals from Elizabeth M. Drummond, ‘falling’ is the group’s first single of 2023, to be followed by another single in October, and a string of singles and an EP in the new year, alongside a busy touring schedule in Australia & UK/Europe.

‘falling’ will be released via Mandatory Music worldwide, a subsidiary of Believe.

“Lyrically, ‘falling’ is about how the honeymoon period in a relationship is just the beginning. While it can be an electric and pleasurably nauseating period, it’s not the best bit, and it’s often not the real bit.

We tracked ‘falling’ at our studio (Taste Police HQ) in Brunswick, Melbourne, feverishly trying to keep the eclectic balance between colour, manic collage, and directness. The amazing Elizabeth M Drummond was kind enough to lend us some vocals, in what became more of a demonic angel choir part. Aaron Cupples dealt with the sonic mess and brought it to life with a hot steamy mix. When we were writing and recording ‘falling’, we wanted the verses to be really fun & bouncy, the chorus to be big & crisp like a bullshit FIFA song, and outro to be anthemic but tight.”

To accompany the release, is a video directed by the band, and shot by Richard Clifford (aka @rcstills) on horror-style handycam. Shot across various locations in Melbourne, Victoria, it features Fan Girl interacting with an unexplained monster, chasing it Scooby Doo-style throughout the city and out into the Redwood forest, where the tables turn and the fun begins. No spoilers here.

Hallmarked by their urgent and explosive live shows, Fan Girl are celebrating the release of their new single with a string of Melbourne shows and support slots. The band will embark on an Australian East Coast tour in October/November in support of the following single, and will be touring nationally & internationally in 2024 in support of upcoming singles and an EP.

With their most recent single ‘react (react)’, Fan Girl have gained notable radio support both nationally & internationally via KEXP (World Premiere & Song Of The Day + Multiple Spins), BBC Radio 1, Radio X, Triple J, FBi Radio, Triple R, Edge Radio & SYN, as well as major DSP playlist adds including Spotify’s New Music Friday, Alt Here, All New Rock (INT), Local Noise & Fresh Finds. The band have also seen press support from DIY MAG, Rolling Stone, ALTANGLES, Pilerats, ToneDeaf, Clash & Mystic Sons. Recently, the band played a sold out single launch in Melbourne, have toured the east coast of Australia, and supported the likes of Catfish & The Bottlemen, Ecca Vandal, Angie McMahon, The Vines & more.

Tragically, as they were celebrating the release of their debut album, Elephant Room in 2018, founding member Jack Wood passed away, and understandably, the band went into an indefinite hiatus, taking some well needed time to regroup. They’re picking up the pieces and have well and truly returned. Their urgent, explosive live shows are back, coupled with exhilarating new music, and a newfound appreciation for each other, life, & obnoxious guitar music.

‘falling’ was recorded at Taste Police HQ, the band’s studio in Brunswick, Victoria.
