With news of a sequel to classic 80’s kids film The Goonies on the horizon, South Yorkshire stoner trio STEEL TREES are about to awaken a whole host of memories for fans of the original as they announce the release of a free download cover version of Cyndi Lauper’s hit ‘Goonies R Good Enough’ featuring Charlie B from Bristol trio Nasty Little Lonely on vocals.

For a band of weed-smoking metalheads who seem almost recklessly unafraid of mincing their words and ruffling a few feathers in the name of rock and roll, a Cyndi Lauper track from a cult kids film might not have been the most obvious choice for a cover (actually, thinking about, maybe it was…), but as soon as the opening cry of “I’m scared man!” opens up and a wall of fuzz-drenched guitars drop behind Charlie B’s sultry, screeched vocal, it all falls into place. On their choice of cover, front man Tom Hannon explains:
“The Goonies changed ours and tons of others 90’s kid’s lives so it only seemed logical to blast out our own take on a piece of film history…also we collectively look a bit like Sloth. Having our friend Charlie sing on the track was a pleasure, after a gig together in Swindon with Nasty Little Lonely we stayed in touch and when we put out a call for a female vocalist to record Cyndi Lauper’s part on The Goonies R Good Enough, Charlie was very happy to oblige.”

The boys will also appear at Tramlines Festival in Sheffield on 25th July at The University Arms as part of their self-curated line-up that includes God Damn, Heck, Dead Harts, Kagoule, Mothers, Elevant, Autopsy Boys, Weirds, Fickle Twin, Unicorn Hunters and Luna Maria.
Commenting on what drives the band, Hannon says; “We’re all from ex-pit villages in the Dearne Valley area of Rotherham, South Yorkshire. It’s had an impact on our music, but in a good way – because we want to get the f*ck out of here! We’re the misfits, the scruffs, the socially awkward people that you avoid for not being hip enough. Right now we’re working on new material that is light years away from our previous stuff and recently parted ways with our old bassist and brought in new dude Lee Curran aka ‘Shades’. Everything just got taken up 1.21 gigawatts. We hope everyone sticks around for a couple of months to hear our new songs which are f*cking huge, if we do say so ourselves. They’ll also be recorded by a super sh*t-hot producer who will remain nameless for now.”
Aside from winning them support slots with Dinosaur Jr, Turbowolf, Dinosaur Pile Up, Jim Jones Revue, Amazing Snakeheads, Holy Mountain, Baby Godzilla and Qemists, they’ve also appeared on the BBC Introducing stage T in The Park and their delightfully name track ‘Ready Steady F*ck’ appears on the soundtrack for the Troma-backed horror film Banjo which has had two sold out screenings at Cannes film fest and is having its world premiere at Film 4’s Frightfest in Leicester square.
Their chunky, driving riffs have seen previous singles pick up support from at radio Team Rock, Total Rock, Artrocker Radio, Amazing Radio, BBC Introducing and Tom Robinson on BBC6 Music, plus coverage from Classic Rock Magazine, Thrash Hits, Gigwise and a host of blogs.
