This interview was a real privilege for me. And not because Meli’sa Morgan is a living legend in the music industry (yes Meli’sa, I know you don’t think so but you are!), but because she very much deserves the title and has kept herself firmly rooted to the ground. That takes a special person in any profession to keep one’s modesty and humbleness but Meli’sa Morgan acheives that along with a monstrous career with the determination that only a true lady and truly decent human being can achieve.
Meli’sa is set to play a U.K. tour this fall called “The Great Voices of Soul” with other such legends such as Patti LaBelle, Soul II Soul and more which is sure to add to the evolution of her career. Check out the interview above for details on that as well as the multi-faceted women of music and business that is Meli’sa Morgan.
About “The Great Voices of Soul”:
Featuring some of the greatest soul music and vocals ever written, this exciting November night will fill Wembley with soul thanks to the spectacular, star studded ‘Voices of Soul’ event. Headed by the legendary likes of Patti LaBelle, The Whispers and Soul II Soul, the line-up of award winning stars are preparing for this once in a lifetime opportunity to bring the house down at the SSE Arena, Wembley.
Supported by Smooth Radio and presented by TBH events, the show will be a must-see for fans of true soul music, and for live music fans who want to see how these innovative artists shaped the pop music landscape as we see it today.
At the very top of the bill will be multi-Grammy award winner Patti LaBelle, christened the ‘Godmother of Soul’ thanks to a five decade career that has seen 50 million albums sold. After her 16 years as the lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, LaBelle made the decision to go solo and had several number one hits including ‘If Only You Knew’ and ‘On My Own’, a duet with Michael McDonald. Tremendous critical success followed from Grammy Award winning albums, making her one of the icons of soul music the world over.
Also headlining are LA four piece The Whispers, whose list of 33 top ten hits and twenty Billboard charting albums stretch back to the birth of soul in the 60s. One of the most influential groups of their generation, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003, and accepted by popular vote into the Soul Music Hall of Fame in 2012. Their ground breaking rise in the 60s has also been recognised by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, who handed the group their prestigious Pioneer Award in 2008.
Meanwhile, from our very own shores, Soul II Soul first found fame in 1989 with huge UK number one ‘Back To Life (However Do You Want Me’)’, a track which also reached the top 5 in the USA and endures to this day. The band went on to win two Grammy awards, and have twice been nominated for ‘Best British Group’ at the BRIT awards, with five nominations in total.
The list of incredible talent on hand for the ‘Voices of Soul’ goes on, including:
The S.O.S. Band (Sounds of Success) – Whose debut album ‘SOS’ immediately went Gold and spawned several hit singles.
Loose Ends – The first ever UK band to top the US Billboard R&B chart with massive single ‘Hanging on a String (Contemplating)’ in 1985
Gwen Dickey – Lead vocalist of Rose Royce whose iconic hits ‘Car Wash’ and ‘Wishing on a Star’ are true classics of pop/soul music, Gwen has also worked with Mealoaf, James Brown, and most recently Jay-Z.
Meli’sa Morgan – US R&B chart topping vocalist who cut her teeth singing with Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan
Almost too good to be true, this line-up is one that celebrates the beauty of soul music through the decades, and will make for an unbelievable night of entertainment and spectacle – all taking place at the ‘SSE Arena, Wembley, November 15th.
