“I’m Smarter Than All of You and I Understand Nothing” by Embering

With the release of “I’m Smarter Than All of You and I Understand Nothing”, Embering bring a new feel to a combination of genres. Lush with addicting progressions, a mix of digital and natural instrumentation, and a sonic wall of sound, the record boasts the aesthetic of indie rock anthems. Though the songs are diverse from one another, there is a glue that holds them all together much like a concept album. Most importantly, the record never loses sight of the emotional platform great songs are built from.

The first single, “Screw It, I’m Getting Braces” is an upswing indie pop classic. Complete with a catchy chorus and warm synth hooks, the song seems to build and breathe as it plays on.

“The song is the most catchy and sing-able. Some of the other songs may have my favorite drum fill or lyric, but time and time again, this melody gets stuck in my head. And it’s one of the most requested at shows. ‘Screw It, I’m Getting Braces’ is the most “poppy” song on the record and the only one lead by acoustic guitar. I think, if anything, it reflects one end of the record’s diversity “, explains songwriter Bryson Schmidt of the bands single.

Although the single does speak volumes for the EP, to get a real understanding of where Embering are coming from, it should be heard in its entirety.

“This album was a huge experimental step. I had become very polished with my previous “Ben Folds Five meets Blink 182″ sound and I wanted to force myself out of that box. I ditched the piano (for now), incorporated my love for 8-bit game soundtracks, and wrote all the music and lyrics separately to ensure that I didn’t default to my melodic tendencies”, says Schmidt of the album and evolution in songwriting.

Becoming involved with writing and performing music as early as high school, Bryson Schmidt, at the age of only 16, wrote songs for a project called Soup Of The Day and at times would even commission friends to come and perform live with him. It wasn’t until the songwriter started attending a college that his songwriting evolved to a more thoughtful style. It was then that Embering became the new project. Once the first LP Negative Reinforcement was released, he met other players that heard the songs and were willing to learn them to play live. For live shows, Embering is now a four piece.

As a full band, Embering has already played a number of shows to packed venues and Schmidt is always working on new material for upcoming releases.

I’m Smarter Than All of You and I Understand Nothing is now available for streaming and downloads on most major digital outlets and the band is now focused on lining up more shows in support of the release.
