sunsetto has today released his new video for the track titled ‘drugs are for fun’. Guised as a summer pop opus built for summer, the lyrics run deep with documentation of that moment of epiphany of what is, what could have been, and what should be.

Beautifully crafted by sunsetto (a.k.a. Kyle Mischiek) gives us that sobering realization of a metaphoric crossroads. These lyrics aren’t just poetic, they’re moving and inspiring. The music encapsulates and frames them for all to head and behold. This is more than a song for summer, this is a song for every time after too.

The lyrics are below to follow along and follow ahead.

I wrote the song in LA last November about coping mechanisms that formed from seemingly harmless fun with partying but that led to some important conversations and changes in my life. The song is disguised as an upbeat catchy pop anthem but, at its core, is a sobering conversation between two people. Nobody is perfect, and we’re not all lucky enough to have someone in our life that cares enough to tell us we need to make a change.

Lyrics

Let’s not pretend that the club is a place
You get drunk with your friends, yeah

And let’s not pretend that the drugs are for fun
And you don’t need them, yeah

(Yeah, yeah)
There’s a light in your eyes
And it’s good at giving you away
(Yeah)
When we’re high we can’t lie
It’s written on our face

Are you waiting on somebody
To pick you up at this party?
Is that why you keep staring
At your phone?

Did you notice your nose is bleeding
Don’t worry I know the feeling
Not sleeping always beats sleeping alone
(Can’t sleep alone)

(Yeah, yeah)
There’s a light in your eyes
And it’s good at giving you away
(Yeah)
When we’re high we can’t lie
It’s written on our face

Let’s not pretend that the club is a place
You get drunk with your friends, yeah

And let’s not pretend that the drugs are for fun
And you don’t need them, yeah

And let’s call it even
‘Cause we both got somebody else and
It isn’t a secret
But let’s not pretend that the drugs are for fun
And we don’t need them

I need it (I need it)
you need it (You need it)

I need it (I need it)
you need it (You need it)

I need it (I need it)
you need it (You need it)

I need it (I need it)

We need it

(Yeah, yeah)
There’s a light in your eyes
And it’s good at giving you away
(Yeah)
When we’re high we can’t lie
It’s written on our face

Let’s not pretend that the club is a place
You get drunk with your friends, yeah

And let’s not pretend that the drugs are for fun
And we don’t need them

Let’s not pretend that the club is a place

About sunsetto

sunsetto (aka Kyle Mischiek) is a Toronto-based singer, songwriter and producer. Skating past genre lines and assembling a nocturnal mosaic of R&B, alternative and pop, his evocative vocals dip in and out of hazy loops, stoned D.I.Y. beats, and flourishes of cinematic production beamed out of his personal studio yet meant for mass transmission.

During 2020, he shared a snippet of his single, “don’t leave,” on Instagram and organically amassed hundreds of thousands of streams. He followed up the initial viral buzz with two more singles, “good connection” and “downtown,” and is continuing to roll out a series of new tracks as he heads towards his forthcoming debut EP.
