First Listen: Hunter Blue - So GayIntroducing Hunter – destined to become the most celebrated flag-bearer for gay rights in recent history. Of Indian heritage and born in Tanzania, Hunter is a whirlwind of artistic creativity – he is Hunter the Activist; Hunter the Fashion Guru; Hunter the Musician; Hunter the Creator. With the release of “So Gay”, Hunter presents a portrayal of himself as not only a champion of gay rights but the leader of an LGBTQ revolution, in which people of all genders can stand up and proudly declare their sexuality, without fear of persecution or discrimination.

Hunter was born in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Eastern Africa, an area in which it is illegal to be homosexual. Raised as a Muslim with Indian parents, he overcame many obstacles to pursue his dream of becoming an artist and completed his education in London, where he received a BA Hons in fashion and textiles. He remained in the city to teach another of his passions – dance – becoming both tutor and choreographer within the Asian dance industry, fusing Western styles with bhangra and Bollywood.

“So Gay” was recorded in London by the celebrated producer Niraj Chag, known for his skill in combining the sounds of different cultures, and sees the protagonist of the song fiercely declaring his sexuality in the face of a homophobic man. Although clearly primarily a gay anthem, based as it is on Hunter’s own experiences, it is a song which encourages people of every background to be proud of who they are and what they stand for, regardless of criticism. “So Gay” centers around an electro-blues riff and Hunter’s convincingly Southern American growl, building into a catchy, humorous track which still manages to carry an important message.

Accompanying the track is a hard-hitting lyric video which shows the repressed as an army in their own right. “So Gay” comes with two club remixes and with merchandise to support the campaign also on the horizon. It is a song which will doubtless polarise opinion but, most importantly, one which will get people talking about what it means to be gay, straight, bi, trans, gender-fluid, in the 21st Century. Hunt or be hunted!
