Larry Gee has today dropped his new single titled ‘Don’t Need U’. Soft and sensual with an easy vibe and ever expanding sound, ‘Don’t Need U’ has that instant anthemic feeling with enough thump to test the subwoofer while keeping that melodic high just within range to enhance the hook.
The solid mix of varied instrumentation is what shines out to me as a musician with genre-hopping senses taking flight in the headspace without overlapping. That is the mark of a skilled songwriter. We need a track like ‘Don’t Need U’ now.
About Larry Gee
After performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and sharing the stage with the likes of Erykah Badu, Leon Bridges, and Alabama Shakes, soulful pop singer Larry Gee took a hiatus from music. Returning from a period of personal hardship, Gee makes his way back front and center with his new single, “Borrowed Time”.
This single fuses the artist’s penchant for pop with a synth-heavy beat, and hard-charging lyrical sweep showcasing Gee’s considerable vocal range. “Borrowed Time” is a quarantine summer anthem, proving to us all that Larry Gee is not only back, but is here to stay.
For Gee, the past year has been fraught with challenges that forced him to reevaluate his life and his art. Thanks to friends, family, and a great therapist, Gee found a way back to creating songs that he believes will uplift fans old and new.
“I had fallen out of love with this thing that was so close to my identity,” he recalls. “But then it was music that became the vehicle to finding my way back to myself again.”
Once Gee decided to write songs again, the artist united with the production team of Pure Life Entertainment, which includes former Forever the Sickest Kids members, Caleb Turman, Austin Bello, and musician/producer/songwriter Grant Thompson. The team has written and produced for artists like 4 Door Theatre, We Are Empty, Paul Pfau, and many more. The singer-songwriter, previously known for blending soul, funk, and pop, knew that his next work had to be his most personal yet.
“It needed to be soul-bearing,” Gee says. “It needed to be me, and this was the perfect team to help realize the honesty of what I had been walking through.”
This single fuses the artist’s penchant for pop with acoustic guitar, a synth-heavy beat, and hard-charging lyrical sweep showcasing Gee’s considerable vocal range. “Sleeping In My Car” is a Gorillaz-meets-Adele/SamSmith power ballad sounding anthem, proving to us all that Larry Gee is not only back, but is here to stay.
