First Listen: The Inkhearts – Temper Temper

    1973708_495861360542156_4597375107635849119_o

The Inkhearts are due to release two tracks ‘Temper Temper’ and ‘Uptight’ by digital download on November 17th 2014.

The Inkhearts formed in 2010 when the members, then young teenagers, were introduced to each other at a music tuition initiative at The Engine Rooms, Skelmersdale. Originally a seven piece, it was only when three original members left that the band found their sound and started to write and gig more seriously.

With three members aged just eighteen and one aged nineteen, The Inkhearts’ music screams enthusiasm and teenage energy yet its underlined by a songwriting prowess that transcends their youth. Citing influences like The Vaccines, Two Door Cinema Club and The Libertines, the band are well versed in the art of mainstream indie pop but their intricately layered tracks have got an individualism that sets their sound apart, giving them an identity all of their own.

Their last single ‘Keeping Up’, described by Amazing Radio’s Jim Gellatly as a ‘cracking track’, was produced by The Farm’s Carl Hunter and Gary Westhead at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool. The single recieved widespread airplay across the UK, Europe and America, it was chosen as Janice Long’s BBC Radio 2 ‘Janice Loves’ track and was selected by Artrocker for inclusion in their New Blood feature.

Josh Healey: Lost & Found Again

The lead track, Sometimes, starts the EP with a very relaxing and laid back feel, the acoustic guitar very subtle in the background with the vocals carrying the song. There is a hint of folk in the song which carrys the song very well, breaking the song up between verses. Tom Robinson of BBC 6 Music has already been playing this track which is huge statement to how well written this track is to start off the EP.

A more upbeat track to follow with People Like You, a song to tap your feet to but a very strong message in the lyrics of the song about society today. The song helps the EP along after the lead track to show that Josh can write powerful upbeat music with strong underlining messages and make it work with more soft acoustic songs.

City of Saints has a beautiful finger picked intro that carries the song and shows off Josh’s talent on the acoustic guitar. A simple song of just Josh and his acoustic guitar in very stripped down and raw track. The title track Lost, Found & Lost Again closes the EP perfectly. The intro of acoustic guitar and piano which play throughout give the perfect accompaniment to Josh’s soft vocals in a very heartfelt track to close the EP.

    Naylor’s Notes: Message to Venus

The music kicks in, and immediately I start to feel it.  Then I hear, Don’t Make Me Follow the Hollow.”  It’s a Feeling I can’t Hide.  Just look at your surroundings. It seems that if one person jumps, they all jump.  This is without even looking down!  Don’t, “Follow the Hollow,” and don’t become a part of a programmed population.  However, I encourage you to follow, Message to Venus, and check out what they had to say during our interview.

When did you start your band?
I started playing in a band when I was 16, called, Tribu 8.”

    Which instruments do you play?
I play guitar, and I also sing.

Describe your music interests and abilities.
I’ve always had a thing for crisp, clean, yet heavy distortion.  Delay affects are my ear candy. I also enjoy the organic sound of wood instruments, like an acoustic guitar.

    What famous musicians inspire you?
Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Chris Cornell

What are some of your best musical memories?
I remember my first paying gig was with a band I had, while at a funeral.  It was at a beach bar gig for my dad’s surfer friend who had just passed away.  It was a big party celebration.

What public events do you have coming up
We are currently in the process of releasing our new album called, Victims & Villains.”  We are now working with booking for gigs, “TBA.”

What would you say to beginners in the industry, who are nervous?
Smoke pot, keep studying, finish college, and have a backup plan because this is not easy.  And if you’re still nervous just pretend everyone is naked, and you’re the only one with clothes on.

How do you balance your music with your family and friends?
This is not an easy task.  I have had many problems with this subject, specifically with girlfriend issues.  Some people just don’t understand how important this is for a musician.  You need to have people support you.  You can’t always be a dreamer.  Maintain a reality, but don’t give up.

Daily Dose: Azwel – Out On A Limb

    10424231_10154447831950165_7587251554054983495_n

Azwel is a project that involves songwriter Jason Perrillo. For the past 10 years, he has been recording and producing his own independently released albums in his home studio in New York. He describes the music as interesting melodic, catchy pop with songs that are influenced by various styles of music. The sound is often compared to 70’s-90s brit pop/rock artists. Known for being an extremely prolific and busy writer, Jason releases at least one album per year and sometimes more.

Azwel completed a debut album in 2003. The sound was initially more electronic but over the years, has incorporated more acoustic instruments into the mix. Azwel’s music is always filled with interesting chord progressions, catchy melodies and vocal harmonies. The arrangements vary from song to song with electric/acoustic guitars to various keyboards and strings. Most of the albums are available to download for free on the official website with the choice of optonal donations depending on how much the listener enjoys the album. Over the years, Jason has also collaborated with many other online artists and has a project in the works with Argentinian pop artist, Julian Murias.

Throughout the years Azwel’s songs have been reviewed online and have gotten very positive feedback on various blogs, radio stations(Gashouse Radio in Philly-see the ‘press’ section) , Garageband.com, Redfizz.com, The SixtyOne, Independant Artist Company and the albums have received some very positive reviews from major publications such as the New York Newsday. Azwel’s songs have also been featured in Hollywood major motion pictures(Let The Game Begin), soundtracks, and compilations put together by several international independent labels.

In 2009, an Anthology was released containing 20 free downloadable songs, available on the official website along with all of the previous albums. Azwel has currently finished an 15th album entitled, “From Now On” which expands the sound even further.

First Look: ShezAr – What I See

While What I See is only her debut single, East London’s exceptionally talented soul vocalist ShezAr has already drawn praise from major players, including the likes of SBTV and MSN through to Pride Magazine and Female First – and has seen plays from Radio 1xtra and Capital FM amongst many more.

Touring singer for Naughty Boy and noted for providing backing vocals to everyone from Natasha Bedingfield to Emeli Sandé, ShezAr was born into a hugely talented family, the men known as Labrinth and MckNasty among her siblings.

It’s early days, but one thing’s for sure: in her acclaimed, powerful voice, ShezAr has what it takes to go all the way to top.

    About ShezAr:
Hackney-born soul siren ShezAr is an exciting new force in the UK music scene. From co-writing and delivering the album ‘Sonny Boy’ with Unsigned MOBO-winner Frequently Asked Questions, to collaborating on ‘Curtain Call’ with Sony Music-signed Aiden Grimshaw, she has very quickly became a collaborator of choice for established artists and emerging stars.

With a family steeped in a deep musical tradition, it was ShezAr’s older brother and renowned UK drummer MckNasty who introduced her to the industry as a session singer. It wasn’t long before the likes of Natasha Beddingfield, Terri Walker, Bashy, Omar, MPHO and The Guillemots were seeking out the promising singer ‘with the big voice’ for backing vocal duties.

Raised on gospel music, ShezAr’s soul-music streak runs through all of the genres she dabbles in – House to Motown and Blues.

The ability to deliver powerful vocals for all occasional has been a major selling point for this adaptable artist.

As the UK prepared to receive the Olympic torch, ShezAr was invited to perform on the BBC Introducing stage at the Radio 1 Hackney Weekender and went on to take part in two national tours with chart-topping lyricist Wretch 32 (perform alongside Ed Sheeran, Delilah, Chipmunk and Angel).

ShezAr ended 2012 on a well deserved high note, with an interview on Channel 4 music-based breakfast show Freshly Squeezed “Ones To Watch – 2013” and a significant industry buzz.

Counting one of the UK’s most prolific artist/producers of the moment, Labrinth, as your younger brother, couldn’t hurt chances of further recognition. Her collaboration with the musical maestro on his recent ‘Atomic EP’ set the scene for the siblings to continue to create new exciting material in 2013.

With firm foundations laid down, ShezAr began her independent journey in earnest with the premier of her first music video ‘Forever’, featuring another uber talented sibling, the Sony ATV signed Mac1. The track receiving strong YouTube support and multiple plays on 1Xtra, Capital XTRA and RinseFM.

Hitting the road once again, ShezAr joined DJ Melody Kane’s Female Takeover Tour in spring 2013, alongside featured guests Shystie, Lady Lykez and Shejay1E. The takeover continued as she joined Terri Walker, Ms D, Shakka, Josh Osho, KOF, Jamie Joseph, Call Me Unique, Kaleem Taylor and Shea for the Soul Acoustic Regional tour.

Since then, ShezAr has been a regular guest on Naughty Boy’s Hotel Cabana-themed live show for the 2013 summer festivals, she has won-over live crowds and introduced acts such as J Spades, Sam Smith & Emeli Sande and stepped up to perform additional summer live dates with Wretch32.

With the promise of more shows in the 2014, as part of a UK tour performing alongside Jacob Banks and Shakka, it’s clear that ShezAr knows her way around the main stage.

Whether wowing the likes of Fearne Cotton & Trevor Nelson, with her rendition of ‘Lifted’ at BBC 1Xtra’s Live Lounge, performing at the prestigious iTunes Festival and BBC’s 1Xtra Live Concert or celebrated the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s inspirational speech, as part of a specially commissioned We Live The Dream UK Tour, ShezAr’s star is clearly in ascendance.

Vocals cameos at the MOBO Awards, Virgin Records 40th Anniversary and the Hotel Cabana UK Tour are an indication of ShezAr’s calibre, as she prepares to take flight as a solo performer.

However, alongside her professional aspirations, ShezAr is passionate about educating and nurturing emerging talent. A seasoned vocal coach of many years standing, she joined the Industry In The Streets team as lead vocal tutor for Capital XTRA’s Music Potential 2012 programme, in turn helping a collective of talented 16-25 year-olds build the skills and confidence to perform at Wembley Arena alongside the likes of Wretch 32, Devin and Angel.

Her participation in Parliament’s Women In Democracy event continues to pave the way for creating positive change. A strong, powerful and highly motivated woman in her own right, ShezAr’s drive to help, encourage and inspire young people to fulfill their dreams led to an event that would make history as the first performance event ever to take place in the House Of Commons’ Portcullis House building.

Indie Londoner Rebecca James Gives You 1000 Roses

Rebecca James is a genuine home-grown musical talent… let’s get that one out of the way.

Having wowed the judges aged just 14 with her rendition of Christina Aguilera’s You Lost Me at the UK Open Mic competition; she’s gone on to build a solid live performance resume having supported the incredible Joan Armatrading, performed at London’s prestigious O2 Arena and after performing at the O2 Academy Islington, was deemed as “one the outstanding performances of 2014” by Jar Music Live.

Her debut release Thinkin’ Bout Me was featured on BBC radio’s ‘Introducing’ and received support from 1xtra, Reprezent and Mi-Soul in addition to community stations across the UK. Online, Rebecca also won over the likes of Digital Spy, RWD and That Grape Juice.

While remaining true to Rebecca’s acoustic/songwriting roots, her forthcoming release 1000 Roses turns the notch up to the next level. Alongside desk-man-of-the-moment Slinky on production duties, Rebecca is a sure bet to be one of the key names to watch as the year draws to an end and gives way to 2015.

    Naylor’s Notes: Derek Buckwalter – RZN8R

Just a guy from the San Francisco Bay area, who has a blast with everybody he loves the most. Even if he doesn’t know you he can still strike up a conversation that’s eligible to last 20 minutes or better. Derek Buckwalter, is a guy with many ideas, and sometimes just not enough paper to lay the idea’s down.  Read on to find out more about, “RZN8R.”

RZN8R, pronounced “resonator,” is the moniker of Oakland-raised producer/singer Derek Buckwalter. Derek draws from a wide array of influences, fusing his passions for singing, new thought spirituality, and beats, to craft deep, lush, hypnotic grooves.

From early childhood, music and creativity pulsed through Derek’s veins. He involved himself in pursuits including piano, and the Oakland-based, Grammy-winning Pacific Boychoir Academy, whom he stayed with for nine years. Derek channeled his interest in spirituality into an extensive involvement with the Centers for Spiritual Living, a faith organization that sees love and connection in all things. He discovered that music production was the middle-man between his singing and spirituality.

Learning music production opened Derek’s sound to whole new avenues of expression and elevated his singing into the 21st century. Derek devoted his pursuit into fusing acoustic music with electronic music and seeking out ways of playing electronic music live. By playing live, he believed that a performer fosters a deeper connection with their audience.

RZN8R is the culmination of Derek’s experiences: his experiences with singing, with music production, his desire to seek out ways of making electronic music more live, as and his spiritual background. While the RZN8R solo project is still in its infancy, Derek is well-versed in good old sonic therapy. He just wants his sound to make you go “oooh.”

Indie Artist Jessie Lowes Debuts New Single

One of Northumberland’s most talented emerging artists, acoustic singer-songwriter, Jessie Lowes is set to release her new single ‘Only One’ November 28th. Following the success of her last single ‘Stars’, Lowes popularity has soared as she gains national recognition for her beautiful, emotive music.

True to Lowes style of raw and emotive lyrics, the new track explores the heartbreak of losing someone you love, in an honest and heartfelt manner.

Lowes life has not been an easy journey and she has been through a series of testing and turbulent times. Spending some of her early life in foster care, music has always been the one constant in Lowes’ life.

Recent years have also been tough on Lowes as she lost her mother of whom she was very close with and has suffered the agony of a marital breakup. The talented Lowes transforms the pain of these torturing times into beautifully moving music that speaks directly from her heart to the audience.

An ex-cage fighter and club level rugby player, Lowes’ masculine background contrasts her delicate lyrics and soulful delivery. Lowes music delves into the depths of human emotion and beautifully expresses the pain and beauty of life.

Lowes has recently released the video for ‘Only One’. The video aptly captures Lowes heartache, delivering a powerful and moving visual of the raw emotion Lowes emits.

‘’She has a very unique personal story to tell. With the right guidance she could really go far’’– Source FM

Lowes much anticipated debut album is set for release soon . ‘Only One’ will be available from November 28th.

    Indie EDM Bemet Releases EP

The composers of electronic music known around the world as Bemet have released their self-titled EP, “Bemet.” The extended-play record contains five original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 15 minutes. It has been proudly published on the InchPerSecond Records independent music label, entirely without financial support from the corporate music industry. Innovative, colorful, infinitely danceable and alive with sonic textures, “Bemet” by Bemet is the latest EDM record to prove that Israel’s electronic music culture produces some of the best in the world.

Rather than naming names, Bemet cite as main artistic influences whole categories of music, including rock, jazz, psychedelia and experimental music, but their actual style belongs to more specific modern categories such as bass music, drum-&-bass, and breaks. The five tracks offered on “Bemet” showcase them as an act which utilizes elements of each to elicit various effects. Their aggressive overtones and tribal, yet sophisticated drums are akin to those found in rock and jazz, respectively. Their opening intro track, “Saboye,” is both psychedelic and experimental in nature, a fitting primer for the rest of the record. They are known in Israel and abroad as a vivifying live performance group.

Bemet are Hod Moshonov and Amir Bresler, composers who blend acoustic and electronic instrumentation for a top-shelf sound that has been turning heads internationally. Prior to Bemet’s official formation in 2013, both Moshonov and Bresler enjoyed years of success as solo artists respectively. Amir Bresler toured the world with famous bassist, singer and composer Avishai Cohen, and has shared the stage with such talents as Daniel Zamir, Alon Olearchick and Shlomo Gronich. Hod Mosohonov, a widely respected composer in the Israeli electronica underground, himself, has collaborated with artists including Yossi Fine, Terri Lyne Carrington, Matti Caspi, and others.

Bemet’s official bio describes them as having together “developed a language based primarily on rhythms, melodies and harmonies,” and an “open sense of humor.” “They combine their personal interpretations and thus form an honest and touching statement out of true, modern music,” it states. Bemet have already collaborated with such names as Laroz, MC Rebel Sun and Ruslan Sirota.

“Bemet” by Bemet is available online worldwide.

    Naylor’s Notes: Unparalleled Height

Have you ever felt chained.  Like you want to run, but no matter how hard you pull away something keeps holding you back?  Unparalleled Height has not only felt like this, but they’ve decided to express the way it made them feel to the entire world.  “Rise of The Voiceless,” expresses the passion, and the mystery of trying to get free.  The passion of wanting to run, but the mystery of the chains holding you back.  Really, it comes down to making a difference.  Don’t be silent, let your voice be heard!!! It’s your voice that could change the world, and if we put our voices together we could all rise before we all fall.  Check out what they had to say during our interview.

When did you start your band?
Our band was formed in the spring of 2010. Justin, Dave, and CJ began jamming some covers together. We then added Tyler who actually began playing bass with us. He switched over to guitar after some time and then we found a bassist who was later replaced by our current bassist James.

    Which instruments do you play?
I am the vocalist of the band but I also play guitar and SOME piano. Most of the band can play multiple instruments.

Describe your musical interests and abilities.
The entire band loves various subgenres of rock and metal. As a band we try to take some influence outside of our genre and apply it to our writing and performing.

    What famous musicians inspire you?
Given that I am a vocalist I look up a lot to: Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, James LaBrie of Dream Theater, Phil Anselmo of Pantera, Brent Smith of Shinedown, and way too many others to list!

What are some of your best musical memories?
The first time I ever performed was in a band where our guitarist Tyler was actually the drummer and singer while I played guitar. We were only about 13 years old and I was too nervous to look at the crowd so I ended up turning my back on the crowd and looking at Tyler the whole time. Luckily we were only performing in front of mainly family and friends.

What public events do you have coming up?
Right now unfortunately we have a ton of stuff going on behind the scenes that we really aren’t able to talk about. We are incredibly excited about it, and can’t wait to share it with everyone. We are always working on our live performance and songwriting.

What would you say to beginners to the industry, who are nervous?
Practice your craft over and over again. Write awesome songs. Then put together the budget to record 3 or 4 of your best songs. Spend the money and invest in yourself if you want to make music your career. Also, learn about business. I read a quote that “music is 10% music and 90% business” while this might be a little exaggerated, it is still very true. In order to become more successful and further your career you need to know business!

How do you balance your music with your family and friends?
This can be a tough balance and I think all active musicians face this struggle. Given that we are such a young band (in our age and career) we don’t have to worry about this as much since we don’t have kids and wives.

Should we be expecting anything new to be released? If so give info.
We released our debut album, “Rise of The Voiceless,” last November. We want to promote that a little while more. As I said earlier we are always writing but as of now we don’t exactly have a time-frame from releasing anything new.

    Where you guys from?
    Pittsburgh, PA.

The Fuse Ready To Set A Spark On UK Tour

Alex Lato is a man with metaphysical visions. As frontman for The Fuse, his lyrics for new single ‘Black Lion’ takes us on a trip to a biblical Heaven and Hell. A loose metaphor for Alex’s experiences in the music industry, Black Lion is a semi-autobiographical romp through the highs and lows of life in pursuit of the rock and roll dream, laid over the grit of a grinding riff from guitarist Simon Bowker. This is energetic pop rock indie for the masses, as much Marilyn Manson as The White Stripes: infectious as hell, and totally delicious to boot.

The song tells of a ‘Roman Soldier’ who sells his body to visit Judas Iscariot – described as a ‘whore’ – in Hell. He then goes to Heaven, where he is arrested and imprisoned for the gravity of his sins, revealed during confession. Taking advantage of his good relationship with St Peter, the Roman soldier escapes and returns to Rome. The song has been described as containing lyricism ‘reminiscent of Led Zeppelin’s III period’, and is The Fuse’s best work to date.

Signed by industry A & R legend Russ Regan (Elton John, Barry White) in 2007, London based The Fuse made their first studio album in LA. Tracks from ‘The Rest Is History’ went on to spend a combined total of 32 weeks in the top 3 of Australia’s IAA chart and enjoyed widespread radio play in the UK .

Over the following years The Fuse steadily built their profile, in 2010 supporting UB40 in Holland. The band went on to perform at several major Dutch festivals including Festyland and Breda Barst, and on the back of a big Twitter campaign The Fuse headlined the Richmond World Music Festival. In 2012 they recorded two EP’s in Germany and in 2013 supported rock legends Foreigner for two dates of their European tour. Currently in the studio with Javier Weyler (Sterophonics 2006-12) the latest album by The Fuse will be released in March 2015 – and if ‘Black Lion’ is anything to go by, it’s going to be an anthem fueled instant classic.

Daily Dose: Guard Of May – Annotata

    69581_624541417593670_283824883_n

Brisbane’s busiest alternative rock act, Guards of May, have been punching out their debut album in the Loose Stones studio on the Gold Coast. Now they are giving people the first look and listen of the new material with a single entitled ANNOTATA and are touring Australia from October-December with a whole heap of their pals, alongside Jericco, Circles, Caligula’s Horse, Sydonia, Young Lions and more.

The as-yet untitled album will be released in the first half of 2015 and marks a major step forward in the band’s sound and feel – into heavier territory, into more complex twists and turns and certainly into new sonic territory. The decision to make the album was one that vulcanised the band into a solid creative unit and they have emerged on the other side a rock-solid force to be reckoned with.

Annotata is the first cut from it and shows a demonstrable heaviness and leap forward for the quintet. The song still features soaring vocals and gigantic guitar sounds, but the new direction takes the listener through a genre journey, light to shade, heavy and soft and everything in between. Catchy and Complex CAN exist in the same space.

Guards of May are now embarking on what is their biggest and most exciting tour to date, taking the stage with Jericco, Circles, Caligula’s Horse, Sydonia, Young Lions, Bound For Ruin, Life Pilot, Let the Number be X and Neotokyo to name a few – at some of the best venues in the country – Ding Dong Lounge, Factory Theatre (Factory Floor), The Coolangatta Hotel and The Brightside.

In just over 2 years, Guards of May have completed numerous East Coast tours and have shared the stage with some of the cream of Australian rock; Grinspoon, Spiderbait, Dead Letter Circus, Sydonia, Helm, Like Thieves and more. Their mix of heavy progressive rock and melodic, dynamically interesting songs sees them turning heads and winning hearts at all turns. They have seen success in other areas too – the film clip for their debut single “Control” was nominated for the 2012 Australian Film Editor’s Guild Autodesk Award, along with the likes of Angus and Julia Stone, Guy Sebastian and Ball Park Music.

Their previous releases have seen them making their way down the East Coast of Australia and the track seeing solid play and accolades on triple j’s The Racket and Home and Hosed, as well as Triple M’s Distortion and New Rock at Night show, AndrewHaugRadio’s Heavy at Home and The Aussie Alternative, just to name a few. Arcadia also featured on US radio shows Rock Radio, Neueregelradio and radiohhh.com. Overwhelmingly positive reviews flowed in, with Heavy and Weird Blog stating “[Arcadia]…excites me because it previews a band who may just be working on a new modern Australian prog rock/metal masterpiece.”

Annotata is out Friday October 17 for purchase in iTunes and all other online stores and all ticket information can be found at http://www.guardsofmay.com.

First Listen: Ummagma – Kiev (Original Mix)

    ummagma

Formed in Moscow in 2003, Canadian Shauna McLarnon and Ukrainian Alexx Kretov have been consistently writing and recording music whilst living between Ukraine and Canada. Shauna’s delicate airy gossamer-like vocals hold glimmers of Cocteau Twins, Stereolab, The Sundays, Curve, Lush, and Slowdive. Alexx’s guitar, vocals, synths, beats and programming create cinematic soundscapes with elements of Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Bill Nelson and Brian Eno, enabling the listener soar above the music.

Ummagma debuted with 2 simultaneous LPs (‘Antigravity’ and ‘Ummagma’) in 2012. They’ve built on the success of those records by collaborating with Moscow’s Sounds of Sputnik on their ‘New Born’ LP, which will be released by UK label Ear to Ear Records on November 21st 2014.

In 2013, Ummagma won the Alternative Eurovision, hosted by Amazing Radio, from 21 countries and repeated the feat in 2014 on Pure FM. They received 2 awards at the 2013 Australian Independent Music Video Awards, often feature in The Scottish New Music Chart, and landed a full-spread feature in Rolling Stone Russia. Ummagma has also caught the attention of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Malcolm Holmes (OMD), who have remixed tracks for forthcoming release.

Emerald & Doreen Recordings is a German boutique record label for futuristic indie, chill & dance music, curated by dedicated audiophile music makers and lovers who pride themselves on selecting the most exciting original material they can find, engaging the services of the most innovative remixers. Emerald & Doreen Recordings released Ummagma’s ‘Rotation/Live and Let Die’ single in December 2013, followed by the ‘Lama’ extended EP in late May 2014.

“A full kaleidoscope of sounds, harmonies and musical instruments… the result is massive with an intricate fabric” Rolling Stone Russia

“Holy early 4AD. The likes of the Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance and The Sundays” Sounds Better With Reverb

“This is a really brilliant post-rocky shoegazey woozy ambient thing. It’s absolutely beautiful” Dani Charlton, Amazing Radio

“An understated and heady concoction that blends the band’s penchant for both dream-pop and shoegaze together excellently” Little Indie Blogs

“Resplendently seduce the star set heavenly formations in a softly unfurling floorshow of sonic snow bursts” God is in the TV Zine

“The hazy melodicism of Cocteau Twins and The Sundays, with further shoegaze elements, more in keeping with the likes of Mazzy Star and Stereolab” AltSounds

    First Listen: Essick – Atriums

    essicks2

Emerging from Brisbane’s fertile music scene, Essick’s eleven-track debut album is full of simple yet effective hooks, tight, complex drum patterns, synthesised electronic flourishes and intricate guitar lines.

Musicians Ravi Das and Freddy MacDougall met in high school and later became close friends, bonding over a shared appreciation of Battles, BADBADNOTGOOD and Seekae, but their first foray into playing music together came much later when Freddy’s band was looking for a bass player. That band dissolved not long after and Ravi went back to his bedroom project Cherry Spliff. Ravi completed a track ‘Atriums’, Freddy instantly fell in love with it, and the collaboration that is Essick was born.

Over the next year and a half, the pair worked tirelessly to hone their songwriting skills before entering Bedlam Studios in late 2013 where they spent five days working with producer Steve Kempnich. They enlisted the help of Brock Weston to replace most drum machines with his swift snare rolls and powerful tom whacks, bringing added energy and attitude to each song. Utilising two synthesisers (specifically a Prophet 08 and a Moog Voyager) and countless guitars to fill in the sound, Kempnich’s production gives each instrument and vocal sound more than enough room to breath. Ravi and Freddy had created the album they set out to produce and were ready to take it to a wider audience.

On the 12th of November 2013, less than a month after the album’s completion, Ravi Das passed away in a horrible drowning accident. A promise was made to Ravi’s family that his music would be released for the world to hear.

Opener ‘Atriums’ sets the tone for the record, its delayed guitar and frenetic drum patterns are present throughout all eleven tracks. Album centrepiece ‘Indica’ begins with a muted guitar before haunting vocals creep in below a simple melody. Essick’s first single ‘Ghost Towns’ brings the energy to fever pitch, teasing the chorus hook early on before revealing it full force like a bull seeing red.

Essick, a mongrelised version of James Blake and Deep Sea Arcade on dexamphetamines, are primed and ready to release this masterful collection of songs into the world and let them spread their wings.

Daily Dose: The Black Delta Movement – The Trip

    10653628_1083770051648856_7639390819993336004_n

THE BLACK DELTA MOVEMENT release their new single “The Trip” on October 8th Available as a digital download and later as a limited edition vinyl single with “The Messenger”, “The Trip” is the band’s updated, but faithful, version of the Kim Fowley underground hit.

“…my fave new bands @bdmofficial and @Templesofficial… Rock roll and onwards and upwards” Liz Kershaw BBCRadio 6 Music

“The Trip’s” songwriter, and original artist and producer, Kim Fowley said, “Great, guys! Thanks so much.” This new recording of “The Trip”, has a timeless quality about it. It was originally recorded and released in 1965 by Kim Fowley who is known as “one of the most colourful characters in the annals of rock & roll” and as “a shadowy cult figure well outside the margins of the mainstream.” Kim discovered and managed “The Runaways”, whose song “Cherry Bomb” (co-written by Kim Fowley and Joan Jett) is currently featured on the gold certified “Guardians of the Galaxy” Soundtrack. Kim’s autobiography, “The Lord of Garbage” reads like a rock and roll hall of fame. “Kim Fowley … is among the more infamous members of the rock and roll community. Best known as the Svengali-manager of “The Runaways”, Kim released an unusual pop single in the mid-60’S called ‘The Trip.’ It is a mainstay of any anthology of 60’s psychedelia” Formed in 2010, The Black Delta Movement have played over 150 gigs up and down the country, building a stellar reputation for themselves with their “wall of sound” rock and roll.

The band is comprises of Matt Burr (guitar and vocals), Dom Abbott (guitar and vocals), Liam Kerman (bass) and Jacob Tillison (drums). The Black Delta Movement efficiently blends garage, rock and roll, blues and psychedelia into their unique sound. Compared favourably with “Black Rebel Motorcycle Club”, “MC5”, “Small Faces” and “The Doors”, The Black Delta Movement draw their influences from a wide musical palette.

“The Trip (The Black Delta Movement Version)” is a version of “The Trip” (Fowley/Geddess/Hardesty). Published by Zulu Music. Used by permission. All rights reserved.

Mitch Winehouse Swings Back to Music for His Second Album

His 2011 debut ‘Rush Of Love’ was Mitch returning to his first love, the Winehouse musical DNA that fuelled daughter Amy and spoke elegantly of a deep love of jazz and swing classics.

That sharp taste and quality control continues on ‘But Beautiful’ a collection of effortlessly performed and lovingly selected standards and a stunning new track.

Co-produced by Grant Black (songwriter for acts as diverse as Run DMC, Sarah Brightman Alicia Keys) and his brother and A&R legend Clive, Grammy nominated James MacMillan is also on production duty.

Grant and Clive’s father, Oscar winning lyricist Don Black, contributes new song ‘Never Too Far From A Song’ a big band tribute to the love of music that sits perfectly alongside the classics.

The album mixes the likes of the finger snapping Learning The Blues (a Sinatra triumph, also shared on duet by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong) and then reflects with title track ‘But Beautiful’ – famously sung in the 1947 movie Road To Rio by Bing Crosby. Several Antonio Carlos Jobim bossa novas complete the mood.

Original or cover, every song tells a personal story and showcases little known jazz and swing gems that Mitch and Amy originally researched together for Rush Of Love.

“These songs are universal, they can be about any relationship,” says Mitch, “a love song doesn’t have to be about your wife or your lover. They can be about your children. ‘Meditation’ is a great song and I sing it to Amy. She used to wonder how anyone could write a song like that, there’s such turmoil and beauty.”

Then there is the surprising opening track, a cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Suit & Tie’, which takes some time to recognise as Mitch expertly immerses the song into the big band jazz ethic.

All of Mitch’s proceeds from the album, just like those of his live work, will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, set up in his daughter’s name after her tragic passing in 2011.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. It also aims to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential.

Music has become central to their work, and ‘supporting the personal development of disadvantaged young people through music’ is one of their key areas of focus. Their Amy’s Yard programme set up in Amy’s own studio, provides talented young people the opportunity to take part in a 3-month accredited programme working one to one with a professional producer, while attending a series of master classes with industry professionals, helping them gain the skills and confidence to become self sustaining music artists.

The Foundation has also piloted ‘Camden Music Works’ in partnership with Camden Council and Westminster Kingsway College, a work experience programme providing placements for unemployed young people within the music industry.

There are numerous studios and music therapy rooms that have been funded by the Foundation, supporting severely disabled children and vulnerable young people to access and make music.

“Music is the best medicine in the world,” Mitch argues, “My thinking has really changed in the last 5 or 6 years when Amy got ill, then got better and then passed away. Now I’m not just singing a song, I’m singing to make myself feel better, to make other people feel better. When we go to children’s hospices, these kids are so profoundly disabled they can’t see or hear but they can feel the beat. They can feel the vibrations, that’s how powerful music can be.

“This music has always been my therapy.”

Help Scott Helmer Bring Jobs Back to the U.S.

Independent touring and recording artist Scott Helmer, who has opened for iconic acts such as Heart, Eddie Money, 3 Doors Down and Big Country, is spending an entire year traveling more than 25,000 miles across America, performing 200+ concerts without charging his own fee in venues ranging from historic theatres to Harley-Davidson dealerships, all to help raise $1 million for good causes. An important new focus of his tour is reindustrializing America in the face of continued job losses.

“I’ve been shocked at the number of communities in which I perform that have seen so many jobs shipped overseas,” Helmer says. “We need to bring those jobs back home for the many deserving Americans who can’t find work. Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp and Billy Joel were singing about this when it started back in the 1980s. Now we’re seeing the true extent of that damage, and I want to help.”

The Support YOUR Cause Tour 2014-2015 kicked off on May 17, 2014 with a motorcycle ride and concert to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) at Los Angeles Harley-Davidson of Anaheim, CA. Originally scheduled to end with a benefit for the Calumet Theatre in Michigan on April 25, 2015, Helmer is extending his tour through December 31, 2015 to accommodate the many historic theatres and other good causes still wanting to participate, including groups working to bring jobs back to America.

Helmer needs sponsorship and support to keep this tour on the road and is offering one ‘Presenting Sponsor’ slot at the $35,000 level to underwrite an RV and five ‘Powered By’ sponsorship slots at the $2,500 level for fuel, an equipment trailer and other basic touring gear. Companies and individuals can learn about the extensive array of benefits and deliverables at the ‘Presenting Sponsor’ information page and the ‘Powered By’ Sponsor information page. Brands will enjoy nation-wide exposure to millions of people as Helmer criss-crosses the country on America’s highways and byways, in addition to extensive print, radio and television coverage.

First announced in November 2013, Helmer’s tour consists of the entertainer’s offer to all charities and nonprofits across America: Upbeat, energetic solo-acoustic set of rock and country favorites along with original material from his new CD, Wake Me When It’s Over, at their fundraising event free of charge. To date, more than 150 groups have signed up, ranging from the Kostopulos Dream Foundation in Salt Lake City, UT to the historic Raymond Theatre in Washington. Helmer will not handle any money or donations on behalf of organizations during his performances on the Support YOUR Cause Tour. “I am simply offering to perform at any fundraising event free of charge, to help them raise money and awareness for their cause,” he explained. His only requirement is that the charity has a goal to raise at least $5,000 during their event.

After making a huge mistake back in 2008 that cost him his livelihood and his family, Helmer hit the reset button on his life, building a new one based on three simple things: Creating music, performing music, and helping others. The singer is also an enthusiastic volunteer for Musicians On Call and will continue his commitment to their efforts during this tour.

Good causes and historic theatres across America can fundraise with the 2014-2015 edition of Helmer’s tour. To be considered, fill out the registration form. Scott Helmer proudly endorses Elixir Strings and Gator Cases.
