Graham Aitchison: Coming Out of the Abyss A Better Person

    book-profile

At some point in all of our lives, we come to a point when we ask ourselves “Am I crazy? What is wrong with me?” to some degree or another. What that is in most of us is depression. Depression comes in many forms and originates from many causes and we all suffer from it at some point or points in our lives but what defines us in the end is how we handle depression and what we do about it. What is sometimes considered “uncommon knowledge” is that every single one of us has the power to beat depression instilled within us and if that can be realized then it is so easy to become not only a stronger person but a better person as well.

Jammerzine talks with Graham Aitchison. He is a musician and author that has not only conquered his depression, but documented it as a guide for combating what could be a crippling illness if you let it become that. Please take a listen to hear how you too can learn to better yourself and to truly realize that there is “No Way Out But Through”.

    Depression Statistics (from aada.org):

    • 6.6% of the U.S. adult population will experience major depression within a 12-month period.
    • Rates of diagnosis of depression vary based on states. In 2006-2008, North Dakota had the lowest rate (4.8%) while Mississippi had the highest rate (14.8%), according to Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data.
    • Bipolar disorder, which involves alternating periods of depression and mania, affects about 6 million people in the United States, or about 3% of the total adult population.
    • Over 80% of people with symptoms of clinical depression are not receiving any specific treatment for their depression.
    • According to a study done at Harvard, the number of patients diagnosed with depression increases by approximately 20% per year.

Daily Dose: Dubarray – Visions Collide

People speak of tripping the light fantastic – if ever there were an aural form of this visceral experience, it is Australia’s DUBARRAY – a unique live electro outfit creating music that moves people and resonates to their core.

They have returned to Australian soil from a solid 5 months in Europe, playing shows and festivals in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Portugal and more to release their second full-length album ‘Visions Collide.’ The record will be released in stores and online Friday November 7th through MGM Distribution.

Inspired by the likes of St Germain, Groove Armada, Thievery Corporation, Portishead & Moloko, DUBARRAY deliver everything from groove based trip hop beats to punchy house, and tribal percussion all layered on a bed of electronic ambience and euphoric vocals.

Dubarray have been dominating the entire European continent for the past 3 years and have been returning annually for the festival season. They have performed at House De Elements Fest Austria, Festival Des Arcs Switzerland, Landjuweel Festival Amsterdam 2013, Lancaster Music Festival UK, Alstadtzauber Festival Austria 2012 and Didge & Bass Festival Austria 2012/13. Those appearances, combined with the home fires still burning, have stapled Dubarray as an internationally recognised force in the independent music scene.

Back in Australia, the story is much the same, with triple j love for the first two singles from 1st album Ebb & Flow (Verruckte Dancer and New Beginning), as well as festival appearances and packed east coast tour dates in support of the first album. The 2013 Musicoz awards saw them nominated 4 times and in the top ten artists on the night.

At the heart of Dubarray is the husband and wife team of Brett and Kate Gadenne. Their sounds intertwine and take life on the stage and on record. Their fire ignites on stage and combined with Damian Campbell’s beats create a mesmerising and entrancing spectacle that no-one can deny.

Their album tour takes place from October to December 2014, taking in QLD, NSW, VIC and WA in an epic run of invigorating and sensory-overloading shows, taking in venues such as The Espy, Mojo’s Bar, The Vanguard, The Motor Room and more.

Their brand new full length album – Visions Collide – is set to be released on 7 November 2014 in Australia through MGM Distribution and internationally online. Dubarray will tour Australia nationally from October-December.

Old Habits Die Hard For The Heavytrackerz

It seems that The HeavyTrackerz have the Midas touch and artists are flocking to work with the production trio as everything they touch is turning to music gold!

Responsible for the number 13 hit ‘German Whip’, plus new single ‘One Too Many’ and the currently widely playlisted ‘Not That Deep’ from Stormzy (along with his whole E.P) as well as the UK remix for Vic Mensa’s ‘Down on my Luck’; The HeavyTrackerz take a slight diversion, showing their broad abilities in musical genres, as they switch up the flow and take it to the dance floor with their first solo release, ‘Old Habits’ – and there’s no doubt it’s another smash for the guys!

Opening with a bouncing piano riff followed by the drum beat kicking in and a sweet vocal from Yana Toma, this one is in instant head turner when you hear it pouring through the speakers and flowing in to your ears.

Signing to Bucks Music Group this year and having previously produced for Wiley, Big Narstie, Roll Deep, J2K, JME, Boy Better Know, Jammer, Ghetts, Newham Generals & Rascals, the production outfit have consistently been a staple favorite for artists but the trio’s public awareness spiraled when Meridian Dan’s anthem was released earlier this year and with that whispered tag as their track trademark, there’s no doubt when it’s a ‘Trackerz’ production!

Audiences will be able to see a film shot in 1953 in 3-D for the first time October 14, when the 3-D Film Archive releases “Dragonfly Squadron,” the company’s first 3-D Blu-Ray, distributed through Olive Films.

“Dragonfly Squadron” tells the story of Air Force Major Matthew Brady (John Hodiak), assigned to train a squadron of South Korean pilots, and attempting to have them combat-ready in half the usual time allowed. At the air base at Kongju, Brady comes face to face with a former love (Barbara Britton), the wife of an army medical officer (Bruce Bennett). When enemy forces invade, most of the American personnel are evacuated, but Brady remains behind with the barely-trained South Korean troops.

Completed in late 1953, just as the production output of 3-D movies in that period was in decline, “Dragonfly Squadron” was only released in a 2-D version. The 3-D Film Archive has located and preserved the film from the original negative elements. Utilizing state-of-the-art stereoscopic restoration techniques, the film has been aligned shot-by-shot for an optimum 3-D presentation. “We faced many unique challenges in restoring this lost stereoscopic feature, including the deterioration of important 35mm elements. We rescued it just in time” says 3-D Film Archive founder and director Bob Furmanek. “The original stereoscopic alignment issues have now been corrected and the 3-D presentation is flawless. Sixty years later, we can see finally see it as the filmmakers originally intended.”

    Bonus features include:

    • 2-D Version for non-3-D-capable Blu-Ray players
    • Original theatrical trailer

    DETAILS:

    • “DRAGONFLY SQUADRON” in 3-D
    • Previously lost 3-D Korean War Film to be released on Blu-ray for the first time.

Blend.io Will Do More Than Blend In

Blend, the premier music collaboration platform, has partnered with the distribution powerhouse The Orchard to offer its community of producers and musicians a digital distribution outlet via the official Blend.io label.

Blend sees the addition of a record label as a natural progression of the expanding platform by providing everything a music producer needs in one place: inspiration, collaboration, record deals, and distribution. By partnering with The Orchard, a music distributor that amplifies reach and revenue across hundreds of digital, physical and mobile outlets around the world, the Blend label is able to deliver music through a proven infrastructure to every digital music outlet.

Blend has managed to democratize the music publishing process and puts more control in the hands of its artists. It’s easy to see which songs and remixes gain the most notoriety in the vibrant Blend community as Blend members vote for their favorite pieces and engage with the music of their preferred producers. When a song or remix reaches a certain level of votes, it has a good chance of being included in the label’s line-up. This way, the decision of which pieces makes it to publication is not up to one executive but is made by a vote of peers – a revolutionary new model for music distribution.

“We don’t want to be arbiters of taste,” said Kolundzija in a recent interview with Billboard Magazine “We want to see what’s happening with the platform and if there’s activity around certain projects we want to give those projects a bigger stage and the label and distribution deal allows us to do that.”

The label will develop up and coming talent as well established artists who are interested in new and innovative ways to connect, engage and create with their fans. Apart from the instant audience on Blend, the label will support marketing and help the artists to monetize their work through distribution.

“We built the label arm to further inspire and empower our users and artists. We continue to see how our platform encourages personal connection as well as workflow and creativity, and with our new capabilities we’ll be able to further foster these relationships and give even more back to the community,” adds Guy Licata, Blend Label Manager.

Naylor’s Notes – Alexandra Zerner of Another Destiny Project

When did you start your band?
I actually don’t have a band.  I am a solo artist and I play electric guitar since 1993.  I am now working on my debut solo album now and it will be available in few weeks.

    Which instruments do you play?
Electric and Acoustic Guitar, Piano/Keyboards, Bass, Mandolin, & Drum programming.

Describe your music interests and abilities.
I am interested in many different styles, but I prefer progressive rock.  It gives many opportunities to mix interesting and colorful parts and approaches, which can be very challenging at certain points.  Especially when you try to integrate very different styles into a single track.

    What famous musicians inspire you?
Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Tony MacAlpine, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Dream Theater, Rush, Yes, Metallica, Pink Floyd, J.S.Bach, Roland De Lassus.

What is some of your best musical memories?
Of course, one of the best and memorable things about music is getting my first guitar, when I was 7…  It was a small classical guitar, because I was a kid.  I played for like a year and I got bored by the exercises and the pieces I had to play.  My mom hid my guitar and I thought she threw it away, because I wasn’t dedicated to it.  I cried so much…  It was the moment, which I realized, that I love the guitar and I will never leave it.

I don’t really remember my first appearances in front of a crowd, because they were some small concerts in the local music facility, where I was studying guitar, also because I was playing pieces I don’t like.   I always wanted to play rock on electric guitar, so maybe the most notable public performance in my early stages of the electric guitar was me playing Paganini’s 24th Caprice… I was so stiff, that I still wonder how I played it…  I was 14 years old then.  These were the years that I saw Steve Vai, and John Petrucci playing on 7-string guitars, and I became possessed by the idea of having an extra low string.  There were many years of struggle, because I live in Bulgaria, and these years it was very hard, because the communistic regime had just ended.

I got my current 7-string Ibanez in 2005, and I still play on it – it is one of my favorite guitars.  Of course, I was extremely happy when I bought it.  Now I am waiting for my new 8-string to arrive and I feel the same fever as when I got any of my guitars – I actually do not own many – Two acoustics – a 6 and a 12-string, two electric – 6, and 7-strings and one 5-string bass.

What public events do you have coming up?
I am not playing any gigs, because here you pay more to reach the point to have a gig,  than to actually profit from the gig.  Of course, there are a couple of cover bands, that succeed to earn some money, but that’s all.  I won’t play in a cover band, so I am working as a guitarist, music teacher, and session guitar player.  I don’t play live, but I stay busy working on my music, which is about to be released very soon.

What would you say to beginners to the Music Industry, who are nervous?
They must be patient and dedicated to what they do.  They must have a passion and never give up, because the struggle is long and hard, but it is rewarding.  Also, they must stand their principles and not sell themselves for cents. The artist must have a soul and a dignity, because the art is a higher level of communication, and it needs to be pure, despite all the “pop stars”, that drown the world in mediocrity and triteness.

How do you balance your music with your family and friends?
Most of my friends are musicians, so it is easy…  There is no need to balance, because it’s happening on its own.  My family is just my mother and my sister, who support me in everything I do, so it is very easy, and nice.

Should we be expecting anything new to be released
My début solo album “Nine Stories” is almost ready and it will be released in few weeks and will be available in iTunes.

What do you think about Another Destiny Project?
I am very excited about Another Destiny Project, because it has wonderful opportunities to work with many interesting people from all over the world, and there are no limits, which I find amazing.  This is another proof, that music is a higher level of communication.

Are you excited to be working with other artists’ from around the world?

Yes, of course.  It is challenging and helps you to understand many different approaches and points of view, also the art itself is so colorful, individual, and unpredictable, so such interaction can give you a whole new world.

Where can we follow your career at?

    1551690_488175664659418_4401731840967903707_n

Growing up, an adolescent teenager, in the early 90’s had its advantages; especially when it came to the music aspect. Hip Hop and RnB groups like Naughty by Nature and Boyz II Men were kicking off their own sound, with a touch of “old skool,” Nirvana ruled the rock world with their Seattle/grunge anthem, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Michael Jackson videos were televised world premiers, and MTV was in its prime, before the invasion of the countless and meaningless reality shows (excluding The Real World). But for this Philadelphia born, Southern New Jersey raised artist, it was like having the best of all worlds. Therefore, becoming an awesome study guide on how to perfect his own craft.

Starting out as a local open mic/small venue favorite in 2003, the South Jersey/Philly area was a great stepping stone, throughout the various circuits – Philly fans take no prisoners, even against their own. Fortunately, they took mercy on his alternative rock/blues style. With the help of catchy lyrics and sweet sounding riffs, his craft was coming along nicely.

After an unofficial eight year hiatus, he’s back on the scene. Now residing in Wisconsin, with the same catchy lyrical style, same alternative/blues flow… but with a vengeance. Following the influences of The Jackson 5, The Doors, White Stripes, and Temptations (to name a few), he’s firing up the grill again and ready to serve it up hot – so get your plates ready!

    Ready… Set… Go!

Following the success of their debut single ‘Count to Ten/Messing With History’, The Four Fours, the masked trio from Derbyshire, are ready to ‘Go’ with their new single due out 27th October.

‘Go’ showcases the band’s melodic side and songwriting ability. The track has an alternative rock edge as well as being infectious and accessible, in keeping with the band’s sound.

The band previously performed in math rock outfit ‘You Slut!’ receiving a host of positive reviews from the likes of Kerrang and Rock Sound. Highlights include performing a session at Maida Vale studios for Huw Stevens on Radio 1.

The Four Fours formed out of an impulse to create direct rock songs, although they also love a bit of mystery. An album is due out in early 2014.

At the time of writing The Four Fours are Alternative Tracks’ artist of the week. The band has received radio play across the UK and US and are gaining popularity across the rock scene. Their first release ‘Count to Ten/Messing With History’ was played by Aaron Phillips on Amazing Radio who continues to support the band with recent airplay.

    What people are saying:
“The Four Fours pen songs raw and well-crafted, infections and impressive” – Rock Britain

“Fusing heavy rock attitude with ballsy riffs and infectious hook-fuelled supercharged melodies.” – Alternative Tracks

“They know exactly the sound they’re after, and while it is raw and punk-y, it is polished and refined and makes me want to hear more” – Mistree Magazine

30th Anniversary History of PRS Captured In A Book

It’s been 30 years since Paul Reed Smith set up the first PRS guitar factory in Annapolis, Maryland, and the electric models that have appeared since – the original Customs, the refined McCartys, the decorative Dragons, the upscale Private Stocks, and the latest S2s – have reflected Smith’s continuing desire to develop and improve the instrument that bears his name.

The PRS Electric Guitar Book, written by Dave Burrluck and published by Backbeat Books, follows the company’s progression from its origins in a small workshop to a leading player in the global guitar market, one who’s instruments are highly regarded and played by guitarists such as Carlos Santana, Dave Navarro, Al Di Meola, Zach Myers, Neal Schon, Mark Tremonti and countless others.

The PRS Electric Guitar Book is three books in one. First, there is a comprehensive collection of fine photographs that illustrates every corner of the PRS story. Dozens of historic and current guitars are pictured along with players, ads, catalogs, and rare memorabilia. Second is the absorbing tale that takes readers from the “pre-factory” guitars that Smith built for Peter Frampton, Howard Leese and others, up to the wide array of models that fill the current PRS catalog. Third, there’s a useful reference section that provides all the information PRS players and collectors need that includes a detailed model database, serial number interpretation, specifications, and more.

This revised and updated edition of The PRS Electric Guitar Book is a must for all guitar players and fans.

    About the Author:
Dave Burrluck is one of the most experienced guitar journalists in the world and is currently Gear Reviews Editor of Guitarist, Total Guitar, and Guitarist Presents Acoustic magazines. He is the author of The Player’s Guide To Guitar Maintenance and a contributor to Electric Guitars: The Illustrated Encyclopedia and Totally Guitar. A working musician, songwriter, and producer, he lives in London England.

Daily Dose: Kivanc Kilicer – Dew On Roses

    10522573_984314828261208_572660565301946448_n

Kivanc Kilicer started his professional music career as the frontman of the hard n’ heavy band Element in 2007.

After composing and releasing two studio albums with the band, he focused on his international solo project Gravity, where he found himself exploring various combinations of contrast tunes and blending them with pure hard rock sound.

“Unable to contain the everlasting resource of melody and riff inside of me, I couldn’t just enjoy listening to and covering music. Therefore I decided composing my own in 2005. My main interest has always been a blend of progressive rock and symphony; both of which require special attention on emotions, balance and clarity”

Having a solid experience on VSTs and DAWs, Kivanc created his home studio in 2010, which took him to a new level of non-stop creation. He worked through all processes of composing his songs including writing the lyrics, recording the instruments, singing the vocals and doing his own mixes. Strapped down under the genre limitations of local record companies, favouring more traditional pop/rock sound and following different musical expectations of former band members he decided to proceed on his own.

“It was another level for me where I finally created my first solo tracks at an international scale. A brand new experience, a brand new world”

    – KIVANC –

    Achievements:

    • 2007 – Lead vocalist of Element on the Cehennem album. Extras: All lyrics for 8 songs including the title song were written and composed by Kivanc
    • 2008 – Performed at Park Orman, as the only opening band for the legendary Scorpions in their Humanity tour
    • 2009 – Composed “Neden” as a soundtrack for a local movie project
    • 2010 – Lead vocalist and lead guitarist of Element’s 2nd album – The Ant where most of the songs were Kivanc’s compositions
    • 2013 – Element was chosen as the sole opening band for Europe’s Final Countdown Istanbul Concert
    • Four professional video clips were put on rotation in national channels
    • Numerous gigs in various cities
    • Numerous commercial projects and jingles for premium domestic brands
    • Three film soundtrack compositions

First Listen: Kicking Harold – Kill You

    kickingharold1

Kicking Harold are modern rock alchemists, synthesizing hard rock, alternative, metal and dance-pop elements, to generate radio gold. But this isn’t some hollow sleight of hand. New album Red Light District boasts twelve expertly sequenced potential singles poised to erupt on multiple platforms. And every slugger in this murderers’ row boasts a home run hook, from the supercharged strut of lead track ‘American Nitro’ (“I’m crazy / like De Niro, Scorsese”) to the passionate entreaty of the newly-resuscitated ‘Kill You’ (“Would it kill you if I told you I loved you?”)

The first order of business is to do right by Kicking Harold’s loyal, patient fan base. ‘Kill You’ originally appeared on the band’s 1996 MCA debut, Ugly & Festering. But due to spools of red tape that would strangle a lesser band, the fan favorite has long been out of print. Luckily, frontman Tim David Kelly conceived a novel solution: rerecording and modernising ‘Kill You’ as Red Light District’s centerpiece single.

“I wanted to retrack Kill You to give something back to the original fans who can’t get it anymore, and also use it as kind of a rebooting of the franchise for new fans, as they say,” Kelly laughs. “People still love this song and we still play it live, so it made sense to give it some new life and a really cool new video as well.”

Indeed, Kicking Harold are that rare breed of band who recognises, respects and learns from their past. Fans of auto makeover reality show Overhaulin’ (originally on TLC, recently revamped on Velocity/Discovery) will recognise staccato rager “Gasoline” as the theme music. Kelly credits this placement for saving his band. After third album Space Age Breakdown, members had gone their separate ways and Kelly was prioritising his production work (he has an impressive litany of TV and film credits). But Overhaulin’ unexpectedly made a sleeper hit out of Gasoline. Generating millions of YouTube views and awakening the hibernating Kicking Harold once again. Always striving to stay on top of preserving the band’s legacy, Kelly subsequently reissued Space Age Breakdown in 2006 with extra tracks, recorded and released the band’s forth album Zombies, Cars & Evil Guitars in 2010, and re-released the ultra rare second album, Return Of The Bulbmen in early 2014.

Back to the future, Red Light District offers the perfect balance of classic and contemporary. Kelly loves the big riffs and dancier elements of new jacks like Young the Giant and Shiny Toy Guns, (see: ‘Drinkin’ to Forget You’, ‘Dance to the Radio’), but also the melodic thunder of ageless grunge heroes like Foo Fighters and Stone Temple Pilots.

“I have always tried to make albums where you have pretty, acoustic things next to really heavy, riffy stuff, so there is a broader range of material,” Kelly says. “I like heavy music, but I am also very attached to melodies. I try to put the two together to get it as rocking as I can, while never losing the hooks, the pop part.”

That explains Red Light District’s lone cover: Kelly’s unique take on INXS’ sultry 1987 smash ‘Need You Tonight’, which explodes with auto-wah attitude “I felt like their songs were made to be done heavier-they always sound like heavy riffs to me, just done with clean guitar.” Kelly says, going on to underscore Kicking Harold’s winning philosophy: “I learned from a producer a long time ago that if you’re gonna do a cover, do a #1 song, because it’ll always be a #1 song.” Now that he’s all caught up tying his past to the present, Kelly can finally go about the business of delivering Kicking Harold’s own hits.

Joined by guitarist Bret Domrose and drummer Peter Burke, Kelly has once again pulled Kicking Harold’s Delorean out of the garage with the flux capacitor set to rock 2015 & beyond.

Miami-based producer makes Pop Rox Muzik debut

‘Fallout’ is a no-holes-barred big room anthem that’s soaked in high-energy synths and boasts a top-end production job, making David Messeri’s latest effort one of the most impactful releases we’ve heard on Pop Rox for a while. The dramatic breakdown starts out a little less chaotic as the low-passed synth plucks out the track’s lead melody without overstating the energy levels for the intro. It’s when the filters rip open and the full force of David Messeri’s lead is unleashed that ‘Fallout’ becomes a full-scale dance party. Peppered with vocal lashes, huge FX blasts and high velocity risers – the transition from the break is a rollercoaster of tension and release that unravels into the main drop. The timely introduction of the main body lets off a rocket of a bass drum that thuds the low end and dominates the available dynamics, whilst still retaining the bite of the main lead – a very tidy production effort from David Messeri. The leads continue to stream over the bass notes, which are only interrupted by a batch of creative and original fills and switches. It’s a bold and aggressive march to David’s beat, which is produced to levels way above his current reach and will no doubt impress the discerning dance music fan.

It’s a big effort from David and a statement of intent for the future. The production quality and overall impact of his production work shows a real technical ability for bigger things and with time on his side, you can’t help but see a bright future ahead for the Miami-based talent.

Daily Dose: Kristin Rader – Undeniably You

    218470_210600712296427_538090_o

Passionate, Intimate, and Life Changing is the best way to describe the virtuous and dynamic spirit of Kristin Rader. With a life full of charisma and passion to worship, she only knew one way to fully serve God, with her voice.

With years of experience and vocal training, Kristin has given her life to perfect her instrument. As a child she was given the stage and stunned crowds with her powerful, yet calming voice. After High School she knew she wanted to pursue higher education and that no other path would leave her more fulfilled than training herself in her passion. Kristin went on to earn a collegiate vocal scholarship and was given the opportunity to sing in multiple countries around the world such as Ireland, England, Wales, Bahamas, and Mexico. After graduating from Lee University, she had the privilege of being apart of of the prestigious Chattanooga Symphony Opera Chorus.

As a teenager, Kristin found herself struck in the midst of tragedy. Her life was turned upside down with news that her father was diagnosed with Cancer. A short three weeks after his diagnosis, he was taken to be with the Lord. Before he left her however, he imparted wisdom that will forever be engraved in her heart. “No matter what happens to me, God Is Still God.” After this tragedy, Kristin’s mother went through a period of deep dark depression. Not only was she left with the emptiness of loosing her father, she now had to deal with the after effects of her mothers struggles.

Attempting to cope with the devastation of her fathers death and mothers trials, she had no other place to turn other than God. Through the wisdom of her father, and the strength of her Heavenly Father, Kristin was able to use this tragedy to strengthen her faith and hope in the Lord.

Through these trials, Kristin was given an amazing opportunity. She now has the ability to use her story as a means of expression to show triumph and victory over dark circumstances. With every great story, creates an opportunity to eloquently express how struggles change a persons life. Kristin Rader is a true testament of God using the struggles of one individual to encourage others.

With life focused on music, she had one dream, to use her gifts to reach believers and unbelievers. “I want my music to be an outlet of encouragement to everyone who hears it. Music is the one avenue that we all have in common, there is no better median we can use to reach others.” Knowing this, she recorded her debut album “Undeniably You.” Each song leaves you wanting to hear more, while inductively sending a message to all listeners.

Kristin prides herself in focusing her career on ministry. Few artists are able to bridge the gap between knowing oneself, and expressing oneself for God in such a way as Kristin. With her mind geared toward people, her music effortlessly shines the light of Christ. Each new adventure is a new opportunity for her to share her amazing testimony with others.

“My prayer is to be a voice of encouragement that reaches beyond my music. I hope that each individual that hears these songs will be blessed. Life is full of uncertainty, but with God, everything that seems unclear will eventually become evident of His true plan and purpose.”

“For I know the plans I have for you” sayeth the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope for the future.” Jeremiah 29:11

European post-hardcore outfit Island Of Skylines has released their new track, entitled “The New Sunrise.” The acoustic track is expected to be on a mini acoustic album to be released at a later date. Until then, the song may be purchased on Imminence Records’ Bandcamp exclusively. The track follows the band’s July 15th reissue of their 2013 Fight Your Fears EP. The release featured two new tracks, “Indigo” and “I’ll Be Home,” and a special remix of “Indigo” by Systemshock. Vocalist Ilya Sinitski commented on their current plans, “We are currently working on our full length album that we want to bring a new awesome sound to our music with. This fall we plan to go out on tour, record a mini acoustic album, and shoot a music video! Needless to say, we have a busy year planned!”

First Look: Dirty Dishes – Thank You Come Again

DIRTY DISHES formed in Boston Massachusetts after songwriter Jenny Tuite (guitar/vocals) and Alex Molini (synth/bass) attended the same party. Having had far too much to drink, Alex vomited all over Jenny’s shoes, but got her number from a mutual friend and called the next day to apologise and offer to buy her some new shoes. Putting the shoe/vomit thing to one side, it came up in conversation that Jenny was looking for a synth player and Alex fitted the bill. The duo began combining grunge and rock with trippy experimental elements that saw them quickly gain attention on the East Coast’s vibrant music scene.

Having toured extensively, played SXSW, performed live sessions for Converse and Noisey and supported the likes of Passion Pit, Autolux, Speedy Ortiz, Trail of Dead, Best Coast and Weezer, the band have relocated to Los Angeles where they’re making an equally big impression on the West Coast’s music scene.

Dirty Dishes new single ‘Thank You Come Again’ is released on 29th September and will be followed by an East Coast tour beginning on October 12th, including an Exploding In Sound Showcase at Brooklyn’s Trash Bar on October 24th.

    Naylor’s Notes: Bad Newsz Greatest

It’s only a few, and then it ain’t true. Bringing back Hip Hop Dynamics like; Eazy E, and Too Short. Bad Newsz Greatest produces his own sound and genre he calls, “Rogue.” Check out what he had to say during our interview.

When did you start your musical journey?
I started recording in 2008, but I’ve been writing music since I was about 9 years old.

    Which instruments do you play?
I mainly rap at the moment, but right now I’m getting the hang of an MPC. Later I’ll be working on getting to know the piano.

Describe your musical interests and abilities.
I love to create different sounds/genres of music. I like to show lyrical ability, while creating timeless forever type music.

    What famous musicians inspire you?
The only artist I really listen to is me. I’m always working on new music so I never have the opportunity to listen to other artists.

What is your best musical memory?
It was at a 5th grade graduation party in Carson. The DJ asked if anybody could rap, or sing. I raised my hand, and he told me if it was ok with the mom who threw the party that my friend and I could get on the mic. We asked her, she said yes, and that she would pay us 5 dollars! We performed and rapped over, “Biggie Smalls Juicy.” We were lit!!! – (Laughs) we ran up to the lady with a crowd of ten behind us all hype like “where’s our money?!” she was like, “here’s 5 dollars.” I was like, “hold up you said 5 each!” She said nope “$2.50 a piece.” (Laughs) Good Times.

What public events do you have coming up?
I will be releasing a single before this month is up and also some merchandise in Oct.

What would you say to beginners in the industry who are nervous?
I would tell them O.A.F.O.U.L Only A Few of Us Left.

How do you balance your music with your family and friends?
The only ones that I see are my son, and few others in my family. I really don’t see the rest of them too often because of music, and all my other friends are in jail.

Should we be expecting anything new to be released? If so give info.
Yup – very soon. “I Live Forever | the Album.” should be releasing before the year is up. New music, and new merchandise coming soon, along with videos and showcases.

Rogue is a new sound/genre I stumbled upon while creating this. album. O.A.F.O.U.L is the 2nd Rogue record I’ve created, it’s produced by Hucci. It is the 4th single from the, “I Live Forever (album coming soon).” This record was recently released on iTunes & is featured on MTV. It’s also on the Shazma app & Google play.

California is home to many Hip-Hop artists, but none like Bad Newsz Greatest. Born and raised in Southern California with a unique style that will take you around the world. Coming off his sophomore
mixtape D.R.U.G.S (Dreams Reached Ugly Goal’s) there is a lot of buzz surrounding his name. Mixing old school traditional Hip Hop with new wave he has coined his own sound and following. I won’t say he’s known around the world, but he definitely gets around in the U.S. His biggest performance to date was one he had in Manhattan, New York! He literally gets love from West to East. Putting out D.R.U.G.S 2 – on Feb. 23rd, which has been doing great numbers and getting him the buzz he needs. Currently he is working on his 1st album called ‘I live forever’. The album has a tremendous amount of buzz around it; the three singles that have been released are featured on MTV & more than 50 music/fashion websites around the world. I live forever is set to be released in 2014.

Young Singer Living with Autism Joins All Star Nation Tour

Kyle Cousins – a singer, songwriter, and musician living with Autism – will share his personal experiences with overcoming bullying and Autism while participating on the Allstar Nation Tour, a peer-to-peer national concert tour to combat in-school bullying.

The Allstar Nation Tour features young recording artists whom have been bullied. They hold 90-minute assemblies performing Top 40 and original music to connect with students. Between performances, the artists speak out against bullying, share personal experiences, and prevention methods. Performance assemblies are free to schools and typically held twice a day.

“Autism won’t stop my dreams,” said Cousins. “I’ve been bullied in school because of my Autism. My journey has taken me from being an outcast to a place now where I really feel good about myself and know that others respect me for my talent.”

The Richmond, Texasnative lost his ability to speak when he was two years old. Now 25, years of intensive interventions and family support have allowed the University of Houston graduate to make continual progress and express himself onstage through music.

Cousins discovered his ability to write music when he was a high school senior. Song writing became a tool for him to express his innermost thoughts and feelings, which was difficult to do in typical conversations. His anthem, “Everybody Wants to be Heard,” was licensed by Autism Speaks as their theme song. The single has been used over the years in the organization’s annual national campaign “Walk Now for Autism.” His latest single “Home” will be released early next year.

Cousins joins several Texans on the tour including Branden Mendoza, 21, who competed on NBC’s “The Voice” Season 6 held earlier this year; Tristan Blaine, 15, a favorite among younger fans who refer to themselves as “Blaniacs”; and Micaiah Walker, 24, lead singer of popular Houston rock band VerseCity. Nashville recording artist Jessie Chris, 17, of Boston is also performing and speaking out against bullying.

The group is scheduled to perform in two Texas cities reaching more than 10,000 students through the end of October. Performances in Houston and Dallas area schools include:

    Houston:

    • Monday, Sept. 29 – Duett Middle School, 9:00 am and 1:00 p.m.
    • Wednesday, Oct. 1 – Twin Creeks Middle School, 3:00 p.m.
    • Friday, Oct. 3 – Mayde Creek High School, 9:00 a.m.

    Dallas:

    • Thursday, Oct. 9 – Scott Johnson Middle School, 9:00 a.m.
    • Friday, Oct. 10 – Strickland Middle School, 8:30 a.m.
    • Tuesday, Oct. 14 – Delay Middle School, 9:00 a.m.
    • Wednesday, Oct. 15 – Hudson Middle School, 3:00 p.m.
    • Thursday, Oct. 16 – Delay Middle School, 9:00 a.m.
    • Monday, Oct. 27 – W.E. Greine Exploratory Arts Academy, 9:00 a.m.
    • Tuesday, Oct. 28 – W.E. Grenier Exploratory Arts Academy, 9:00 a.m.
    • Wednesday, Oct. 29 W.E. Grenier Exploratory Arts Academy, 9:00 a.m.

Cousins released his first full album – titled Spectrum – in 2009. The title not only refers to the autism spectrum, but also describes the wide variety of original music and lyrics he creates and performs, singing lead and back-up vocals as well as playing the keyboards. He has also written and recorded songs for a proposed HBO pilot, as well as the 2010 film Born to be a Star.

The Allstar Nation Tour started in August and has already touched more than 15,000 students and faculty at several Houston area schools. It is expected to visit more than 100 schools in 30 districts throughout Texas this year before heading to Florida in early 2015.

Desert Sparrow releases debut EP ‘Leave This Town’

The indie music duo known as Desert Sparrow have released their debut EP record, “Leave This Town.” The record comprises four original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 18 minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release entirely without support of the corporate music infrastructure. A seamless blend of contemporary folk and old-fashioned, bluesy rock ‘n’ roll, “Leave This Town” is a raw and unadulterated serving of sound any music fan can get behind.

The heart and soul of Desert Sparrow are Kylie Adams and David Carreno. They cite as main artistic influences Fleetwood Mac, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Kings of Leon, and Angus and Julia Stone. This list of legendary groups does not add up to a round understanding of the Desert Sparrow style, however. Desert Sparrow are natural musicians in the truest sense of the word. Their undeniably great vocals and refreshingly tasteful instrumentation are merely ancillary qualities, the proverbial icing on the cake in light of startlingly solid songwriting that is (literally) packaged for play on public radio around the world.

The sense of Desert Sparrow simply going outside to enjoy themselves with a song or two and incidentally making a four-star album is palpable. This unassuming goodness is also reinforced by a characteristic humility that can’t help but distinguish them in the land of competition that is Los Angeles. Asked to describe their start in music, this modesty is plain to see.

They write that they began by attending “Singer-songwriter nights for fun. Everybody around us kept hassling us saying that we needed to give the music business a shot.”

Asked to describe the underlying message of their first official album, Desert Sparrow explains that “The main theme of the EP is believing in your dreams. Don’t let anything or anyone get you down. Get out there and make it happen. Don’t conform because it’s easy, be true to yourself.”

“Leave This Town” by Desert Sparrow is available online worldwide.

Will Sing For Food will be discontinued on October 15th…

The digital version of Will Sing For Food will be discontinued on October 15th. CreateSpace (the service through which the album is released) is discontinuing all their MP3s on that date. The CD version will continue to be available.

The charity album features fifteen songs from fifteen Rockford, Illinois area musicians. All music has been donated by the artists and all the cover photographs (also by Rockford area photographers) have been donated. All profits from the album go directly to the Rock River Valley Food Pantry.

The Rock River Valley Pantry provides food to those in urgent need. As a community based pantry they provide 3-4 days of healthy, nutritious food to men, women, and children every month. In October 2013 7,895 clients used the pantry. 40% were children and 7% were over the age of 65. They rely on food drives, fundraisers, state issued commodities, and grants to meet the need of those going hungry. During their last fiscal year they had more than 74,000 user visits and distributed 1,080,000 pounds of food. Every dollar and every can donated makes a difference to someone going hungry!

In a review at Music Street Journal, Greg Olma said of the album, “I can still honestly say that there are some really good tunes on this eclectic disc. The styles and genre are all over the board here but I think there are at least a few songs for everybody on this record…Even if at the end of the day you only like a few tunes, this CD is worth checking out because you may discover a new artists that you want to follow more closely and you will be helping out a worthy cause.”

In a review at Music Emissions (musicemissions.com), SolitaryMan described the disc as “a mixed bag of genres, skill levels and ultimately flows incredibly well despite the differences. The predominant genre appears to be gospel-flavored rock, with some fine tracks by the likes of Paul Hieser, Jim Grass and Wade Lammon. The ‘9/11 Dedication’ is a hip-hop tribute to an obvious day of infamy in our country, and is particularly well done. If I had to pin down a favorite or two, Clark Colborn’s prog-rock guitar gymnastics on ‘Mr. In A Hurry (Part 2)’ would be one. Some Kind Of Whale also offer a memorable track with the bluesy rock of ‘Sorry Today’…On top of your charitable donation, you’ll get a collection of songs that will no doubt have at least a couple of tracks to please you regardless of your tastes. Sounds like a win-win to me!”

At Mr. Music Chronicles, Larry Toering said, “…All of the artists bring their own unique sound and style to the table…It can’t be categorized very easily, as they do vary quite vastly…The music here is that of which anyone can enjoy, it’s that well put together for a good cause, set up through Create Space…I find this to be an excellent group of artists and tracks, enjoying every minute of it.”

Colonel Angus had the following to say about the set at Wormwood Chronicles: “…Luckily, this album is packed full of great music by unknown artists. You can look at this record as a sampler but you also get the added benefit of donating to a good cause.. If you purchase this group of cuts, you will be a rewarded twice; once for the music and the other for helping other folks in need.”
