Sydney Australia’s Elstow to Release New EP ‘As The Sun Falls’

Borrowing the name of the Sydney apartment building they were living in, Elstow was born out of an appreciation for the melodic folk stylings of sixties heroes Simon & Garfunkel and The Mamas & The Papas. Initially a duo, Jared Shaw and Chel Browne spent 2012 recording lo-fi demos before taking some time off to travel and absorb wider musical influences.

In 2013 Elstow expanded to incorporate five members. Drawing on the west coast psychedelic sounds of bands such as Jefferson Airplane and Peanut Butter Conspiracy, as well as nineties alt-psych idols Brian Jonestown Massacre and Mazzy Star, Elstow started work on their debut EP.

To be released on September 15th 2014, the result is a five track EP comprised of dreamy psychedelic landscapes fused with a unique folk sensibility. Combining surreal and at times haunting atmospherics with a subtle, personal approach, it’s their own variety of neo-psychedelic-folk pop.

Hailmary Kick Off Round 2 of Their National Navigate the Sunrise Tour

Australian West Coast hard rock outfit Hailmary kick off Round 2 of their National Navigate the Sunrise Tour with dates in Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne this weekend (Thu 31 July – Sat 2 August)

Following an epic 16 date, 6 State Aussie Tour to promote the release of their latest EP “Navigate The Sunrise” in May and June, West Coast hard rock outfit Hailmary kick off Round 2 this weekend with dates in Sydney, Cairns and a return to their second home of Melbourne for Brewtality Festival 2014.

    TOUR DATES:
Thu 31 Jul Frankie’s Pizza By The Slice, Sydney (NSW)
Fri 1 Aug Railway Hotel, Cairns (QLD)
Sat 2 Aug The Tote, Collingwood (VIC)

The latest release, which was recorded at Vasectomy Studio in Perth and co-produced by Hailmary’s drummer Vas Shevtsov and singer/songwriter Kevin Curran in partnership with the internationally renowned Jeff Tomei (Jerry Cantrell, Smashing Pumpkins, Skid Row, Corrosion of Conformity) out of his Cock of The Walk Studio in Atlanta, USA is a 5 track face melter that has been garnering strong reviews across the globe.

“these guys rock and rock damn hard. The songs have a titanic rock groove to them, and the vocals, courtesy Kevin Curran, are delivered with raw passion and power.” – SF MEDIA
“[Hailmary] seems to draw a line in the sand and say ‘enough of the grunge’ by ironically being possibly their best ever translation of that genre. It’s a sound that fans will be instantly familiar with and its execution is sublime.”- The Rockpit
“Hailmary are at a career turning point – it is writ large all over this new EP: that indefinable combination of achievement, appreciation and the confidence to make a leap in achievement.” – 100% Rock Magazine

Hailmary are renowned as one of the hardest working independent bands currently on the Australian airwaves and touring circuit. Constantly emerging from the extreme isolation of the western capital to pay their dues across the rest of the nation, the Hailmary live show is simply slamming rock music coming at you, loud and proud, like a melodic fist to the face.

    ABOUT HAILMARY:

Originating from one of the most isolated cities in the world, West Aussie based hard rock outfit Hailmary, are living proof that raw talent, ambition and a kick ass work ethic can pay off in today’s challenging live music landscape.

Renowned as one the hardest working independent bands currently breaking through, their strong live performance has solidified them as one of Australia’s best emerging heavy/hard rock bands with an ever-increasing army of loyal fans.

With hook driven vocal choruses and a pummelling backline, Hailmary blends elements of dirty ballsy hard rock with sludgy stoner riffs, a grungy bottom end tinged at times with a sexy southern swagger to create a style that is uniquely their own.

In 2014 the momentum will continue to build as Hailmary get set to drop their first release for the year, “Navigate The Sunrise” a 5 track EP due for release on May 16 and prepare to embark on their first Australian Tour.

The “Navigate The Sunrise Australian Tour” is a 16 date, 6 State run of shows which kicks off on Thursday May 28 in Adelaide and finishes up in Bunbury in their home State of WA on Saturday June 29 and includes spots on the Wallapalooza Festival on the Gold Coast (June 8) and at the Rock N Load Festival in Melbourne (June 21).

Navigate The Sunrise was recorded at Vasectomy Studio in the hills of Perth, WA, engineered by Hailmary drummer Vassya Shevstov with co-production by Shevstov, Hailmary singer/songwriter Kevin Curran along term Hailmary collaborator and world renowned Producer, Jeff Tomei (Jerry Cantrell, Smashing Pumpkins, Skid Row) out of his Cock of The Walk Studio in Atlanta, USA, with mastering by Glenn Schick at GSM in Seattle, USA.

The EP features Hailmary Members; Kevin Curran (Vocals / Guitar), Vas Shevstov (Drums / Percussion / Vocals), Todd Fishwick (Guitar / Vocals), and Ben Elphick (Guitar / Vocals).

One of the biggest obstacles Hailmary faced in the Navigate The Sunrise campaign was that, despite searching far and wide, the band was still without a permanent bass player following the departure of Nairn McKay in mid 2013.

Thankfully, 2 of the best 4 stringers around stepped in to fill the void with fellow West Aussie, the uber talented and world class Jon Stockman playing bass on all NTS tracks and Melbourne’s Mick Quee from legendary Australian rockers – Dead City Ruins taking on bass duties for the Tour.

There is no doubting that 2013 was the “game-changer” year for the band following the November 2012 release and relentless touring of their debut Album “Choice Path Consequence Solution” (CPCS) which was recorded over a 2 month period at Tomei’s Studio in the US.

The Album, which followed two previously well credentialed and WAMi Award winning EP’s “Lottery of Life” and “A Million Miles and Days” received strong national and international airplay, (traditional and online) and a stack of solid reviews and media interest particularly throughout the US, Europe and Australia and was the catalyst in Hailmary increasing their profile from that of a “local” Perth band to one with a national and indeed international profile.

Via a successful AMRAP and AirIt application over 60 community radio stations have played songs from the debut Album with a large percentage adding to regular playlists, along with airplay from Andrew Haug on Haug Radio and national commercial airplay on Triple M with Higgo.

The official Film Clip from the Album for the lead track “Yellow Light of Death” was exclusively launched by Heavy Mag on Feb 26, 2014 along with an international digital re-release of a deluxe version of the CPCS Album featuring acoustic renditions of both “Yellow Light of Death” and “Control Freak”. The fact that two of the heaviest songs on the Album translated well into acoustic mode is a testament to the ability of singer/songwriter Kevin Curran.

Since setting foot on the on the iconic Espy Front bar stage in St Kilda at the inaugural Rock N Load Festival in 2012 so many doors have opened for Hailmary and they have grabbed at every opportunity since offered.

By the end of 2013, interest in the live shows from Victorian promoters, bands and fans was such that in 18 months they had racked up over 170,000kms in air travel and completed 8 Victorian tours and 45+ Victorian shows, including Festivals – Rock N Load,
Brew-Tality Fest and Rock the Bay and shared the stage with many of the top emerging Aussie rock metal and alternate acts including The Beards, Electric Mary, Sleep Parade, King of the North, EMPRA, The Deep End, MASSIVE, Gay Paris, My Left Boot, My Dynamite, Palace of the King, Bronson, Witchgrinder and Jericco.

No wonder they are often referred to as the “The Melbourne band that lives in Perth” or that they hail from “Perbourne”.

Hailmary are poised to take it to the next level and their 2014 tour schedule and plans to hit Europe and the UK in 2015 will certainly keep these road warriors racking up frequent flyer points and fans both nationally and internationally.

Naylor’s Notes – St. Louis, MO. – Blues Man: Buffalo Bob

All across the U.S. Buffalo Bob has been on the road with bands for 25 years.  Out of all the cities he played at over time, he decided to make St. Louis, MO his home base.  Music has been his life time career since leaving the army in 1969.  Having had a couple of in-between jobs from hard American labor, to an emergency medical technician, Buffalo Bob has mainly participated in the music industry.  From rock bands, to show bands, to the good ole’ Blues.

Buffalo Bob has opened up for legendary acts such as;  Steppen Wolf, Night Ranger, Atlanta Rhythm Section, The Guess who, Freddie King, John Lee Hooker, Anson Funderburg & The Rockets, Bugs Henderson, Son Seals, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, Kansas, Black Oak Arkansas, Spencer Davis Group, Lonnie Mack, Buckwheat, Zydeco, & many more.

He has backed up, and shared the stage with artist’s such as;  BO Diddley, Chuck Berry, Johnnie Johnson, Ronnie & The Daytona’s, The Coasters., etc.,

You can find Buffalo Bob entertaining in St. Louis, MO.  At The Backstreet Jazz & Blues Night Club at the West-port Plaza.  This is every Sunday night from 9 – 11:30, which is the longest running open jam session in St. Louis, MO.

Buffalo Bob is a legend in his own way as you’ve read above on who he has run with in the industry.  He has settled down a bit these days, and now let’s the youngster’s sit in on Sunday night’s.  Some have started sitting in at his jam at as young as 15 years old.  The most of them are now grown and their musicianship has vastly improved.  Some of them are pro’s now, and other’s do it as just a hobby, it’s always fun at the Sunday night jam sessions.

Billy Gibbons of ZZ-Top, & Sammy Hagar, once dropped by to jam with him.  That’s when he realized the word is out among the big names about The Backstreet Blues & Jazz Club Jam sessions.  Hence the slogan, “It’s where the stars go to jam.”

With all the many of artist’s that he has backed up, and shared the stage with just one story strikes his memory that he says he will never forget.  & I quote.

“I got a gig backing up an Elvis impersonator in Houston Texas, and backed up, The Coasters.”  The Coasters, are a group from the 50’s that had several hit records such as Charlie Brown, Young Blood, Poison Ivy, etc., etc.,  “I was asked to back up Chuck Berry, while I was there and of course jumped at the chance of it.”  He continues on, “I already knew Chuck’s Bass Player.”  “There were no rehearsals of these shows, you just showed up and played them.”

“I had charts for the Coaster shows,” says Bob.  He used the charts the first show, but after that  he continued on while playing by ear.  According to Buffalo Bob, It wasn’t difficult music.

He knew all of Chuck Berry’s tunes already by ear.  This was because he learned how to play guitar by playing back old Chuck Berry records.  “Of course I had no idea he would change the key from his original recordings.” He states.  “I learned real fast, and on the fly so to speak.”

“On the very first show, as he got to do 4 shows in 4 days with Chuck, there he was standing in the wings behind the curtains with Chuck’s Base player, Jim Marsala.  Before the stage lights came up, in the dark Bob says that Jim told him. “I’ll signal you on what key we are going into.”

As Bob had no previous rehearsals with the band, Jim was going to be way over on the opposite side of the stage from him.  He quickly pointed his finger down.  So what does Bob Do?  He says, “The Key of D, as in down.”  Then Jim says, “No the key of G for Ground.”  That got Buffalo Bob cussing a bit in his head.  Here he thought he was already shut down.  Keep in mind they were still in the wings.

The crowd was getting anxious as was Buffalo Bob, and then Jim turned to him and said, “Now Bobby, we just left California, and some local hot-shot guitar player was in the backup band, and he kept noodling around playing single string stuff behind Chuck.” Bob says Jim pauses and continues with, “Don’t do that!”  “Chuck kicked him off the stage in front of 20,000 people.”

Bob says, “Don’t worry, I know what to do.” Don’t let him fool you though he stresses that he was severely nervous thinking, “Please lord don’t let me get kicked off the stage by Chuck Berry.”   There would have perhaps not have been a Buffalo Bob if that would have happened.

Then from behind the curtains an overhead intercom sounded off saying, “Take the stage please.”  Out they went without hesitation.

The crowd cheering, the band in place, and Bob nervous as could be, there was still no Chuck.  Buffalo Bob says he was apprehensive about him even showing up.  Then standing there in the darkened stage in front of 5,000 people he started thinking, “My God is he even going to show?” Then Bam! There he was.  Out comes Chuck.  “The lights went up, and bam, we were off to the races.”  Says Bob.

“I behaved myself,” says Bob.  He played bar chords on those Chuck songs until he got cramps in his hand.  “I guess I didn’t get in Chucks way, he was kind to me while we were playing his signature, Johnny B. Goode. “  Bob says, “On this last show in Houston, he kind of bounced back towards me and leaned over to me & said, ““Go ahead.”  “I was startled as I didn’t know what he wanted me to do.”  “Then he gestured towards the front of the stage with his guitar, and said again,” “Go ahead.”  Bob hesitates for just a second as he thinks back to recollect this wonderful memory, and says. “All of a sudden I just shot out as if possessed.”  “I started to duck walk across the stage while playing my best Johnny b. Goode solo.”  “The crowd went nuts,” says Bob.  “Then I shot back to Chuck after 12 bars, and he said.” “ Do it again, Do it again.”

“I ducked walked across the big stage again , and with the crowd of 5,000, they stood up and cheered for the little guy.”  “The common man got to shine,” says Buffalo Bob.  “I settled back to my stage position, and Chuck gave me a wink as he went back to the front of the stage.”

Buffalo Bob was elated, as he grew up learning his music as a teen.  “I saw him in Denver Colorado way before, and I was just one in the crowd among 1,000’s.” He says, “Here, now a couple of decades later here I am backing him up in front of 5,000, and he let me do the duck walk, not once, but twice!”  “Wow!”

“So after my big moment, and the crowd is still cheering, I thought I was in Rock n Roll Heaven,”  Says Bob.  They were still vamping out on the same song, and then Chuck stands in front of the mic, and waited.  The bass player Jim signaled the band to bring it down and Bob watched Chuck to see what he was going to do.  “After all, I just got a standing ovation,” said Bob.  Chuck then said to the crowd, “Well somebody’s going to have to keep rocking when I’m gone.”  The crowd went nuts and Bob says, “I felt flattered, and odd all at the same time.”  Then when the crowd calmed down again, he finished his sentence with, “But it’s going to be a long time before they do.”  The crowd went crazy, Chuck went into a solo, and duck walked across the stage like no one else in the world could do.  “I knew right then what a master showman was, it was Chuck Berry,” said Bob.

“He threw me the ball, let me dribble it across the court, and then took the ball back to score.”  “I will never forget that show, it was an honor, and a lesson,” said Buffalo Bob.  In my book he is one of the most passionate original guitar players out there.  He can walk onto a set with you and already know what he’s doing.  Can’t get much more original than that.

Buffalo Bob & Johnnie Johnson (chuck berry’s original piano player)

Thanks for re-living this memory with Buffalo Bob, and if your ever in St. Louis, Mo.

Please make it to a show at Backstreet Jazz & Blues club. With Buffalo Bob as your entertaining host.

Once again this has been Naylor’s Notes.

Daily Dose: Zeb vs Zeus – Out of Wax

Tragically, most bands containing multiple family members end with sibling rivalry. Zeb vs Zeus started with one…

Zeb vs Zeus is a “fictional” band that plays “real” music.

On the “Fictional” side, the band is made of of Zeb, Zeus and Teeb, three brothers with some odd quirks and a pet monkey with an imaginary personality. The bands creation and exploits are documented on Youtube.

On the “Real” side, the band is made up of Mark, John and Adam O’Connor, real life brothers with all the sibling rivalries that that entails. Based in Ireland, the idea to make music competitively came up in Summer 2013 and with the help of our Quirky director, Jubs Haylin, Zeb vs Zeus was born.

Porter Ray: Listen to Fundamentals Mixtape Now

Porter Ray has earned praise from outlets in Seattle for his three self-released efforts — BLK GLD LP (May 2013); WHT GLD and RSE GLD EP’s (October 2013) — and his live performances. The prolific and ascendant MC caught the attention of Ishmael Butler, Shabazz Palaces founder and member of Sub Pop’s A&R team, who brought Ray to the label.

On a related note, Porter Ray will support labelmates Shabazz Palaces tonight, Friday, August 1st with a hometown show at Neumos.

What people have said about Porter Ray:

A son of Seattle’s Central District, Porter Ray namechecks [Ishmael] Butler and revered Seattle MC Infinite as influences. Appropriately, “5950’s” is 206 from head to toe; named for a model of New Era baseball cap, it’s described as sporting Mariner teal throughout Porter’s stunning debut, BLK GLD. Here, Porter reels off the minutiae of murder, betrayal and narcotic sales with a poetic eye that recalls vintage Nas, tempered with a numb, gray-sky detachment (and aided by a sterling verse from Nate Jack) all over shimmering piano keys, a subdued drum shuffle and quiet-storm rain effects. In this city — built on, around, and seemingly under water — it’s even easier than you’d think to get washed, depending on where you’re standing.” [“5950’s” / Heavy Rotation] – NPR

Porter’s debut album, BLK GLD, came out last spring, and it is one of the must-downloads of Seattle rap music in 2013. It’s an online song bundle that holds together as a complete musical thought, beats working with the rhymes, to showcase Porter’s sparkling voice—a light, slangy, and relaxed instrument he should be thanking the stars he doesn’t have to go to the trouble of putting on. He has a gift. In conversation, it’s the same voice. That’s just the way Porter sounds. The highlight of BLK GLD is “Blackberry Kush,” a song that’s trippy and rainy like Seattle, and deep and compassionate like Porter.” – The Stranger

His firmly structured flow is more vehicle than destination, its strong, consistent template allowing space for narrative detail. Production, handled by a committee of seven beatmakers, plays the billowy background, propped on lush, emotive soul samples.” [RSE GLD / Album of the Month] – City Arts

What people are saying about Lese Majesty:
After countless hours spent driving around bumping the new record, we’d agree with those that heard it for the first time dodging lasers that Lese Majesty is the future of hip-hop, if we thought that anyone else was capable of doing something this revelatory.” [Lese Majesty] – Gorilla Vs. Bear

These aren’t condescending “Real Hip-Hop” platitudes: this is a call to arms for hip-hop’s creative fringe to snatch the reins from a power structure more interested in self-preservation than the advancement of the culture. The soul of Shabazz Palaces is pairing next-gen sounds with classic brass-tacks show-and-prove emceeing, and Lese Majesty tugs those extremes as far as they’ve ever been pulled; that it never shows signs of wear speaks to the strength of the bond.” [Review, 8.2/ 10] – Pitchfork

Shabazz Palaces have made the best album of the year…not so much a mysterious transmission from some unknown point in deep space, but more like echoes from the future ghost of our planet. Earth used to be here, where the music is, but now it’s gone. Planets can become extinct, but raps can live on, disembodied and numinous.” [Review] – The Stranger

The lovely sense that you’re listening to an album genuinely unlike any other is pretty overwhelming.” [Review, 4/5 ] – The Guardian

The Sub Pop duo cement their place as the most forward thinking act in hip-hop” [Review, 9/10] – The Line Of Best Fit

Lazarro actually uses extraterrestrial language in his already cryptic lyrics, which, combined with production that recalls the rap-informed loops of Flying Lotus or even the Floyd-isms of Nicolas Jaar’s Darkside project, creates an endless-seeming atmosphere of synth trickles, distant drums, sinkhole vocals, and various stereophonic blip-bleep-bloops. Call it planetarium rap.” [Review, B+] – Consequence of Sound

A zero gravity dreamworld with a galaxy of beats.” [Review, 8/10] – Drowned in Sound

Raw, graceful tunes…”Dawn in Luxor” opens the 45-minute document with a line about “throwing cocktails at the Führer,” and the album’s title comes from the French phrase for sacrilege against royalty. The sentiment can be interpreted in several ways, with Butler lyrically protecting what’s precious to him — blackness, hip-hop, eccentricity — and going hard at oppressors… As melodic as much of Lese Majesty is, the words might be the album’s most important element. Close listeners will find brilliant inventions and plenty of quotable passages.” [First Listen] – NPR Music

Shabazz Palaces are often as mystifying as they are mind-bending, but they’re in a class all their own.” [Review, A-] – Pretty Much Amazing

The group’s 2011 breakthrough, Black Up, thrilled and flummoxed critics with elements of Phillip Glass minimalism, Brian Eno ambience, and George Clinton cosmic weirdness. On the new follow-up, Lese Majesty, the sonic bushwhacking appears destined to continue.” – All Things Considered

…The laudable legacy of the past lays the groundwork for endless possibilities in the future, and Lese Majesty stands as the best application of those ideas within a unique musical ecosystem since Sun Ra. Monolithic and magical, the album exists in a fantastical space just outside the genre’s usual perimeter, keeping its references odder and more compelling, crafting an inimitably consistent musical experience.” [Review, 4.5/5] – Slant Magazine

You could happily waste days trying to categorize the music Ishmael Butler and Tendai Maraire make, but you’d be better advised just to go with their mysterious flow.” – The Sunday Times

An agreeably spacey and expansive trip” [Review, 4/5] – The Daily Mirror

It’s a grander, more ambitious record than their debut – made in the group’s new studio, they “had the time and space to realise much more than we have before”. But it’s also a record that never spirals into pure indulgence: put simply, just like countless hip-hop classics before it, it knows that all the experimentation in the world doesn’t mean shit if the beats don’t bump and the rhymes don’t hit. Lese Majesty is rooted in tradition without ever feeling trad, and perhaps that, more than anything, is what makes it succeed.” [Album premiere] – FACT

Hip-hop is constantly being tweaked and nudged in new directions, but rarely is it reconfigured as radically, and thrillingly, as on this second album from Shabazz Palaces.” [Review, 5/5] – The Observer

Few words can do justice in paying tribute to a record that is one of 2014’s only true greats.” – Loud & Quiet

Shabazz Palaces offer an ethereal conglomerate with a prophetic voice, a gutsy move that’s more than paid off here.” [Review, 8/10] – Exclaim

It’s a much quieter album than its predecessor, more interested in fingering the tears and rips in its luxurious, ambient textures than Black Up’s intergalactic boom-bap. It pulses and shimmers like light bouncing off gold, burnishing Palaceer’s radiant visions.” [Review] – The Wire

If you’re after blunted beats and wordplay that reaffirms your belief in rap as urban folk music, then you’re in for a shock. But for anyone looking for a mind-expanding trip to the outer edges of the solar system, these rap futurists are your guides.” [Review, 8/10] – CLASH

Shabazz Palaces operate without paying much attention to any expectations of what a hip-hop record should be; as a result, this is without a doubt the greatest thing to happen within the genre all year, and likely to stay that way. It’s hard to disagree with the sentiment that Lese Majesty is the future of hip-hop, for that very reason.” [Album of the Week] – Treble

Formed at the beginning of 2013, with influences from Alternative Rock bands such as Biffy Clyro, Muse, 30 Seconds to Mars and Placebo to the extremes of Industrial legends Nine Inch Nails, to the niche Post Rock bands such as 65daysofstatic and This Will Destroy You, Peur’s broad music taste allowed them to write music with complexity and also mainstream appeal that outshone other bands their age.

Hour 24 Releases Live Music Video for “Take Me Away”

Female-fronted rock band Hour 24 is pleased to release a live music video for their newest single “Take Me Away.” The band recently released the single “Take Me Away” on iTunes while fans eagerly await the release of their debut full-length album. The band will start work on the new album with Dan Korneff (Motionless In White, Crown The Empire, Pierce The Veil) before heading on tour this September. More details will be released at a later date for both.

    About Hour 24:
In a world of many blasé female-fronted bands, Hour 24 rises above the ranks and shows that they’re not just another pretty face. With fast guitar solos and heavy music, “the band ventures into territory most of the major label girl-led bands haven’t dared to touch” (ToledoMusicScene.com). Since their formation in 2011, Hour 24 has established themselves as a solid act, having opened for national acts in the ranks of Falling in Reverse, Chiodos, The Misfits, My Darkest Days, and having touring the United States multiple times.

First Listen: Kosoti – “Bark and Sticks”

After a near death experience in 2013, lead singer and songwriter Allan Hyslop realised he needed to treasure every moment of his life by doing what he loved most, writing and performing music.

Allan explains “Kosoti is the result of a few musicians and friends getting together to write songs and enjoy each other’s company. It started about eight months ago when a change in personnel gave us the impetus to try something different from what we’d previously been doing. The sound emerged and we knew there was something special being born…

Our new single ‘Bark and Sticks’ is about our home city of Newcastle, how it inspires me and how, through thick and thin, it has always been the backdrop to my story – and will hopefully will continue to be for a long time to come!”

The track was produced by the hugely talented Adrian Hall who has previously worked with The Clash, Depech Mode, Alicia Keys, Robbie Williams and Anna Calvi.

‘Bark and Sticks’ boasts the beautiful vocal harmonies that are quickly becoming Kosoti’s trademark, with an infectious up-tempo melody that will no doubt draw comparisons to The Magic Numbers and Damien Rice.

Having already performed sessions for BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and Metro Radio in their short career, ‘Bark and Sticks’ is eagerly awaited by fans and media outlets alike.

First Listen: Hollie April – “Together Alone”

Born and raised in Gibraltar, Hollie April is a twenty-two year-old British singer-songwriter who has been writing and performing music professionally from a very young age. During her years as an undergraduate at Leeds College of Music, she represented the conservatoire at showcases for Sony, Island Records and Steinway before making her way onto the UK festival circuit, opening the main stage for the Gibraltar Music Festival and appearing at Gibraltar International Jazz Festival, the Steinway Hall London, GBC TV and BBC TV West Yorkshire.

Hollie April’s debut EP ‘Marionette’ has received airplay around the world, with her track ‘The Sun and the Sea’ being singled out for particularly high praise. The song was officially endorsed by SoundCloud, who say “Hollie has an astonishing voice. It is clear and direct. She hits notes dead on and effortlessly glides across octaves. Accompanying herself with only an acoustic guitar seems fitting. It puts the focus on her singular voice, providing just enough of an anchor to get a sense of chord progression beneath the melody.”

Hollie April’s new single ‘Together Alone’ is released on 22nd September. At times delicate and vulnerable, the song builds to a powerful crescendo that perfectly compliments the huge range and variation of tone in Hollie’s voice. Her brand of alt-folk is set to bring her music to an even wider and hugely appreciative audience.

Dum Dum Girls Announce Fall North American Tour in Support “Too True”

Dum Dum Girls have scheduled a North American fall tour in support of Too True, their critically acclaimed 3rd album on Sub Pop. The tour begins October 19th in Denver, CO at Larimer Lounge and ends November 15th in Pioneertown, CA at Pappy & Harriets, Preceding the tour, Dum Dum Girls have scheduled a few festival appearances including Saturday August 2nd in Santa Ana, CA at the Observatory for Burger A-Go-Go, August 9th in San Francisco, CA at Outside Lands, and September 20th in Denver, CO at Riot Fest. Please find a complete list of tour dates below.

Dum Dum Girls Too True is available now on CD/LP/DL from Sub Pop. The album lead by the singles & videos for “Lost Boys And Girls Club,” “Too True To Be Good,” “Are You Okay,” and “Under The Hands, was produced by Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go’s, Richard Hell), Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) and engineered by Alonzo Vargas at East West Studios in Los Angeles and The Coven in New York City.

What people are saying about Too True:
Dum Dum Girls continue to explore a sonic and formal intersection of the early 1960s — girl groups, surf-rock, garage-rock — and the post-punk 1980s of the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. A few chords, a clear melody and succinct verse-chorus-bridge structures are filled with darkly allusive lyrics and floated amid gauzy, sweeping guitar effects. It’s a roomy concept, encompassing spaghetti western guitar touches in “Cult of Love,” new wave momentum in “Little Minx,” stately folk-rock in “Under These Hands,” a weighty undertow in “Lost Boys and Girls Club” and a celestial serenity in “Trouble Is My Name.” – [Critics Choice] New York Times

“Penny’s songs are no less quotable for their simplicity, whether she’s name-checking 19th-century poet Arthur Rimbaud (“Rimbaud Eyes”), fitting the album’s title into the chorus of “Too True to Be Good” or dispensing a perfect goth-pop mission statement in “Evil Blooms”: “Why be good? Be beautiful and sad.” On Too True, Penny and Dum Dum Girls need barely 30 minutes to prove that a band can be all three at once.” [First Listen] – NPR Music

“.. This album is the perfect-pop balance of cliché and rawness, with mythic ambition and songs that make you a three-minute hero.” [4 / 5 Stars] – MOJO

“Sleek and sophisticated, this third full-length careens from muscular blasts of ’80s guitar rock (“In the Wake of You”) to spectral ballads (“Are You Okay?”). Penny writes hits even if they never become that. Songs like “Too True to Be Good” and “Rimbaud Eyes” are meant to be blared from car radios with the windows down; they’re perfect. – Boston Globe

“Songs like “Rimbaud Eyes” and “Evil Blooms” more than live up to their fashion-goth titles. But Penny is best opening up her sound on big, searching ballads like “Lost Boys and Girls Club,” where sad Madonna hangs with the Jesus and Mary Chain, or the Chrissie Hynde-worthy weeper “Are You Okay?” where Penny wanders in a “lavender haze” (“I’m reckless at night/I’m sorry for days”), wearing boozy misery like a black-leather security blanket.” [3.5/5 Stars] – Rolling Stone
“Too True is a bold album, with Dee Dee backed by huge swelling guitars on a series of resoundingly anthemic and unashamedly 80s sounding tracks.” [8 / 10] – Uncut

Daily Dose: Odyssey, Inc – Addicted to You

We are Odyssey, Inc., an alternative rock band based out of Loris, SC. By channeling the influence of great groups long past, our goal is to create original music others will enjoy, that simultaneously buoys the current standards of the industry.

The band was formed in January, 2012 at Coastal Carolina University by Jordan Small, and Brandon Kirsch. Both computer science majors, they realized they were on the wrong path when they spent all spare time composing songs in the dorm room. The next year was spent mostly honing the craft and generating more material. Eventually, they met Matt Skipper while all three were employed by Papa John’s Pizza. Coincidentally, Matt had also attended Coastal, though his focus was on guitar.

This became highly evident when they heard his playing, and he was invited to join the group. The band then focused on creating rough demos, utilizing the iPhone GarageBand app to its fullest potential. Flash forward to the beginning of Summer 2014. After compiling a demo tape of several songs, the band began to look for recording studios to take things to the next level. A quick Google search later, they found themselves at Southwood Recording Studio, owned by Mitch Todd of Nashville fame. After hearing the tape, he was convinced that the tunes he was hearing were of high quality, and had a new sound.

This attracted the attention of local drummer and North Myrtle Beach Police officer Mike Boyd, an associate of Mitch’s. Due to a previous brush with fame, Mike saw that the band had the needed qualities to succeed. The current lineup was achieved. Since then, the band has been diligently hitting the studio, focusing all effort on producing the greatest songs possible. The included attachments are our first two releases, “Addicted to You” and “They’re Wrong.” We’d like to think the music speaks for itself. We have several more in progress, just not mastered.

The Guardian, who premiered the track, had this to say about the release, “The godfather of grunge did the unthinkable in 2011 by swapping his trademark distortion and fuzz for the gentle strums of an acoustic guitar. A few years after the release of Several Shades of Why, and J Mascis is still favouring the more mellow approach to songcraft with his new album, Tied to a Star, out in August.” (see premiere July 29th).

Embracer Enters Studio with Matt Malpass Beginning Friday

Imminence Records are pleased to announce that they have signed West Virginian indie rock/post-hardcore outfit Embracer. From their conception as a hardcore band and through numerous lineup, members’ role, and stylistic changes; Embracer has matured and developed drastically to what they are now. They now encompass a broad range of stylistic influences from Circa Survive and Balance and Composure to Johnny Cash and Miles Davis.Guitarist Ryan Pullin had this to say on the signing, “We are very excited to announce our signing with Imminence Records because we feel that our creativity will not be limited by any expectations set by our label. Having support from a label like Imminence Records will allow us to continue to grow, and allow us to continue to pursue our passions for making and performing music.”

The band will be in Atlanta starting Friday to begin work on their label debut. The record will be recorded by Matt Malpass who has worked with such artists as Dance Gavin Dance, Hey Monday, Relient K, and Manchester Orchestra. Embracer takes an open-minded approach to their music, refusing to let boundaries set by genres or expectations to limit what takes part in the songwriting process with Ryan Pullin commenting, “We believe that music can be a therapy, a crutch, an ecstasy, or an escape for people. It’s one thing to be able to live a passion and do what you want for yourself, but knowing that we will be encouraged to continue to create music that will reach out to our audiences makes it truly worth it.”

    About Embracer:
Embracer is an indie rock/post-hardcore focused in Charleston, WV. From their conception as a hardcore band and through numerous lineup, members’ role, and stylistic changes, Embracer has matured and developed drastically to what they are now. Embracer has incorporated a vastly broader range of stylistic influences from modern rock bands like Circa Survive, Polyneso, Balance and Composure, and This Will Destroy You to even older, much different stylistic influences such as Johnny Cash and Miles Davis. Embracer takes an open-minded approach to their music, refusing to let boundaries set by genres or expectations to limit what takes part in the songwriting process.

In the December of 2010, Embracer formed in Hurricane, WV under the name of “World Famous.” When Zak Rea, the lead songwriter, left and whose place was taken by Jordan Bradley, the style of influence began to change dramatically as more outside influences from the other band members began to flow into the song writing process, though the melodic hardcore style stayed, although for not much longer. In August of 2011, World Famous changed its name to Embracer along with the release of the Dreamers EP, a six-track melodic hardcore EP recorded, mixed, and mastered by Brette Ciamarra of 344 Studios.

Embracer has faced numerous line-up changes since 2011 and a complete overhaul on not only the style but structure of the songwriting process. From founding members departing to lead roles changing, there has been much growth in multiple directions. With a struggling to virtually non-existent modern and developing music scene in the Charleston, WV area, Embracer has had to remain extremely persistent over the past four years to grow. With the upcoming recording of Embracer’s debut album My Father’s Will with the renowned Matt Malpass, this album could potentially be a cornerstone for the forward progress of Embracer.

Daily Dose: Ted Z and the Wranglers – Afraid of Dying

    tedzwranglers

Ted Z and the Wranglers, of Southern California, deliver heartfelt ballads and gritty grassroots rock ‘n’ roll with a cowboy kick. Their folky story-telling songs convey themes of love, politics, environmentalism, childhood imagination, and the rawness of humanity.

The concept of the band came to Ali “Ted” Zakka (lead singer, guitarist, former bassist of Handsome G) in a burst of songwriting during a break from his old band. Ali called upon old friends Mike Layton (guitar, harmonica) and Professor Dan Mages (bass), and enlisted Mike Myers (drums, harmony vocals) to complete the new group. Layton now shares lead guitar duties for The Wranglers with the multi-talented musician and music teacher Rob Torres and the newest addition, Guitar Center blues competition titleholder Jackson Leverone.

Together, these players meld Southwestern romanticism, cultural awareness, and rollicking good times to get audiences dancing and leave them hungry for more.

Rock/Punk Party-Starters Drawcard announced their tour and unleashed their new single KIDS last month, and now on the verge of heading out on tour down the East Coast of Australia, they have released the filmclip for the belting track.

The clip is high-energy and up-in-your-face showcases the band’s stage presence, a take-no-prisoners show that doesn’t let up until the last chord is struck, filmed in their rehearsal room and put together by the band and Thomas Coutts.

On the eve of their tour kicking off, Drawcard has been enjoying love from all over – triple j’s Home and Hosed and Short Fast Loud, as well as Triple M’s Homegrown show and being added to US radio station rotation on New Driven Radio and the Oz tour has been touted by Tone Deaf as 1 of 5 Do Not Miss Tours in August.

Drawcard are all about the following: Tasty melodies, killer riffs, catchy choruses and thought provoking lyrics. This means that there are often crazy gyrating bodies on the dancefloor and being thrown across the stage. To sum up – all members in Drawcard have Bachelor’s Degrees in “Tumultuous Partying” and a sheer knack for writing catchy melody laden post punk rock anthems.

‘Kids’ is a cracking song about wishing for simpler times “when we were kids.” It’s an upbeat, nostalgic track that doesn’t let up until the final chord has been struck. Drawcard’s frontman, Paul Durkin’s vocal hook anchors the chorus of the track and defies anyone to get it out of their head.

The tour takes themfrom their Hometown of Maroochydore, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Bendigo.

Proving that they have what it takes time and time again, they have shared the stage with the likes of Taking Back Sunday, Unwritten Law, Grinspoon, Guttermouth, Birds of Tokyo, Parkway Drive, Dead Letter Circus, Dallas Frasca, Closure in Moscow and the list goes on! Two singles off their sophomore 5 track EP debuted at No.4 and No.5 in the AMRAP Australian Independent Music Charts and remained in the Top 10 for 3 weeks alongside artists including Children Collide, The Temper Trap and Hilltop Hoods PLUS their debut album was mixed by Sylvia Massy (TOOL, Red Hot Chili Peppers, COG) in California and is distributed nationally in the U.S. and Canada with SONY Red.

Teenage Wildlife – The Last Great Love Affair

Although John Wright has been making music “forever”, it was through his career in filmmaking and photography, regularly working with world famous musicians, that he received the encouragement he needed to launch his own project: TEENAGE WILDLIFE.

Based in Shoreditch and citing influences such as Van Morrison and Curtis Mayfield, John is a multi-instrumentalist who plays and records drums, bass, guitar and keys. Merging these traditional sounds with ideas sketched on mobile devices and blending samples to create shimmering sonic backdrops across an impressive range of genres, John’s back catalogue boasts impressive examples of hip hop, dance and melodic dub. All his material is recorded in his attic studio where he produces and masters his own work, gathering fans through social networking.

Although John has created tracks that have appeared on fashion films for Fendi and Dior as well as working photographically with Louis Vuitton, Dior, GQ, Vanity Fair and Sony Music, it’s his background that remains a driving force. “I had a pretty rough upbringing” he explains. “I think the term is ‘underprivileged’. I designed Teenage Wildlife as a vehicle to express myself musically and to use funds I raise through it to support charities that help underprivileged young people.”

Teenage Wildlife’s ‘The Last Great Love Affair’ and AA side ‘Most Beautiful Thing’ are released on Monday September 1st.

Check out a sneak preview of “The Last Great Love Affair”:

Buffalo Bob, among many other well-known artist’s has opened for Sam Myers, and Anson Funderburgh, numerous times at many St. Louis, MO., Concert Venues, and says, ” Man I always had a great time with old Sam Myers.”  And I quote, “He tip toed across the stage because he was blind as a bat.”  “Sometimes he would bite the microphone before he found his hot spot on the stage.”

This didn’t happen very often but his power behind the microphone would surely make up for it. No Devotion to the Past: A New Beginning

Lee Gaze has made it official in a statement he made to NME about the music of his former band, Lostprophets. ” We’d definitely never play the songs again… I don’t think we’d ever revisit anything.” And that very much appears to be the case as of this writing. Please welcome to the stage No Devotion. From what it looks like, the band have no intention of revisiting the past whatsoever. Having regrouped after taking a couple of years out of the spotlight, the former members of Lostprophets merged with current United Nations and former Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly to for No Devotion. Having signed to Rickly’s own label, Collection Records, the band put out a single, “Stay”, on July 1st.

    Ian Watkins
    Former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins.

Considering that less than a year ago the five remaining members of Lostprophets all considered getting out of the music business entirely, this could not only be considered a comeback, but a triumphant return to form. Considering all of the vile things Ian Watkins, former lead singer of Lostprophets who failed at his appeal for Child Molestation charges two days ago after pleading to multiple counts pf sexual assault against children and other charges involving taking and possessing sexual images of minors, some as young as a year old, had done and dragging the Lostprophets name through the mud and, to an extent, the other members reputations as well, this could not be a better time to reinvent themselves. And this is more than a mere reinvention. Take a listen to their first single below and you will see that they sound nothing like their former selves. This is an entirely new band.

No Devotion has just wrapped up a 4 date tour around the United Kingdom. The band’s first live performances received positive reviews from critics and fans despite revealed that they would not be playing any music from the Lostprophets discography.

No Devotion will enter the studio later this year with a full album to be released some time in 2015.
