Daily Dose: Magnastic – Drank In The Mornin’

    1966106_10151897861726496_453720381_o

Ukulele, hip hop, and guitar shredding mix well together… and along comes the evolved beats of Magnastic. These guys truly possess their own sound, combining a humorous element to their incredible playing skills.

Influences like Tenacious D, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck, Dr. Dre, Busta Ryhmes, Primus, friends and lovers, have all had a hand in their sound. Now they have reached a level of music that is at the point of de-labelization.

The band formed in high school but had a rough start, as the original five members parted ways after a period of individual hardships occurred (Rehab). Jeff and Byron were able to reconvene after a few years to formulate their musical ideas and talents into what they wanted to be, “perfect for us and our friends, something people all over can give a listen to. Kind of like a sort of underground musical ceremony.”

Soon they were joined by the amazing rhythm section of Matt Barreca (drums) and Matt Shlapak (bass and keys). With the addition of the ‘2 Mathew’s with nothing to lose’ they set out on recording their debut album “Pontiac Man” in March 2013.

Magnastic’s live show is driven purely on ‘Entertainment’ and is an experience unlike any other. Expect a set dripping with dirty dancing, ridiculous solos, cardboard cutouts, porn raffles, and more.

L.A. Artist Melo Kan Releases Soulful “Bluez Man”

Melo KAN, LA’s own guitar-toting lyricist most popular for his “You Don’t Like” collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, drops a thought provoking new single titled “Bluez Man.” The soulful record is a thrilling precursor of what fans can expect from his upcoming EP “The Melo KAN Lounge,” to be released soon. Melo KAN, who packs each song with a meaningful message, addresses the internal struggle of an artist on a mission to stay true to his calling despite the industry hype, over a blues-infused melodic beat produced by Keyz Da Don.

“I’ve never heard of a blues artist having to do anything but sing the blues – that’s what they did. There was nothing they had to compromise; they didn’t care about blowing up. It was just pure,” says Melo. “That’s how I felt when doing the ‘Bluez Man;’ hate it or love it, this is my perspective and this is what I’m feeling. Coming from a pure space and not thinking about what the industry wants and to have people actually liking it.”

Melo’s upcoming “The Melo KAN Lounge” EP is a highly anticipated follow-up to his last body of work titled “Mama’s Only Sun ” released in 2012. The project spawned the colorful video for the 1500 or ‘Nothin produced single “A’Niyah’s Song” featuring T-Tru. While working on his new EP in the studio, Melo KAN currently gives his fans an intimate poetry and music experience with a live band every Monday night at 11pm (PST) via U-Stream with his#MeloMonday series.

“That live sound is undeniable and when you put the content behind it, you’ve got the makings of something that’s going to definitely be eternal. My fans can expect the same depth as far as content: social, communal, and worldwide concerns. I want to marry the music, the hook, and the lyrics all into something that can be felt,” Melo explains.

20 Years On, Washington DC musicians Release “LaPeña”

After more than 20 years of making music, Mike Meier (acoustic guitar) and Rosalinda Bird (flutes) finally released a music CD. They performed throughout the 1990s in the Washington DC area as LaPeña. Their music CD is now available.

The CD liner notes explain the background: This CD came into being in the spur of the moment. Rosalinda and I performed in the Washington, D.C. area in the 1990s under the name “LaPeña.” “In 1993, we recorded and released music on cassette tape (yes, that was still common in those days). In the ensuing years, we never got around to recording more, something always got in the way. The years passed. Then Rosalinda received notice that she only had a few weeks to live. I was with her at that appointment, and took her to a restaurant thereafter so that we could talk. As the waitress rattled down the special “low fat” and “healthy” choices on the menu,” Rosalinda said “thank you, but that health food thing hasn’t really worked for me.” As soon as I got home, I called the recording studio and reserved two days. So, with very little preparation and forethought, we walked in and recorded what became this CD. It may not have captured Rosalinda at her best, but it sure captured her spirit.

The CD is for sale at CD Baby and http://mikemeier.kicktone.com/mpxwk/lapena.

In real life, Mike Meier is a lawyer for an international aviation services company. The website for the newly released CD is www.mikemeiermusic.com.

Composer Frank Arnold releases new single ‘World In Between’

The composer and producer of electronic music known as Frank Arnold has released his latest official single, “World In Between.” It has been published on the Galileo Dreams Recordings independent music label and is available at iTunes, Beatport, and everywhere good digital music is sold. Mellow, spacious, and populated with several undeniable melodic phrases, “World In Between” is a reminder of just how good modern electronic music can be.

German-born Berliner Frank Arnold cites as main artistic influences Enigma and Jean-Michel Jarre. He has also been quoted as preferring music by such composers as Astrix, Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom, Schiller, Above & Beyond, Kaskade, and ATB. Arnold’s own music is often much more subdued than what is expected of the EDM genre, however. Billed on iTunes as electronic, ambient, and lounge music, Arnold’s “World In Between” is perhaps best considered an example of what fans of electronic dance music often refer to as “chillout” music.

Frank Arnold has been playing music since the age of nine, at which age he discovered an accordion in his parents’ flat. He took accordion lessons for many years before hearing Jean-Michel Jarre’s seminal album, “Oxygen IV” on the radio. (Jarre has been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records four times for performing the largest concert ever; 3.5 million people attended his show in Moscow). After being inspired by Jarre, Arnold dedicated himself to the practice and production of electronic music.

Arnold began to focus on sound design and synthesis in the early ’90s, producing several demo tapes which were ignored by record companies in that highly competitive and elitist era of professional music. He left off music production for software development until 2004, when he was exposed to Chicane, Enigma, and the talented trance artists of Israel’s digital music underground. Since that time, Frank Arnold has been sculpting his own music style, which he considers to be an amalgam of ambient, trance, and pop music.

“World In Between” by Frank Arnold is available online worldwide. Get in early.

First Listen: The Cornelius Crane – Soul in the Lightning

    corneliouscrane

The Cornelius Crane, a multi-instrumentalist alt-Americana band from East Manchester are mixing up the influences of the best of seventies Americana with the best of British prog & Mancunian folk traditions.

Frontman Steve Wilson has been a cornerstone of Manchester music for many years fronting cult Madchester band Bong, the experimental Plastic Gun Alliance and Smile Like Fools who were courted by Miles Copeland, before his later band, also called Wilson, signed a deal with Fiction.

As a producer, Wilson has worked on albums for ex Chameleons drummer & guitarist John Lever & Dave Fielding, seventies punk legends Ed Banger & the Nosebleeds, rising stars Mary Joanna & the Southern Electrikk and Audioweb frontman Sugar Merchant with his band SupaJamma.

The line up is completed by brothers Dan & Mark Adams formerly of Valve, Jonathan Jackson & Paul Higham who joined Steve Wilson in Plastic Gun Alliance and guitarist/vocalist Jonny Roberts.

Following well received performances on this summer festival circuit and the release of three EPs to a strong critical response, the band have attracted fans from across the UK and strong radio support.

Previous Reviews for The Cornelius Crane
“All 4 tracks stand up, not one a filler and due to a fantastic/clear production together with those soaring choruses, superb musicianship and heartfelt homage to its US influences, this EP might be one of your favourite releases from any Manchester group this year.” Louder Than War

“The Cornelius Crane brought me back to that sweet mellow resonance of John, Paul, George and Ringo playing through “For No One.” For something that starts a little “eh?” it sure turns into something out of the ordinary. With a little exposure The Cornelius Crane has the potential to turn into the next big thing.” Vents Magazine

“Providing compelling examples of how rootsy old-fashioned song craft can be elevated by fluid musicianship & ambitious arrangements. All dovetailing vocal harmonies, bare-bones strings, luscious pedal steel and lyrics of keening realism. They bring to mind a more reigned in Mercury Rev / Band of Horses brand of cosmic country.” Metro

Jammerzine Exclusive: Meet The Goood Things

    EP #1 at Tower Records

    thegooodthings

About a month ago, in between watching epic fail compilations and playing Candy Crush Saga,  I found an awesome band on the internet, and being the curious George that I am, I decided to investigate. What I found was an eclectic mix of old school meets new sound with a distinctive vibe reminiscent of a modern take on the Mersey Sound. All the hooks were there to give you that energy we’ve all come to love so well when a classic yet uplifting chorus comes after styled first verse and each song can captivate you in a unique yet nostalgic way. What never becomes apparent, however, is that this band is not a veteran act. They are at that point in their career where they are still cutting their teeth in the music scene. Another thing that might not be apparent is that scene is Tokyo, Japan. Yes, that bastion of technology has unleashed the power of the indie artist and that power is good. Or should I say goood. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet The Goood Things.

If The Good Things are your thing, please check out their Bandcamp page and listen to their new EP. You can purchase the EP and name your price! All proceeds go toward recording new material!

I talk with Mike, lead vocalist of The Good Things, in the audio interview embedded above. Enjoy!

    ABOUT THE GOOOD THINGS:
The Goood Things is a 4-piece based in Tokyo playing throwback summer time rock’n’roll (all year round) and features Tosh (guitar), Mike (keys/vox), Kayo (bass) and Fuji (drums). Three members are Japanese but the dominant language spoken in the band is drunk Kiwi-English, while Mike – Aussie brought up in Germany – adds to the confusion with his where-the-devil-is-that-from kind of drawl.

But lets rewind the clock a bit. Long before The Goood Things formed in 2013 there was a Tokyo-based 3-piece band called Sunset Drive. Tosh was the guitarist and they took their energetic indie rock on tours of Europe and Japan, releasing 2 EPs and basically setting the benchmark way high for English-singing bands in Tokyo. When their lead singer Al went back to New Zealand, Tosh got rock’n’roll withdrawals and called Mike.

When Mike got the call he was singing (and still is) in The Mootekkis a garage rock 5 piece that has also released 2 CDs and toured New York back in 2012. Mike’s answer was “for sure” and Kayo – who used to play bass in a chicks band called Rubiks cube with Mike’s girlfriend, Ayumi – joined soon after. Drummer, Fuji, was playing in a jam band called Fontrio and jumped at the chance to start something new.

In July 2014, they released their debut self-titled EP at Shibuya’s The Game with Tokyo scene-settin bands Jimmy Binks and the Shakehorns, The Watanabes and Icon Girl Pistols. An estimated 150 people came down to celebrate and naturally the beers and tequila flowed. With a monthly residency at Shibuya’s Ruby Room and their EP to feature on Shinjuku Tower Records listening booth from October-December, this lot are just getting started.

Kate Young Joins Forces With Marit Fält On U.K. Tour

Kate in the Kettle embraces old customs with new ideas, merging sounds from different places and weaving them into their own tune. Whilst drawing upon past folk music traditions, the songs written by Scottish singer and instrumentalist Kate Young are driven by her passion to cultivate public awareness connected to many environmental issues. After their latest single ‘Green and Gold’ was released in May this year, Kate now turns her attention to releasing a new album called Swimmings Of The Head, on the 10th of October this year. The album title comes from a quote from the 16th century British herbalist, Nicholas Culpeper.

Kate Young combines her voice with her fiddle to make tapestries; music woven from different folk traditions with a base in Scottish fiddle playing and a strong environmental viewpoint that reflects a creative fire within this captivating and inspiring artist. Growing up near Edinburgh, her passion for her music has taken her to tour Europe and Australia as part of world music group ‘Ethno in Transit’; to performing alongside Mercury Award-nominee Eliza Carthy in the all-female fiddle-singers band ‘Carthy, Hardy, Farrell and Young’. She is now also a member of eclectic Brighton-based band, ‘Moulettes’.

Originally from Sweden/Norway, Marit Fält will join Kate on tour this October playing the beautiful låt-mandola (a specially Swedish designed bass mandola). Marit is also known from her playing in Vamm (Catriona MacDonald, Patsy Reid) and duo Marit & Rona. Kate and Marit met whilst studying together in Newcastle Univeristy’s Folk Music degree and are excited to release Swimmings of the Head, which was produced by Andy Bell and features musicians from Spain, Estonia and Italy. Kate in the Kettle is eternally grateful for the huge support they received for touring this album through their Indiegogo campaign.

The Short Fall is in the “State of Mind” to release their EP

Rockhampton singer-songwriter troubadours The Short Fall know all about the tyranny of distance in this large, sunburned country and knew that to release and tour their music, they’d have to be something extra special. The two brothers are almost single-minded in their approach to their songwriting and harmonies, their voices mingle with ease and their guitars sing with such ease. Their new EP ‘State of Mind’ is a testament to their focus and their belief in their songs.

Having recently releasing their Single ‘Seasons’, the time has come to release the EP and the filmclip for the single – the filmclip, shot by Living Lens in Byfield, Central Queensland, premiered on The AU review yesterday.

Ryan and Angelo Conway, the brothers from Rockhampton, have crafted a gorgeously pieced-together acoustic EP that takes listeners on an aural holiday in their own mind. Self-Titled track ‘State of Mind’ is another focus track of the EP, with so much heart and a big hook to match.

The ‘State of Mind’ EP was recorded in early 2014 on the Capricorn Coast with producer Anthony Lycenko, who was also at the helm for their debut EP, ‘Make a Move’. Lycenko has previously worked with Pete Murray, Busby Marou and Xavier Rudd. The track was mastered by Paul Blakey at 12th & Vine Post. ‘State of Mind’ takes the best of what contemporaries Boy & Bear, City & Colour and Bob Evans do best and puts a distinctly Queensland touch on it – in such a way that only brothers’ voices can harmonise so damn well.

‘State of Mind’ will be released on 17th October via iTunes and at the tour which will launch 24th October and take in Queensland’s coastline, including Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gladstone, Maryborough, Brisbane and over the border into Byron Bay.

The pair are garnering a reputation as one of the most anticipated up-and-coming singer/songwriter duos coming out of Queensland, having toured with Busby Marou and played with seasoned and varied artists such as Wendy Matthews, INXS, The Whitlams, Bobby Alu, Gyroscope, Kisschasy and more.

The Short Fall deliver with emotion and sincerity, wowing audiences with their flawless harmonies and unique blend of alternative indie folk.

‘State of Mind’ will be available on iTunes and all good online retailers from Friday October 17. The single, ‘Seasons’ is available on triple j unearthed and for free download from The Short Fall’s website.

Allison Crowe = Music + Movie Magic

“Soulful. Alive. Joyous. Grievous. Real, true, music is what I want to make.”

That’s how Allison Crowe framed things near the start of this century before launching Rubenesque Records Ltd., one of the world’s truly independent music labels.

Through legendary live performances, broadcasts, and a dynamic oeuvre of recordings, globally-acclaimed and loved, Crowe’s distinguished herself among today’s finest songwriters, recording and concert acts, and as a supreme interpreter of popular song.

Combining versatility and virtuosity, the amazing Canadian musician transmits emotion into a visceral joy – sharing heart and soul with audiences.

Timeless artistic expression has its own tradition in Canada, a land plentifully represented by: wordsmiths & tunesmiths, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot and Neil Young; by jazz pianist/composer Oscar Peterson; classical composer Marjan Mozetich; in theatre and opera – beautiful voices of Teresa Stratas, Richard Verreau, Léopold Simoneau; and other sublime standard-bearers.

Allison Crowe’s singularity carries her across the globe and into such company as the Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Britain’s Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, and dates with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Thrilling, fun, and moving, the Nanaimo, BC-born musician traverses Europe and North America from home-base in Corner Brook, Newfoundland earning hoorays even from Hollywood where appreciative movie Director Zack Snyder invited her to cameo in the latest Superman blockbuster.

Coming soon Allison Crowe releases “16 Songs” a video album reimagining century-spanning film, three decades of songwriting, and a dozen albums of modern music. Renowned for gorgeous, often ground-breaking, interpretations of Mitchell, Cohen, The Beatles, Pearl Jam +, Crowe’s set-list here is radiantly international, mixing original tunes (Disease, Circular Reasoning, Double-Edged Swords +) with covers of: Annie Lennox & Eurythmics, Radiohead, Tori Amos, Elton John & Bernie Taupin, Matthew Good, Hunters and Collectors.

We’ve recently witnessed novel approaches to twinning of music and video releases in the American mainstream. In December 2013, pop superstar Beyoncé paired a video with each of her album’s 14 new song tracks adding three bonus music videos all as part of the “Beyoncé” album physical release. Partial clips of the vids were posted online upon the album’s surprise launch.

This Summer “Weird Al” Yankovic built upon the model of his 2011 “Alpocalypse” album. For his July 2014 release, “Mandatory Fun”, pop music’s über-parodist-satirist-accordionist amped awareness by production-partnering with an array of web portals to release eight videos online the same week his album’s 12 music tracks became available.

Allison Crowe’s music videos for most of this millennium comprise, either, documentary, live-in-performance, films (eg. the hugely popular “Tidings” series from director Alex Postowoi’s cinéma vérité crew), or, audio recordings with ‘still’ images. The exceptions – a pair of music videos in narrative style – were both made in 2003: “Midnight” (also directed by Steadiman’s Postowoi), and “Scared” (from the transmission2media duo of Angela Kendall and Brian Dutkewich – known for their later work with musical twins Tegan and Sara).

Starting with 2011’s luminous “Arthur” – a song exploring love, memory and aging – Crowe’s videos also marry her song recordings with vintage footage from home-movies, silent films and classics of Georges Méliès, Dimitri Kirsanoff, Nadia Sibirskaia, Salvador Dali, Dominique Monfréy, Josef von Sternberg, D.W. Griffith plus other pioneers and visionaries of cinema (impressionists, surrealists, Dadaists, avant gardists, pop-artists+).

“The strange thing about cinema, and this would go for television film, is that no one really knows why music is needed. I would say after a lifetime in it I could not tell you why. But it is not complete without it… As a matter-of-fact, I may be bold enough to say that with very few exceptions, a piece of film, or a film cannot come to life without the help of music of some kind,” reflected composer Bernard Herrmann, a frequent collaborator with film director Alfred Hitchcock.

The “Master of Suspense”, Hitch himself, observed: “Art is emotion.”

“16 Songs” is an artful collection of Allison Crowe musical works with visuals from great creators and innovators – film-makers, animators, painters, photographers: Fernand Léger, Jean Vigo, Buster Keaton, Dave Fleischer & Max Fleischer, Edwin S. Porter, Man Ray, Hans Richter, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Winsor McCay, Augusto Genina, René Clair & Georg W. Pabst. Iconic images and figures – Louise Brooks, Lois Lane and Clark Kent/Superman, Michel Simon, Dita Parlo, Jean Dasté, and Kiki de Montparnasse – populate the video album playlist.

“Oh, this is wonderful, it really is,” says Slovenia’s Milka of an advance screening, “I love it.” The art-aficionado from Izola comments: “It is marvellous amalgamation of Allison’s voice and movie’s poetry. Both benefit from each other and give a viewer another dimension for song’s interpretation. While the movie, not known to me, suddenly takes me to place where one never ages. Love it.”

Curtains rise on Allison Crowe’s “16 Songs” video album daily from the New Moon of September 23 to the Full Moon of October 8, 2014. Visit your favourite online video portal to know how it feels.
