Allison Crowe = Music + Movie Magic

“Soulful. Alive. Joyous. Grievous. Real, true, music is what I want to make.”

That’s how Allison Crowe framed things near the start of this century before launching Rubenesque Records Ltd., one of the world’s truly independent music labels.

Through legendary live performances, broadcasts, and a dynamic oeuvre of recordings, globally-acclaimed and loved, Crowe’s distinguished herself among today’s finest songwriters, recording and concert acts, and as a supreme interpreter of popular song.

Combining versatility and virtuosity, the amazing Canadian musician transmits emotion into a visceral joy – sharing heart and soul with audiences.

Timeless artistic expression has its own tradition in Canada, a land plentifully represented by: wordsmiths & tunesmiths, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot and Neil Young; by jazz pianist/composer Oscar Peterson; classical composer Marjan Mozetich; in theatre and opera – beautiful voices of Teresa Stratas, Richard Verreau, Léopold Simoneau; and other sublime standard-bearers.

Allison Crowe’s singularity carries her across the globe and into such company as the Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Britain’s Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, and dates with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Thrilling, fun, and moving, the Nanaimo, BC-born musician traverses Europe and North America from home-base in Corner Brook, Newfoundland earning hoorays even from Hollywood where appreciative movie Director Zack Snyder invited her to cameo in the latest Superman blockbuster.

Coming soon Allison Crowe releases “16 Songs” a video album reimagining century-spanning film, three decades of songwriting, and a dozen albums of modern music. Renowned for gorgeous, often ground-breaking, interpretations of Mitchell, Cohen, The Beatles, Pearl Jam +, Crowe’s set-list here is radiantly international, mixing original tunes (Disease, Circular Reasoning, Double-Edged Swords +) with covers of: Annie Lennox & Eurythmics, Radiohead, Tori Amos, Elton John & Bernie Taupin, Matthew Good, Hunters and Collectors.

We’ve recently witnessed novel approaches to twinning of music and video releases in the American mainstream. In December 2013, pop superstar Beyoncé paired a video with each of her album’s 14 new song tracks adding three bonus music videos all as part of the “Beyoncé” album physical release. Partial clips of the vids were posted online upon the album’s surprise launch.

This Summer “Weird Al” Yankovic built upon the model of his 2011 “Alpocalypse” album. For his July 2014 release, “Mandatory Fun”, pop music’s über-parodist-satirist-accordionist amped awareness by production-partnering with an array of web portals to release eight videos online the same week his album’s 12 music tracks became available.

Allison Crowe’s music videos for most of this millennium comprise, either, documentary, live-in-performance, films (eg. the hugely popular “Tidings” series from director Alex Postowoi’s cinéma vérité crew), or, audio recordings with ‘still’ images. The exceptions – a pair of music videos in narrative style – were both made in 2003: “Midnight” (also directed by Steadiman’s Postowoi), and “Scared” (from the transmission2media duo of Angela Kendall and Brian Dutkewich – known for their later work with musical twins Tegan and Sara).

Starting with 2011’s luminous “Arthur” – a song exploring love, memory and aging – Crowe’s videos also marry her song recordings with vintage footage from home-movies, silent films and classics of Georges Méliès, Dimitri Kirsanoff, Nadia Sibirskaia, Salvador Dali, Dominique Monfréy, Josef von Sternberg, D.W. Griffith plus other pioneers and visionaries of cinema (impressionists, surrealists, Dadaists, avant gardists, pop-artists+).

“The strange thing about cinema, and this would go for television film, is that no one really knows why music is needed. I would say after a lifetime in it I could not tell you why. But it is not complete without it… As a matter-of-fact, I may be bold enough to say that with very few exceptions, a piece of film, or a film cannot come to life without the help of music of some kind,” reflected composer Bernard Herrmann, a frequent collaborator with film director Alfred Hitchcock.

The “Master of Suspense”, Hitch himself, observed: “Art is emotion.”

“16 Songs” is an artful collection of Allison Crowe musical works with visuals from great creators and innovators – film-makers, animators, painters, photographers: Fernand Léger, Jean Vigo, Buster Keaton, Dave Fleischer & Max Fleischer, Edwin S. Porter, Man Ray, Hans Richter, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Winsor McCay, Augusto Genina, René Clair & Georg W. Pabst. Iconic images and figures – Louise Brooks, Lois Lane and Clark Kent/Superman, Michel Simon, Dita Parlo, Jean Dasté, and Kiki de Montparnasse – populate the video album playlist.

“Oh, this is wonderful, it really is,” says Slovenia’s Milka of an advance screening, “I love it.” The art-aficionado from Izola comments: “It is marvellous amalgamation of Allison’s voice and movie’s poetry. Both benefit from each other and give a viewer another dimension for song’s interpretation. While the movie, not known to me, suddenly takes me to place where one never ages. Love it.”

Curtains rise on Allison Crowe’s “16 Songs” video album daily from the New Moon of September 23 to the Full Moon of October 8, 2014. Visit your favourite online video portal to know how it feels.

Daily Dose: 208 Talks Of Angels – Seize My Plans

    300481_296886356988365_379908791_n

The band “208 Talks of angels” was created in 2006 by Anthony Fadeyev and Vladimir Romanchenko, who decided to join their efforts for the search of new music concept and new extraordinary sound. The word “angel” has no religious implication, but is just the translation of Greek “aggelos” that means herald, messenger. This word is used within the music concept that contemplates exploration and adoption of something new, progressive and state-of-the-art. The presence of number “208” is still the secret, but someday it will be revealed. The style of “208 Talks of angels” can not be characterized in usual way for the reason that there is an great number of styles mixed and interrelated, as for the most interesting things are always located at the joint of the cultures. Musicians themselves define their music as III – Independent Individual Intellectual. For other people it may sound like the symbiosis of Alternative Rock, Classics, Industrial, Ballad, Ethnic, Progressive, Electronic, Break Beat, Ambient and many others.

The idea of creating of “208 Talks of angels” and it posterior activity came from the wish to give the people access to high music culture, to convince people of getting out of dictated limits, stereotypes and templates and to persuade the listeners to comprehend the various kinds of stern reality. It is necessary to mention the active usage of technical vocabulary in texts that again specifies the precise vector of band`s progress.

The full-house and very successful concert with Udmurt National Symphonic Orchestra that took place in Izhevsk (on 24th November 2009) became extremely meaningful step in band`s progress. After that event the band has received many invitations for collaboration from other orchestras and cinematic directors.

The band regularly takes the part in mass media projects – radio and television programmes. In prospect it is planned to participate in significant thematic events, the musicians cooperate with organizers and funds of Russia and foreign countries.

For today the band has recorded first album “DEAD MAIL” which is released on Aug. 1st by UNABLE RECORDS. Such great musicians and engineers like Chris Moore, Marty Grebb, Tony Cook, Paul Rockwell and Riley Connell took part in recording and mixing.

Full live gig programme of “208 talks of angels” includes over 40 compositions.

At present time the participants of band are:
    Anthony Fadeyev – guitar, vocals, effects, composition, programming, sampling;

First Listen: The Art of Amputation – Distorted Pop Song

    10153323_10153901714685062_1441865520_n

The Art of Amputation are an alternative five-piece from London who combine soaring melodies with experimental sounds and big fuzzy guitars to create soundscapes they claim will “hold your hand in dark times.”

The band consists of Freddy de Lord (Keyboards, Vocals and Saxophone), Hugh Fox (Drums, Drum-Loops/Programming and Percussion), Allan Harrod (Vocals, Guitar and Keyboards), Mark Hyden (Guitars and Vocals) and newly added member Tim Harrod (Vocals and Percussion).

The Art of Amputation began when Hugh and Allan got together as a duo after the break up of a previous band. The pair started writing and rehearsing together as a simple keys/guitar and a drummer outfit. Together they wrote and recorded most of their first EP, though it soon became clear that they needed to find an additional guitarist to attain the sound they wanted. Mark was recruited and the trio began rehearsing and writing based on a shared appreciation of an eclectic range of artists like Weezer, Pixies, The Beatles and Bowie. Time in the studio triggered an influx of ideas and the band needed another member in order to realise them. Freddy joined in a formative period for The Art of Amputation. Each member’s individual styles began to compliment the others and the result was the creation of some impressive and polished tracks.

Allan’s keen ear for melody has been the main catalyst for the creation of each of the band’ compositions with other members working together until the song as a whole falls into place. The bands last writing tool is always the studio. They have big ideas and working with producer Steve Honest in Hackney Road Studios has ensured the creative process progresses seamlessly. Allan’s brother Tim recently completed the band’s line up, joining The Art of Amputation on vocals and percussion for their live shows.

Their new single ‘Distorted Pop Song’ is a stunning and intricately layered composition that channels the influences of The Flaming Lips and The Big Pink with its infectious, uplifting melody climaxing in a Spector-esque Wall of Sound.

Discord Curse Releases Episode One of DCTV Vlog

Shortly after having their single premiered on New Noise Magazine, southern Minnesota deathcore outfit Discord Curse has posted the first episode of DCTV. The vlog, which can be viewed HERE, features footage of the band practicing, some live footage from a recent show, general band hijinks, and a short clip of the song “#Bandwhore” off the band’s forthcoming self-produced Burnt Offerings EP. Vocalist Antonio Jandro had this to say on the EP, “It was really written to have every song be different than the last and really bring you on a journey of crazy music. If you listen to the EP in its entirety it flows together but each song is a completely different style.” The EP will be released September 29th and features guest vocals from Johnny McBee of The Browning. Discord Curse will then go back to writing for their full length that they plan to record by the end of the year.

    About Discord Curse:
Southern Minnesota deathcore outfit Discord Curse was birthed in late June of 2014 to spread their vicious attack. This attack, while rooted in death metal, features influences from metalcore, slam death metal, and hardcore among others. Featuring demonic growls, technical riffs, and mosh pit-inducing drumming, the band’s debut EP, entitled Burnt Offerings, was recorded shortly after the band formed. Vocalist Antonio Jandro and guitarist Derek Petrika self-produced the EP in their own professional recording studio. With an EP in hand and already lining up shows with power hitters in the form of Suffokate, Mouth of the South, Adaliah, and Years Since The Storm, Discord Curse is set to break out in the latter part of 2014 while working on their debut full length.

    Party Meets Poetry

Independent Music Promotions today announced that Be Easy Music will release Somewhere in a Dark City (via Be Easy Music), the newest collaboration between Minneapolis rapper Vision the Kid and producer Tru. The duo achieved success in 2012 and 2013 with their first two records, Lost Summer and BrokenRadioLove. Tracks from those releases appeared on CMJ’s hip-hop charts, as well as on MTV and E! Network. According to Capable Kel of the music blog Come
and Take It, Vision the Kid’s “rhymes are hard, lyrics intelligent, and full of Midwest flavor.” All of Vision the Kid’s music is available on his official site.

In 2013, Doug MacRostie of Macadelic Studios touched on why Vision the Kid was voted “Best Local Rapper” in a poll by Minneapolis publication Vita.mn.: “What draws me into his music is the way he weaves in a raw and direct flow of poignant, relevant, and ear-catching lyrical genius.” In 2014, Tru’s debut instrumental album, Smokers Lounge, earned a glowing review from Minneapolis publication City Pages and inclusion in the fourth volume of their Gimme Noise Beat Tape.

The duo’s first collaborative effort, Lost Summer, lasted more than ten weeks on the CMJ hip-hop charts, peaking at #12. The debut music video, “Lost Summer,” was featured on MTV.com. The pair’s most recent EP, BrokenRadioLove, also appeared in CMJ’s hip-hop charts, holding a Top 40 spot for multiple weeks. Their single “Live from the Midwest” has been featured on both MTV’s The Real World and E! Network’s Kourtney & Kim Take Miami.

Somewhere in a Dark City displays the type of growth fans and critics want to see from artists. It is densely personal, at times vulnerable, but overall an invitingly listenable record. Mixing true stories of drug addiction and heartbreak with tracks of pure, danceable braggadocio, Vision the Kid & Tru set out to make a hip-hop record that sounds as current as it does timeless, as personal as it is universal, and as much party as it is poetry.

Mrs. X Gets Into The ‘Business Swing’ Of Things

YelloSunshineBeat is releasing the new single “Business swing” of the mysterious singer and songwriter Mrs. X. This single has been produced by Yello co-founder Carlos Perón, like her latest hit “Summer days”.

Fans are warmly invited to discover all the tracks of the single on Mrs. X´s website www.mrs-x.tv from 19 September onwards.

There are three different versions of the song on the single: Business swing shiny star mix, Business swing radio mix, and Business swing radio & video mix, which address music enthusiasts in general and not only pop music lovers.

Business swing radio mix was recorded with the special aim of showing Mrs. X´s jazz and soul roots. The sound is fresh, energetic and reaches thanks to Bruce Taylor Lawrence´s guitar, the sound of musical masterpiece.

As to Business swing Radio edit and Shiny Star Version, they are certain to be appreciated by dance and club lovers, as the beats are full of energy and move your heartbeat. However, it is not standardized club music as the modern and fresh sound is combined with rock components.

Carlos Perón decided to extend the single with a further title. It is a remix of the current hit “Summer Days”. This remix was produced by Cult DJ Miss Shiva (Germany) and Opus Quark (Brazil). The feedback from Mrs. X’s fans was so positive that the remix, produced following the release of “Summer Days”, will find a permanent home on the new single “Business Swing”.

Work on the song “Business Swing” began in Azerbaijan. Top producer Yashar Bakhish from Baku had worked on a previous version of “Business Swing”, which is already well known in Azerbaijan. When Carlos Perón heard the Baku version, he knew that this song had the potential to become a hit and hence produced a new powerful version suited more to European ears. However, some background sounds will remind music aficionados where it came from originally, which is what makes “Business Swing” so unique.

Mrs. X says: “The song is about two people who meet at a Business meeting and who fall in love. It is love at first sight, forever, the eternal dream of the world, but with a modern touch. The listener will surely be enchanted by it. An office version of Romeo and Juliet, Petrarca and Laura at a meeting, the idea makes life richer and more beautiful as only love counts.”

“This song is about a modern love story,” says Carlos Perón. “We would like to bring a modern fairy-tale into today’s world. It is important to let the heart speak.”

A music video is planned for the song “Business Swing”.

Daily Dose: John Scargall – Harder They Fall

    John-Scargall-NHRA-Performance

John Scargall is a hot, smoldering, volcanic eruption of a new act out of Philadelphia who has fire marshals everywhere scrambling to contain those adjectives. His time in Cubicle Workers Anonymous behind him, John is now on a Rockin’ Country journey of epic proportions.

At first priding himself on a low “performer to listener ratio,” for which he states “provides for a more personalized listening experience,” John is now seeing his unique brand of Rockin’ Country music spread throughout the entire world. When asked why he thought this was happening, he responded “I only use the 12 notes Beethoven did, so you know it’s good.”

For his debut album, John decided to work with a 5-time Grammy award winning producer, but after weeks of unreturned phone calls and e-mails, he ended up going with his friend from high school, Christian O’Connor. But he did end up producing his record at Morningstar Studios, which is run by Glenn Barratt who has 6 grammys! Is it grammys or grammies? Gummy goes to gummies, so why did grammys get the Presidential pardon on the change to “ie”? But I digress.

John will be releasing his debut album, “Breakthrough”, in early 2015, and it’s chock full of wailing guitars, rippin’ lap steel riffs, and rich vocal harmonies that pound his positive, motivational message home. His music has trended #1 on 93.7 WSTW and has been heard or currently being heard on Eagle 97.7, 97.3 WZZE, Rockin’ Country Radio Online and Rocker’s Dive Radio. John is on tour with The Devyl Nellys and Christian O’Connor, playing clubs and NHRA Hot Rod Races across the Eastern U.S.

John is also a big animal lover and has a chocolate lab named Penny, who is his baby. So, let’s bring this home. If you believe that anything is possible…if you believe that things can and will get better…and if you believe that being yourself is always the right thing to do even if it involves referring to yourself in the third person throughout an entire biography in a silly albeit slightly narcissistic kind of way..THEN LET’S GO CHANGE THE WORLD TOGETHER. 🙂

Rapper Kaymbo Promises To Be ‘Good To Me’

‘Good To Me’ is the heartfelt single from critically acclaimed Canadian rapper/writer/producer Kaymbo Shines, signed to Defient/Grand Hustle (B.o.B., T.I. & Iggy Azalea).

Already a proven hit with media across Canada & the USA, picking up playlists on radio & TV across the countries, Kaymbo Shine’s ‘Good To Me’ video debut in the UK is sure to make waves here as well! The high quality visuals comes courtesy of Matty Barnes, who has shot videos for the likes of Macklemore and 2 Chainz.

Featuring the emotional vocals from D’amyka, this powerful song was written about Kaymbo’s struggle when his mother experienced a devastating stroke. It’s a beautiful and uplifting song about how to stay positive when life’s pains can be their worst.

And, to show his gratitude to the medical care she received, 10% of the single’s sales go towards the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
‘Good To Me’ is the first single taken from Kaymbo Shines’ upcoming EP, to be released later this year.

‘Conceited’ Teen Creating Hip Hop Buzz

Dancer turned recording artist Mz Day Day is ready to conquer hip hop with the debut of her single Conceited’. The Henry County teen has been a fixture at several youth events as a special guest or dancer, and now, she’s ready to dive in.

‘Conceited’ is a cuss free number that tackles the way young women resort to cyber bullying and rumor mills when they are jealous of another person’s success. Mz Day Day said she wants to make music younger people can enjoy that speaks to some of the situations they are facing.

“The making of the music video was pretty cool,” she says. “You basically see me coming into the studio being upset with the hate people are giving me and then you see me following advice to basically push that negative energy into positive energy but putting it into my music instead of retaliating.”

According to Mz Day Day, these are some of the lessons she is learning by being a part of Usher Raymond’s Atlanta-based youth group.

“Being a part of Usher’s New Look is one of the things I am most proud of,” she says. “Not only is it an opportunity to be a part of something great but it is also an opportunity to be able to learn from someone who is a big deal in the music industry and to network with young people my own age.”

It’s not just networking Mz Day Day is doing. The teen known for switching her hair colors or taking fashion risks, is also focused on philanthropy.

“I don’t believe you have to be a big success to start giving back,” she shared. “If you have a mindset to give back from the start, you are going to succeed and continue to have that mindset. It’ll be easier for you at the end of the day to do something you always did instead of try to do something brand new that’s not a habit.”

Daily Dose: Stage Republic – All Out

    Stage-Republic---June14-05

Stage Republic produces Pop Music with a little bit of 80s and a lot of now.

Stage Republic has an instantly recognizable sound reminiscent of the 80s superbands like Duran Duran, Phil Collins and Sting combined with the best of Dutch beats and Raven’s trademark voice.

The US based International Music & Entertainment Association (IMEA) just officially nominated Stage Republic for an award in the categories “Best Alternative Group of the Year” and “Best Alternative Album of the Year”.

The band’s debut album “Firstage” is being praised for its variety in styles by reviewers. The album unites disco, pop, rock, dance and country-folk under one umbrella. The sound balances somewhere between European-pop-group and American-rock-band with a different emphasis in each song.

“Hooks Around every corner”. “Anthemic”Skope Magazine, US about “Firstage”

“A retro chic, rhythm heavy pop treat”EclecticPop.com, US about “Hollywood”

“A brilliant summer soundtrack”House in the Sand, Germany about “Firstage”

“Raven has a distinct vocal approach, melodically sound and easier coasting through tone and textures to fit each individual mood. There is a theme of hyperspeed relationships that seems to proliferate across Firstage, a fitting approach to a sound that (mostly) keeps a similar pace.”MusicEmissions.com, US about “Firstage”

“The lyrics and vocals are so haunting that you are enchanted by the sheer beauty that is emitted from this song. Perfect”Daily Complaints, UK about “Falling Angel”

“Firstage is electronic, tight and innovative. Enough familiar sounds to make it accessible, plenty of authenticity and uniqueness to not call it a copycat. Stage Republic delivers a very strong debut album.”West-point.nl, NL about “Firstage”

The 1st single of the abum titled “All Out” marks everything Stage Republic stands for: refuse to think it’s hard – instead do everything in your power to achieve your goals. The song made it to the #1 position in the Official National Dutch Indie Chart and is the most played song of the album in the US where college and university radio stations are now picking up the music of Stage Republic in a big way.

The songs of Stage Republic deal with ambitions and relations in a fast changing world. The desire to have what you can’t have. To do the unthinkable. Achieve the impossible. There is often a dark undertone or double meaning. The album “Firstage” marks the proverbial First Stage in the life of Stage Republic.

Stage Republic is the vehicle of expression of eclectic Dutch recording artist Raven.

Dutch singer and songwriter Raven kickstarted his musical career when he was the first artist ever to launch a single on a USB-Stick which was still a revolutionary idea in 2005. He showed his sense of innovation again when in 2010 he released his Mystery Pop album containing songs inspired by a number of popular mystery books, all fully endorsed and co-promoted by the A-list authors including NY-Times bestselling authors like Glenn Cooper and Kathleen McGowan. The idea delivered him a Eurosonic Interactive Artist Award nomination and rocketing sales. Hollywood icon Patrice Chaplin arranged for a music video with Ellen Barkin for the single “City of Secrets”, inspired by her book of the same name. A quote by Raven was included on the cover of ‘The Cynical Idealist’, the John Lennon biography presented by Yoko Ono at the 30th anniversary of Lennon’s death in december 2010. In the same year, the British horror movie the Stone, in which Raven made his acting debut won Best Foreign Film award on the mountain film festival of California.

In recent years Raven released 2 albums and 9 singles in 2 languages under his Dutch artist name “Corjan”. His music was used in several films. Early 2013, he participated in a documentary alongside British Top-of-the-Pops presenter and Heart FM DJ Jamie Theakston.

Imminence Records Artist Kinnecom Announces ‘Virtual Gravity’ Due Out November 11th

Imminence Records has announced their signing of emerging North Carolina alternative hip hop artist Kinnecom. Kinnecom is the solo side project of Motiv (formerly named Motivational) guitarist Andrew Kinnecom. The project, which was formally announced last year, will bring deep instrumentals and emotional soundscapes to modern music while challenging modern day mainstream artists with powerful songwriting. Kinnecom had this to say on the signing, “This album is one of my biggest accomplishments as an artist, and it’s quickly grown into a dream come true. With that said, I know that in order to go through with this release, I’m going to need it to be in the right hands and I will need it to be alongside dedicated workers that I can trust. Imminence Records is the perfect label. The owner of Imminence and I have grown alongside each other in the industry, and I’m excited to not only see where we will take this album, but also where it will take us.”

Along with the signing announcement, it is also announced that Kinnecom’s debut full length, entitled Virtual Gravity, will be released November 11th. The eight track release will feature six unreleased tracks and remastered versions of the two singles that were previously released. Kinnecom commented on the material by saying, “I am confident that the new music I am releasing will inspire a new generation of songwriting combining countless styles of music. We are living in the age of information and technology, an age where what we create and what we listen to isn’t limited or defined by what is sitting in front of us. Music is blending together more and more day by day and we now have the power to choose not to give it limitations.” The eight tracks blends alternative hip hop, soul, RnB, and pop, among other influences, together to create a masterful soundscape that will please any music fan.

    TRACKS:

    1. Under Virtual Gravity
    2. Down And Stare
    3. Breathe You In, Sink Into You
    4. Hometowns
    5. Strike The Match
    6. Echo Emotion
    7. Breathtaking
    8. The Motive, The Closure

    About Kinnecom:
Emerging out of Raleigh, NC, alternative hip hop artist Kinnecom grew up performing and writing his own music at a very young age. He has written/recorded multiple albums, toured nationally, and worked with artists and producers nationwide. In 2011, Kinnecom recorded his solo instrumental album gaining him recognition from artists around the country. This recognition brought him to move across the country to record an album with Drew Fulk and sign his first recording contract with Indianola Records during his stint with post-hardcore outfit, Wealth In Water. After Wealth In Water disbanded in 2013, Kinnecom and fellow members formed Motiv (formerly named Motivational) before heading out on two national tours and recorded their debut album in mid-2014.

During that same timeframe, Kinnecom began work on his debut full length album entitled Virtual Gravity. The hard hitting album is blended with textural ambience, soothing vocals, and poetic rapping that brings his dynamic music to stand out in the music industry. Virtual Gravity plays as an outlet to tell Kinnecom’s story and his perspective on current social issues, uphill struggles throughout his career, and motivating messages directed to his listeners. By blending powerful songwriting and emotional soundscapes, Kinnecom defines cinematic hip hop. His debut album releases November 18th on Imminence Records.

First Look: Echotape – Whiskey Bar

Photo taken by Blue Gorilla Pictures

Currently unsigned, seeking management and label representation, hot young Hampshire quartet Echotape can already count Dermot O’Leary as a fan after he played their recent excellent self-released debut We Should Feel Like We’re In Love on his Saturday afternoon BBC Radio 2 show. Since then Carl Barat of The Libertines has joined them on stage at a recent London gig and they’ve been slogging away on the live circuit, building a name for themselves via the DIY approach.

It’s seen this song trending on Soundcloud and they now have over 165,000 combined plays on both tracks, leading Sky News to get in touch to run a feature on them next week. Vocalist Marc Burford is impressive on this confident, tight slice of raw guitar euphoria and you’d be churlish to not want to join them for the booze-fuelled ride.

Club Jubilee at Camden’s Barfly on October 10 is the launch night party for the single. The great little video gives a taste of what to expect and you can see yourself why their live reputation is building very rapidly. We’ll drink to that.

    ABOUT ECHOTAPE:
Echotape was formed in 2011 by a group of like-minded guys from the music scene in a small, off-the-map town in the South of England.

Living together in their own studio and flat, the boys set about getting their music heard from all corners of the globe. Their sense of adventure has seen the band perform from Hollywood to Holyhead, Moscow to Madrid. Feature in London’s Tate Gallery, have naked stage invasions in Dublin, and jam onstage with Carl Barat of The Libertines.

Their DIY approach was featured in Sky News’ report and interview with the band on the DIY ethic amongst new artists in November 2013. Their single “We Should Feel Like We Are In Love”, trended on SoundCloud after release in April 2014, clocking over 100,000 online plays through self-release, and a sold-out limited edition run of 500 CD singles.

This also saw the band invited for a studio session with BBC Introducing South, and spend the summer on the festival circuit at the likes of The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City and Blissfields.

Echotape have just announced the release of their new single ‘Whiskey Bar’ out on 13 October 2014. This will again see the band tour the UK and have a whole lot of fun doing it.

First Listen: Kid Dray – Gear Up

    Gear_UP_COVER-bell

The rapper known as Kid Dray has released his latest single, “Gear Up.” The track was produced by popular hip-hop producer Purple Neezy, of Russia. It has been proudly published on the Cool Base Records independent music label, entirely without support from the corporate music infrastructure. “Gear Up” is the first single to be showcased from Dray’s up-and-coming mixtape, “The Freeway.” A drop date of November, 2014 has been rumored for “The Freeway,” though Cool Base has announced no official day of release. Upbeat, slick, and driven by cracking back beats and cleverly crafted rhymes,

“Gear Up” does as fine a job at showcasing the skills of Kid Dray as it does the talents of Purple Neezy.

Kid Dray cites as main artistic influences J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco, and Drake. His style takes many of the best attributes of these artists and adds to them to a dynamic delivery on the mic that is all his own. Born in Africa, Dray raps with all the laid-back confidence of the American west coast as well as with the casual aggression of the east. Add to this the key elements of Purple Neezy’s dirty-south sound and a general idea of the “Gear Up” experience can be imagined.

Speaking of the themes in his “Gear Up” single and impending “Freeway” record, Dray writes, “My album speaks to those oriented in the new world and what it’s all about, letting the young know they are the future and also addressing the third worlds, what they represent, and respecting their lineage.”

Only 19 years old, Kid Dray’s debut single “My Drank” hit online shelves as recent as February, 2014. It notably featured the Los Angeles rap hero, Ace B. “My Drank” obtained widespread public and college radio airtime and garnered positive reviews in every locale in which it was played.

Dray’s official bio closes with the mission statement: “Kid Dray’s music aims to make musical messages from the third worlds affect the rest of the world. Kid Dray is an artist, not just with the aim of blowing up and making money from huge sales and fame, but aiming also to put his style as a signature on the music scene and to inspire youngsters about life and the future.”

“Gear Up” by Kid Dray is available online worldwide.

Jammerzine Exclusive: The Talks – Commoners, Peers, Drunks and Thieves Sneak Peek!

The last three years have seen The Talks working relentlessly to bring us a smorgasbord of bouncy, big hitting singles with ‘Can Stand The Rain’ featuring Neville Staple and ‘Friday Night’ creating a huge buzz online, replicated by the response of the crowd when the band have performed live. With main stage performances at globally renowned festivals such as ‘This Is Ska’ (DE), ‘Mighty Sounds’ (CZ) and the UK’s ‘Rebellion’, tweets of appraisal and support from new wave big hitters ‘Less Than Jake’, glowing reviews and cover features from Big Cheese and Vive Le Rock Magazines – not to mention appearing in programmes on various UK TV networks – the bands reputation has surged from strength to strength.

2014’s recent singles ‘Don’t Look Behind You’ and ‘Radio’ have paved the way for The Talks’ long highly anticipated new album ‘Commoners, Peers, Drunks and Thieves’, and these cheeky Yorkshire chaps are gaining widespread attention on an international level. The album offers an insight into the versatility of the band’s sound. ‘Light Up’ is an up tempo and anti-love song whereas ‘Ceasefire’ featuring Itch from The King Blues is a hard-edged call to arms, a fast paced and dazzling assault on the senses.

Following another busy summer of festivals across Europe, the band will be taking their new album on the road with an extensive European tour planned for October and November.

Of the album, lead singer Pat Pretorius says “It’s really personal. Our last album ‘Live Now, Pay Later’ felt more like a catalogue of songs, but this time it feels like a real album, a journey. We agonised over this, and we’d like to think it’ll bring our audience closer to us, help get the idea and vibe across more clearly.”

“It’s visceral stuff and The Talks deliver it with verve and punch” -Louder Than War

“There’s a revival going on. The forgotten sound of early ’80s ska is making a return in a form more suited to the modern age. 2-Tone has collided head-on with the US ska-punk scene and out of it has emerged a new sound, so new that it hasn’t yet been named.” – Team Rock

“It’s rare to be so impressed by every song in a set and to go away thinking; next gig near me, I am there!” – Punk Archives

“Oozing that classic Ska sound… Bouncing beats, blasts of brass refrains and catchy choruses…. Truly uplifting” – Gig Slutz

“Dapper British style that harks back to 2-Tone and always retains a danceable pulse that keeps the skinhead spirit of 69 alive” -Songeist

“Full of energy and jubilant vibes. Quit reading and let the music do the talking” – Love is Pop

L.A. Movie Awards Gets a Deadly Revision

Gregory Blair’s slow-burn, psychological thriller DEADLY REVISIONS has been selected to screen at the L.A. Movie Awards Fall 2014 festival, having won the award for “Best Narrative Feature” as well as the Award for “Best Actor” for lead Bill Oberst, Jr. This is the second and third award for the film which earlier won the EOTM Award for “Best Director of an Indie Horror Film”.

“It’s very exciting,” Blair says. “We just found out about the awards and the screening and it’s only a little over a week away!”

In the film, Oberst, Jr. plays Grafton Torn—an amnesiac horror film writer for whom hypnotherapy and nightmares reveal terrifying images that just can’t be real. Or can they? As scripts write themselves, hatchets appear and disappear and people end up dead, Grafton begins to wonder…as does the audience.

“I’m especially thrilled that Bill is getting noticed for his work in the film,” Blair says. “We spent a lot of time talking about the character and how his journey had to be the audience’s journey…to a point; but that they would begin seeing him as an unreliable narrator and then watch him from an entirely different angle. It was a tricky thing to pull off and I think Bill did so masterfully. I’m glad to see others agree.”

DEADLY REVISIONS will screen in Block 5 of the L.A. Movie Awards in Hollywood, CA on September 27th 2014 at the Actors Company Theater (916a N. Formosa Ave., Hollywood CA 90046). Award presentations and a Q & A session will follow the screening. Tickets are available here: http://www.thelamovieawards.com/Tickets.html
