Christie Helps Filmmakers Share Their Vision with Dazzling Clarity

Christie®, a world leader in advanced cinema technologies and visual displays, brings the 39th Annual Toron to International Film Festival®* into sharper focus this year by lighting up an expanded list of venues with Christie 4K-resolution digital cinema projection. With 4K submissions to the festival having doubled from 2013, Christie, the official projection sponsor for 14 consecutive years, will offer 4K screening capability at Roy Thomson Hall, Princess of Wales Theatre, The Elgin Theatre’s Visa Screening Room and Ryerson Theatre. All TIFF Bell Lightbox cinemas also feature Christie 4K projection.

The Toronto International Film Festival is the world’s largest and most acclaimed public film festival, this year screening 392 features and 139 world premieres from 79 countries. The Festival will be held September 4 – 14.

“In the short span of a decade, nearly 100 percent of Festival screenings have gone from traditional film to digital, reflecting a global technological revolution that has transformed the filmmaking world,” said Diane Cappelletto, TIFF’s director of technical production services.

“Christie’s increasing presence throughout the Festival as the official digital projection partner has been instrumental in helping us meet the evolving needs of filmmakers by keeping pace with the speed of these changes.”

In addition to the use of Christie Solaria Series 4K and 2K DLP Cinema® projectors, Christie is providing the Christie HD10K-M projector with dual HD-SDI input module, and six Christie CineIPM 2K digital cinema image processors.

Christie is also supporting TIFF’s inaugural Festival Street initiative, September 4 – 7, during which King Street West will be transformed into a “pedestrian playground.” The event will feature live music, a pop-up show, food trucks, and art installations. A Christie Roadster HD20K projector will illuminate the Rdio Music Zone and the Steve and Rashmi Gupta Family Stage, where high-energy performances will entertain the crowd.

Christie True 4K – The New Global Standard in Resolution
Christie will also support legendary filmmaker and Academy Award winning visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull, who will lead a discussion, “Ad Infinitum: Bigger, Faster, Brighter Movies – The Changing Creative Landscape of Digital Entertainment,” on September 11th as part of TIFF’s Industry Conference, a professional development forum for registered Festival delegates. Trumbull will demonstrate the power of 3D 4K 120 frames per second (fps) projection by presenting his groundbreaking short film, UFOTOG, on a Christie Mirage 4K projector. This film originally premiered in May at the Seattle Cinerama Theater’s 2nd Annual Sci-Fi Film Festival using the Christie Mirage 4K, the world’s first and only 4K DLP® resolution projector running at a true 120Hz.

“With Christie’s unswerving support, I have been able to explore an emerging new and immersive cinematic experience that is made possible via 3D 4K at 120 fps. The screen seems to disappear, becoming a ‘reality window,’ which offers a powerfully emotive new relationship between viewers and the movie. As a writer/director this offers an exciting new challenge and opportunity to substantially improve and differentiate the cinema experience, bringing back a sense of awe and spectacle that is not possible with conventional 24 fps 2K,” said Douglas Trumbull.

“Christie continues to set the new standard for uncompromising image fidelity, brightness, and resolution, allowing filmmakers to share their visions with audiences in ways they never could before,” said Kathryn Cress, vice president of global and corporate marketing at Christie. “We considered it an honor to be a trusted digital projection partner of the Festival, providing our acclaimed 4K technology to help convey the stunning power of entries like Monsoon, which offer compelling and emotional visual experiences that only true 4K technology can deliver.”

Vividly shot in 4K, Sturla Gunnarsson’s Monsoon is a powerful and emotional reflection on the devastating rains that descend upon India, and their chaotic yet necessary impact on the country’s agriculture, economy, and lives of the people. In addition to screening the film in 4K, Christie will also be powering some of this year’s other buzz-worthy selections. Among these is an account of the Pink Floyd frontman’s continent-crossing concert tour of The Wall Live Tour with film Roger Waters the Wall, directed by Roger Waters and Sean Evans.

“The Festival offers an unparalleled opportunity for both established and emerging artists to bring their vision to a world stage,” noted John Hallman, Christie’s director of Canadian sales. “With 4K-resolution becoming the new standard in digital cinema, Christie screenings at the Festival are as close to realizing filmmakers’ vision as one can imagine, offering the brightest and sharpest images in the industry.”

Around the globe, Christie’s digital projection sponsorships include Cannes, the British Film Institute and the prestigious Shanghai International Film Festival, where a Christie 4K projection system screened the fully restored classic Chinese film, Stage Sisters, revealing the film’s finer details that were not visible prior to 4K.

Bully Expert to Bully Proof Youth Through Teen Nation Tour

Obese, GLBT, or otherwise different from the crowd are just a few of the reasons children and teens are being bullied — sometimes to death — in America’s schools, with some even taking their own lives this year alone.

Intensified by the inescapable internet, bullying has spun out of control. Suicide is now the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University. These growing numbers prove that bullying has become a freighting epidemic in communities and schools across the world. This epidemic causes 160,000 children a day to stay home from school because they are afraid of being bullied, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

Teen Nation Tour is a yearlong anti-bullying campaign made up of teen musicians that travels the US and visits over 10,000 kids a week in schools. The Teen Nation program has been proven to be effective in raising awareness. In an effort to improve upon an already effective program, we brought in The Bully Doctor. Here’s why we chose him…

Since 1999 Tim (The Bully Doctor) Hutchinson has worked to stop bullying through hundreds of presentations to thousands of students, and working with parents, education officials, juvenile detention centers, law enforcement, and other outreach efforts. Along the way he’s stopped four school shootings and prevented over fifty teen suicides. He developed a program for youth called the Bully Proof system and has a goal of putting it in the hand for free to every student in America. This is the program that will now be featured and shared at all Teen Nation Tour assemblies.

What is Bully Proof? It’s a proven system which shows students EXACTLY what to do & how to respond, step-by-step, in detail when being bullied, (before, during and after an encounter), and EXACTLY how to stand-up, step-by-step, to help others being bullied.

The Bully Doctor has taught this system at hundreds of schools to thousands of students resulting in bullying being reduced an average of 80%. This system has been thoroughly researched, time-tested, and proven over and over again for more than a decade. Combined with our awareness campaign, the net effect will prove to be a powerful and unique resource to stop bullying. In celebration of this new partnership The Bully Doctor will giveaway a download of his Bully proof system to every student at every school the Teen Nation Tour visits this year.

The Teen Nation fall tour kicks off on September 8th in Raleigh, NC and will visit cities and towns throughout North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Texas through the end of 2014.

For more information on Teen Nation or The Bully Doctor please go to www.teennationtour.org and www.askthebullydoctor.com

    About the Teen Nation Tour:
The Teen Nation Tour was founded by Lee Wilson, whose son was badly beaten due to bullying. Afterwards Lee made it his personal mission to stop bullying among teens. He recognized the importance of reaching our youth through a peer-to-peer program for schools. With this idea in mind, Wilson created the concept for The Teen Nation Tour assembly. The assembly combines well known teen musicians that share their personal bullying stories and share their love of music on a peer-to-peer level that is having a major effect on the bullying problem. Some teachers are calling it the “Anti-bullying program that finally works.” The Teen Nation Tour’s peer-to-peer community service program and campaign educates youth about bullying in a way students can relate – through music.

About the Bully Doctor and Bully Proof System:
Who is The Bully Doctor? Since 1999 The Bully Doctor has worked to stop bullying with students, parents, education officials, juvenile detention centers, civic groups, and other outreach efforts. He is the author of several books, has been a consultant on teen issues with the United States Department of Justice, MTV, the Sharon Osbourne Show, and seen on NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox News. After traveling to hundreds of schools and seeing firsthand the devastating effects bullying has on students, The Bully Doctor is committed to making sure the Bully Proof system is available for free to all students nationwide.

Aberdeen Film Festival To Debut Candlestick

Workbus Ltd. is delighted to announce that CANDLESTICK, the second feature from emerging filmmaker Christopher Presswell, is to make its debut at the Aberdeen Film Festival.

A stylish retro suspense thriller, CANDLESTICK tells of a social gathering rocked to its core when host Jack accuses his best friend’s wife of infidelity. But as the allegations start flying, it soon emerges that a far more sinister game is at play.

Channeling Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope and Dial M for Murder with its sinister protagonist and single location setting, CANDLESTICK is a stylized throwback to vintage 1950s cinema with a contemporary relevancy.

The film will receive its UK premiere on Wednesday 8th October at Cineworld Union Square as part of the inaugural Aberdeen Film Festival. Stars Andrew Fitch and Nigel Thomas, and director and co-writer Christopher Presswell are expected to attend.

Director Christopher Presswell comments: “I am delighted to be able to unleash the sinister twists and turns of CANDLESICK upon the people of Aberdeen. It feels only fitting that a film with such a strong British sense of identity should receive its UK debut at this exciting new festival.”

CANDLESTICK stars Andrew Fitch as mischievous host Jack, Isla Ure (BFI Future Film Nominee 2012, Red Dwarf X) as the alluring Vera, Nigel Thomas, and Tom Knight (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), alongside a supporting performance from Dan March (The Real MacGuffins, Pramface, Miranda).

26-year-old filmmaker Christopher Presswell directs his second feature from his screenplay, co-written with Hungarian screenwriter András Forgács. Director of photography Haider Zafar’s work on Vendetta was last year praised by leading critic Mark Kermode, and the film features a full orchestral score written by Jonathan Armandary, performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Aberdeen Film Festival runs from Saturday 4th October – Sunday 12th October 2014. CANDLESTICK is scheduled for a multi-platform release in the US in Spring 2015, with details of a UK release to follow.

    About Mirrelia:
Mirrelia was formed in 2010 with the clear vision to create a form of music that is unique in its delivery, honest in its message, and pure in its essence. The band draws influences from Pop, R&B, Jazz, Progressive Metal, and Hardcore to create an interesting sound that draws listeners in.

The band’s debut self-titled EP was released on October 15th, 2012 to local and international acclaim. From the post-hardcore reminiscent tinges on the opener “Brassdame” through the pop-rock influences on the first single “East of Eden”, to the overtly heavy tones in “Stray,” The self-titled EP was a collection and celebration of musical diversity and freedom. After two years, the band is back with their three song EP entitled The Actor. The EP serves as a sample of the band’s current sound before they record The Director later this year. The EP shows the band’s vast musical evolution in songwriting, as evidenced in the grandiose “Absences.” With a growing reputation as acclaimed song writers, and uncompromising live performers, the essence of Mirrelia is strong and embraced by audiences across Ontario. It’s A Magnificent Obsession

Take a journey into the creative minds of one of the most adventurous bands of today. The Rocktronix capture on film the birth and evolution of their band including in depth interviews, unedited rehearsal footage, live performances and a full length movie.

The Rocktronix came together for the NAMM Bass Bash in 2013. They are a collaborative project drawing from the vast experience of Joseph Patrick Moore on bass (Stewart Copleland, Earl Klugh, Colonel. Bruce Hampton), Wayne Viar on drums (David Crowder, Bo Bice from American Idol) and Chris Blackwell on guitars (Geoff Mcbride, Trina Braxton, Jennifer Holiday). The film gives viewers an inside track on marrying music, video and the art of life by musicians that have much to say. By recording Magnificent Obsession in three days, the resulting product stands out with bottomless improvisation and spontaneous expression of musical ideas.

The group’s chemistry is self-evident in The Magnificent Obsession Movie. Commenting on the powerful group dynamic, Mr. Moore says, “Music is a language. Without true collaboration, you’re just talking to yourself”. The movie shows the streaming of ideas between three veteran musicians and super-engineer Rush Anderson. Rush has worked in the studio or live with such superstars as Steve Morse (Deep Purple), Jimmy Herring (Widespread Panic) and jazz legend John McLaughlin (Miles Davis) to name a few. His vast experience and depth is palpable in the resulting tones and the quality of the production. His is a rare talent.

The diversity of the band’s vision is particularly evident in the full length video for the song “When I Become A Butterfly” and “The Calling” contained in the film. Aside from the band’s obvious classic rock influences, the evidence of classic alternative, electronica, jam band and even 60s era psychedelic rock. Rocktronix is a jazzy explosion of musical influences that just feels right. Magnificent Obsession the Movie grants the audience an opportunity to see how real collaboration comes together from embryonic ideas to aural and visual art.

We all have a story to tell…and this is one of obsession…a Magnificent Obsession.

    ABOUT ACIDIC:
ACIDIC’s fourth full-length 10-track album Copper Man, produced by multi-platinum award-winner John Ryan of Chicago Kid Productions (Styx, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers), earned them a distribution deal with SONY/RED via MegaForce Records. Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx named both the title track and “Drive Thru” “Sixx Picks of the Week” on his syndicated radio “Side Show.” Meanwhile, the hilarious, jawdroppingly-insane “Copper Man” video is nearing 1,000,000 views on Youtube! Critical raves continue to pour in for ACIDIC on CD and onstage. BLUERAIL.com: “Frontman Michael Gossard is a force of nature, connecting to his audience and his band mates in ways that make an ACIDIC show highly electrifying.” RUKUS magazine: “These guys aren’t afraid to rock out. Gossard can really wail with his vocal at times and the band is full of energy. They move all over the stage, enjoying every minute of every song they play.” PERFORMER magazine: “Straight from the get go, ACIDIC brings forth its frenetic energy and passionate sound in waves of indie alternative delight. This band brings the goods, with personality and flair unmatched in many West Coast bands.“

    If It Was My Band…

Emma Scott is more than just an award-winning radio presenter and live music promoter. She can now add accomplished author to her ever increasing resume. Emma has just released her second book “If It Was My Band…” with the aim of helping bands and musicians all over the world to break into the industry and/or further their music career.

“If It Was My Band…” contains hundreds of tips to help you increase your chance of success, and provides ideas of how to make money from your music as well as how to avoid wasting money in your quest for success. It’s written through the eyes of a musician and each tip starts with the words “If it was my band…” and so far has been empowering musicians all over the world with its vast knowledge of insider information and inspirational real life stories too. The book was born out of frustration as Emma came into contact with many musicians who didn’t seem to have a clue how to approach her for radio plays or gigs. She often felt herself saying “If it was my band I would never send an email like that…” or “If it was my band I’d never act like that at a gig..” and each time someone made some sort of mistake, Emma made a note of it and, after roughly 3 years of note-making, she had enough to fill an entire book that is rapidly becoming a how-to guide for any musician trying to make a name for themself.

The book is available now only via http://ifitwasmyband.bigcartel.com

Consider it the Bible for the Independent Musician!

Emma has taken a few of the tips from the book and explained each one in more detail here:

If it was my band I’d make sure we had a ‘band success plan’ (e.g. release two or three singles and an album each year over three years) and that each member of the band knew what it was, and agreed to it. Are we in the band ‘for a laugh’ or are we seriously trying to ‘make it’? We all have to be singing from the same song sheet. It’s a cliche, but it’s important.

In my opinion, having a good idea of where you’re going and planning the future of the band is the key at the start. Do as much research on as many music industry topics as you can and think about what you want to achieve from your music/band. There are a lot of bands that are in music as they just want to get drunk with their mates and they have no desire to be a success. On the other hand, there are other bands and artists that have a dream of success – so you need to make sure you have the right members in the band – that want the same thing – and get things straight before launching into the next three years of your life. Three years is a good amount of time to give yourselves for a musical project. Some may need more time to get things just right, so it’s important you are in a collective of musicians that will be sticking around til the end.

If it was my band I’d make sure we had a band calendar, so we all knew each others’ movements and availability to play live or attend radio interviews and sessions. There’s nothing worse than being offered a decent gig, but not knowing if we’re all free and if we take too long to reply, the gig slot may have gone.

This seems like such an obvious thing to do and is SO simple, but you wouldn’t believe the number of bands I’ve booked for a gig slot one day and then three days later I’m told the band can’t actually play as Johnny the drummer is on holiday on that date. By this time the gig promoter may have built a whole gig around you and your band, so by pulling out (even with a couple of months’ notice) you may have really annoyed that gig promoter and cause them a lot of hassle as they’ll need to start from scratch and then not bother considering your band again in the future. If there was a bit more organisation within each band, this will never happen and promoter’s will have an easier ride:-)

If it was my band I’d remember that people in the industry are really busy and we probably have around 30 seconds to impress them. We want them to hear our music straight away, rather than risk losing their attention by asking them to ‘like’ us, sign up to our mailing list or read through a 2000 word biography.

I’ve lost count of how many bands have missed out on good gigs or radio play because of this, so it’s an important point to make in the book. Again, a simple and obvious thing to put into practice, but not obvious to all – hence its inclusion in the book.

If it was my band I’d be aware that releasing a single and getting airplay for it will really help get the band’s name out there. We can reach far more people via radio play, than gigging all over the country, without even leaving the house.

I really wanted this important information to be included in the book as so many bands approach me for gigs “to get them exposure” but to get decent gigs it’s sometimes the fact that the band has a single out that’s getting radio airplay that will clinch them the show. Also, airplay gets the band exposure and gets them talked about all over the country (if they send their material out correctly to radio stations) so it’s a win-win situation. Release a good quality single and you’d have climbed several rungs of the industry ladder.

    and finally…

If it was my band I’d never get drunk and start posting on the band’s Facebook page.

Another no-brainer really, but I’ve seen some terrible examples over the years of p*ssed-up postings on social media and they’re not very beneficial to the band. Especially when you start slagging off DJ’s, promoter’s and other bands in those drunken rants! A real no-go for furthering your music career!

This is just a small selection of tips from the book. We have over 300 of them in total in various chapters – from starting out, getting gigs, building a buzz, achieving airplay, managing the band, playing live and making music a full time job. It really does encompass everything a band on the way up needs to know. Every one of the tips has been born from a real-life situation I’ve been involved in, so you know you can learn from others’ mistakes by reading If It Was My Band… and make sure you don’t mess up like others have done! You’ll love the illustrations too;-)

In addition to the tips, there are other ‘real life’ stories about other successful musicians’ to inspire you to keep going and keep pushing, because one day – it could be you!

I hope you enjoy the book.

First Listen: Eyes Of Mara – Pain and Fear

    eyesofmarajpg

Imminence Records’ Californian metal outfit Eyes Of Mara has announced that they will release their debut self-titled album October 28th. A year removed from their original Akkadia release, the band’s first full length shows ten tracks of a progressive new sound direction for Eyes Of Mara. Vocalist Tyler Trainer had this to say on the new direction, “With this record, we took a step back and really looked at the music we enjoy listening to and playing. We’ve all moved forward musically and wanted to bring all of our influences together to make something we thought was more true to us.”

In addition to announcing the release date for their full length, the band has also released the first single from the album on YouTube, entitled “Pain And Fear”. The track is the fourth track on the album and Tyler commented, “This song was the ideal choice for a lead single. It embodies most of the variation in the album and captures the intensity the rest of the record brings.” While the single showcases most of the new influences added to the band’s sound, listeners can be sure to be kept on their toes while listening to all ten tracks.

    About Eyes Of Mara:
In 2010, Eyes Of Mara came together as five musicians with a passion to write, record and perform heavy music. Taking their name from a Buddhist demon who is the embodiment of impulse and death, the name is fitting as their sound embraces the darker side of music. Eyes Of Mara draws their inspiration from the malevolence of mankind. Their songs hit on a wide variety of issues, including how humans treat each other and the decline of national politics. The band self released their debut EP Akkadia back at the end of 2013, and have no intention of stopping there. Having just signed with Imminence Records, the band plans to continue to raise their stock. Having worked tirelessly to bring their fans the best they have to offer, they strive for nothing short of perfection. They will utilize any opportunity to give their fans the hard hitting songs they desire in the form of new music, as well as live and in person when they are on tour. Eyes Of Mara breaks the mold as a major contender in today’s metal scene.

Guitarist & Best Selling Author Releases One-Man Guitar Jam

One-Man Guitar Jam is ranked as the #1 Hot New Guitar Release on Amazon.com. Once again, Nelson creates a unique approach to guitar instruction a first-ever lesson book on simultaneous performance of lead and rhythm guitar styles.

One-Man Guitar Jam looks to follow in the footsteps of Nelson’s other top-selling titles—Guitar Aerobics, Fretboard Freedom, and Rhythm Guitar 365—which have quickly become the go-to technique books for guitarists worldwide, garnering hundreds of 4- and 5-star reviews from happy players.

Learn the important art of self-accompaniment while soloing in blues, rock, jazz, country, and funk styles. Studying One-Man Guitar Jam will increase your ability to play chords and bass lines simultaneously, creating a robust, room-filling sound with just one person, rather than a full band. This title also covers scale and chord-voicing vocabulary, as well as rhythm, groove, and phrasing.

“The goal of One-Man Guitar Jam is to teach guitarists how to be self-sufficient. Instead of relying on a rhythm section, the guitarist will learn how to play rhythm and lead simultaneously. The book was a lot of fun to write, and I’m sure guitarists will have even more fun playing it!” says Nelson.

All titles are published by Milwaukee-based Hal Leonard Corporation, the largest print music publisher in the world. Accompanying music tracks, recorded by Nelson himself, are available for download or streaming at halleonard.com.

    About Troy Nelson:
Nelson began his guitar playing career in the small Wisconsin town of Viroqua, population 4,000. After months of begging his parents for an axe, he tapped into his savings account for a Harmony electric, a Fender Strat knockoff from the JC Penney catalogue. From that moment forward, Nelson would spend hours each day, much to his buddies’ dismay, woodshedding in his bedroom, playing everything from Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King to Dokken and Metallica.

“My friends would come to our front door on the weekends to ask me to hang out, and I’d say ‘no thanks’ and go back to my room to play guitar until dinner. Then, after dinner, I’d return to my room and play until my sister would bang on the wall to make me stop,” remembers Nelson.

Nelson attended Milwaukee Area Technical College, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Music. After freelancing for Hal Leonard Corporation, Nelson moved to New York City to be music editor, senior editor, and, finally, editor-in-chief of Guitar One, growing the magazine to the #2 guitar title in the world.

Following his time at Guitar One, Nelson took a detour from his music career to pursue his other passion, football, spending time with the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, All American Football League, Gardner-Webb University, and BLESTO, a football scouting coop owned by seven NFL teams.

Firmly refocused on music, Nelson currently lives in Music City itself, Nashville, Tennessee.

    Guitar Aerobics (2007)
    Fretboard Freedom (2013)
    Rhythm Guitar 365 (2014)

    Name Change for Langley

Langley released their debut EP entitled Love Becomes Life in March and have had a very successful year. They are currently nominated for New Artist of the Year at the 2014 AMG Heritages Awards, which will be held in November.

Although this is only their first year as a band, they have already experienced a myriad of opportunities, grown as musicians and songwriters, and also have even experienced some changes within the band lineup. These opportunities and changes have led the band to decide to change their name. As of today, Langley will now be known as Saints and Sound.

“After much prayerful contemplation, along a heavy amount of support and helpful input, we have decided on the name Saints and Sound. We believe it is the best fit for our mission, which is to take part in the worship of a transcendent God. Our worship as co-heirs with Christ is unified by the participation with the living body of Christ, the Church. The members of Saints and Sound seek to maintain the same musical excellence as before, and we pray our new name is embraced both by our current fans as well as those who have not yet heard our music.” – Daniel Frith, lead vocalist

Love Becomes Life, the debut Langley EP, will be redistributed with the new branding later this year. Saints and Sound are currently writing for their full-length album and are scheduled to begin recording in the winter of 2014-2015 with Verb Records, a division of Merit Music Group.

“Having worked with Daniel before, I am so excited to be back in the studio working on some of his new stuff. Just over the past year, I have seen Daniel grow exponentially in his music, not just in his writing, but in his voice as well, and I am looking forward to working with his band, Saints and Sounds, later this year.” – T.K. King, Co-owner of Verb Records
All social media, web content, and digital distribution will begin the rebranding process today, and full rebranding should be completed by the end of this fall. Follow all of the updates from the band’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/saintsandsound or their official website www.saintsandsound.com.

Emma Scott Lets You Know “If It Was My Band”

If it Was my Band… the new book from multi award-winning radio presenter, gig promoter and radio plugger, Emma Scott, with illustrations from Sydonia Aitken-Ballard, is available now.

Drawing upon her 25 years in the music industry, Emma shares insider information on the business with the aim of helping bands and musicians all over the world to break into the industry and/or further their music career.

Revealing the inner-workings of the music industry, If It Was My Band… is the ideal book to have if you’re planning a career in music. Amongst the hundreds of tips to help you increase your chance of success, the book provides ideas of how to make money from your music as well as how to avoid wasting money in your quest for success.

Over the years, Emma has interviewed bands at the beginning of their careers and seen them get signed, get big and, in some cases, get dropped again. Working on radio shows at stations like Kerrang! Radio, Power FM, Galaxy and Metro FM, she’s interviewed hundreds of artists of all genres, from Foo Fighters to Five Star, Bloc Party to Bad Boys Inc, Marillion to My Chemical Romance.

During her work as a TV and radio presenter, gig promoter, A & R manager at an independent record label and a radio plugger, Emma came into contact with thousands of musicians every year and it became apparent that many of them didn’t know how to talk to industry people and help show their music off in the best light – and ultimately make music their full time job.

There were so many times when Emma received a badly written email or worked with a badly behaved band at a gig that she found herself muttering the words, “If it was MY band I wouldn’t write an email like that or act like that…” and she started making notes every time she came across clueless or bad behaviour. Before she knew it, she had another book on her hands.

Nearly two years later, the characters from the book (band members, a band manager, music lawyer, fan-girl, DJ and punk rocker) and Emma’s words have finally become one and the result is stunning! Simple to understand and easy to read, If It Was My Band has been brought to life by Awkward Illustration’s Sydonia Aitken-Ballard, who Emma approached after seeing Syd’s “Rock Bunny” design.

Chapters include Starting Out, Getting Gigs, Building a Buzz, How to Manage the Band and Making Music a Full Time Job. There’s a handy glossary of industry terms and helpful contacts as well as a “checklist for success” which any musician can go through and tick boxes off as they achieve each new step. Written through the eyes of a band member, each point made in the book comes from a real-life situation that Emma has experienced.

With over 300 points in the book as well as inspirational stories and facts about U2, The Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Biffy Clyro, David Guetta, Paolo Nutini, Elbow, Snow Patrol, and Oasis, together with quotes from Kurt Cobain, Jon Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne, Mick Jagger and Paul Weller, If It Was My Band… is the compass and the map to help any aspiring musician.

Emma says: ‘By reading this book, musicians will get to learn from other people’s mistakes and pick up hundreds of tips along the way – I’m really proud of it!”
