Dum Dum Girls Announce Fall North American Tour in Support “Too True”

Dum Dum Girls have scheduled a North American fall tour in support of Too True, their critically acclaimed 3rd album on Sub Pop. The tour begins October 19th in Denver, CO at Larimer Lounge and ends November 15th in Pioneertown, CA at Pappy & Harriets, Preceding the tour, Dum Dum Girls have scheduled a few festival appearances including Saturday August 2nd in Santa Ana, CA at the Observatory for Burger A-Go-Go, August 9th in San Francisco, CA at Outside Lands, and September 20th in Denver, CO at Riot Fest. Please find a complete list of tour dates below.

Dum Dum Girls Too True is available now on CD/LP/DL from Sub Pop. The album lead by the singles & videos for “Lost Boys And Girls Club,” “Too True To Be Good,” “Are You Okay,” and “Under The Hands, was produced by Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go’s, Richard Hell), Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) and engineered by Alonzo Vargas at East West Studios in Los Angeles and The Coven in New York City.

What people are saying about Too True:
Dum Dum Girls continue to explore a sonic and formal intersection of the early 1960s — girl groups, surf-rock, garage-rock — and the post-punk 1980s of the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. A few chords, a clear melody and succinct verse-chorus-bridge structures are filled with darkly allusive lyrics and floated amid gauzy, sweeping guitar effects. It’s a roomy concept, encompassing spaghetti western guitar touches in “Cult of Love,” new wave momentum in “Little Minx,” stately folk-rock in “Under These Hands,” a weighty undertow in “Lost Boys and Girls Club” and a celestial serenity in “Trouble Is My Name.” – [Critics Choice] New York Times

“Penny’s songs are no less quotable for their simplicity, whether she’s name-checking 19th-century poet Arthur Rimbaud (“Rimbaud Eyes”), fitting the album’s title into the chorus of “Too True to Be Good” or dispensing a perfect goth-pop mission statement in “Evil Blooms”: “Why be good? Be beautiful and sad.” On Too True, Penny and Dum Dum Girls need barely 30 minutes to prove that a band can be all three at once.” [First Listen] – NPR Music

“.. This album is the perfect-pop balance of cliché and rawness, with mythic ambition and songs that make you a three-minute hero.” [4 / 5 Stars] – MOJO

“Sleek and sophisticated, this third full-length careens from muscular blasts of ’80s guitar rock (“In the Wake of You”) to spectral ballads (“Are You Okay?”). Penny writes hits even if they never become that. Songs like “Too True to Be Good” and “Rimbaud Eyes” are meant to be blared from car radios with the windows down; they’re perfect. – Boston Globe

“Songs like “Rimbaud Eyes” and “Evil Blooms” more than live up to their fashion-goth titles. But Penny is best opening up her sound on big, searching ballads like “Lost Boys and Girls Club,” where sad Madonna hangs with the Jesus and Mary Chain, or the Chrissie Hynde-worthy weeper “Are You Okay?” where Penny wanders in a “lavender haze” (“I’m reckless at night/I’m sorry for days”), wearing boozy misery like a black-leather security blanket.” [3.5/5 Stars] – Rolling Stone
“Too True is a bold album, with Dee Dee backed by huge swelling guitars on a series of resoundingly anthemic and unashamedly 80s sounding tracks.” [8 / 10] – Uncut

Daily Dose: Odyssey, Inc – Addicted to You

We are Odyssey, Inc., an alternative rock band based out of Loris, SC. By channeling the influence of great groups long past, our goal is to create original music others will enjoy, that simultaneously buoys the current standards of the industry.

The band was formed in January, 2012 at Coastal Carolina University by Jordan Small, and Brandon Kirsch. Both computer science majors, they realized they were on the wrong path when they spent all spare time composing songs in the dorm room. The next year was spent mostly honing the craft and generating more material. Eventually, they met Matt Skipper while all three were employed by Papa John’s Pizza. Coincidentally, Matt had also attended Coastal, though his focus was on guitar.

This became highly evident when they heard his playing, and he was invited to join the group. The band then focused on creating rough demos, utilizing the iPhone GarageBand app to its fullest potential. Flash forward to the beginning of Summer 2014. After compiling a demo tape of several songs, the band began to look for recording studios to take things to the next level. A quick Google search later, they found themselves at Southwood Recording Studio, owned by Mitch Todd of Nashville fame. After hearing the tape, he was convinced that the tunes he was hearing were of high quality, and had a new sound.

This attracted the attention of local drummer and North Myrtle Beach Police officer Mike Boyd, an associate of Mitch’s. Due to a previous brush with fame, Mike saw that the band had the needed qualities to succeed. The current lineup was achieved. Since then, the band has been diligently hitting the studio, focusing all effort on producing the greatest songs possible. The included attachments are our first two releases, “Addicted to You” and “They’re Wrong.” We’d like to think the music speaks for itself. We have several more in progress, just not mastered.

Embracer Enters Studio with Matt Malpass Beginning Friday

Imminence Records are pleased to announce that they have signed West Virginian indie rock/post-hardcore outfit Embracer. From their conception as a hardcore band and through numerous lineup, members’ role, and stylistic changes; Embracer has matured and developed drastically to what they are now. They now encompass a broad range of stylistic influences from Circa Survive and Balance and Composure to Johnny Cash and Miles Davis.Guitarist Ryan Pullin had this to say on the signing, “We are very excited to announce our signing with Imminence Records because we feel that our creativity will not be limited by any expectations set by our label. Having support from a label like Imminence Records will allow us to continue to grow, and allow us to continue to pursue our passions for making and performing music.”

The band will be in Atlanta starting Friday to begin work on their label debut. The record will be recorded by Matt Malpass who has worked with such artists as Dance Gavin Dance, Hey Monday, Relient K, and Manchester Orchestra. Embracer takes an open-minded approach to their music, refusing to let boundaries set by genres or expectations to limit what takes part in the songwriting process with Ryan Pullin commenting, “We believe that music can be a therapy, a crutch, an ecstasy, or an escape for people. It’s one thing to be able to live a passion and do what you want for yourself, but knowing that we will be encouraged to continue to create music that will reach out to our audiences makes it truly worth it.”

    About Embracer:
Embracer is an indie rock/post-hardcore focused in Charleston, WV. From their conception as a hardcore band and through numerous lineup, members’ role, and stylistic changes, Embracer has matured and developed drastically to what they are now. Embracer has incorporated a vastly broader range of stylistic influences from modern rock bands like Circa Survive, Polyneso, Balance and Composure, and This Will Destroy You to even older, much different stylistic influences such as Johnny Cash and Miles Davis. Embracer takes an open-minded approach to their music, refusing to let boundaries set by genres or expectations to limit what takes part in the songwriting process.

In the December of 2010, Embracer formed in Hurricane, WV under the name of “World Famous.” When Zak Rea, the lead songwriter, left and whose place was taken by Jordan Bradley, the style of influence began to change dramatically as more outside influences from the other band members began to flow into the song writing process, though the melodic hardcore style stayed, although for not much longer. In August of 2011, World Famous changed its name to Embracer along with the release of the Dreamers EP, a six-track melodic hardcore EP recorded, mixed, and mastered by Brette Ciamarra of 344 Studios.

Embracer has faced numerous line-up changes since 2011 and a complete overhaul on not only the style but structure of the songwriting process. From founding members departing to lead roles changing, there has been much growth in multiple directions. With a struggling to virtually non-existent modern and developing music scene in the Charleston, WV area, Embracer has had to remain extremely persistent over the past four years to grow. With the upcoming recording of Embracer’s debut album My Father’s Will with the renowned Matt Malpass, this album could potentially be a cornerstone for the forward progress of Embracer.

Daily Dose: Ted Z and the Wranglers – Afraid of Dying

    tedzwranglers

Ted Z and the Wranglers, of Southern California, deliver heartfelt ballads and gritty grassroots rock ‘n’ roll with a cowboy kick. Their folky story-telling songs convey themes of love, politics, environmentalism, childhood imagination, and the rawness of humanity.

The concept of the band came to Ali “Ted” Zakka (lead singer, guitarist, former bassist of Handsome G) in a burst of songwriting during a break from his old band. Ali called upon old friends Mike Layton (guitar, harmonica) and Professor Dan Mages (bass), and enlisted Mike Myers (drums, harmony vocals) to complete the new group. Layton now shares lead guitar duties for The Wranglers with the multi-talented musician and music teacher Rob Torres and the newest addition, Guitar Center blues competition titleholder Jackson Leverone.

Together, these players meld Southwestern romanticism, cultural awareness, and rollicking good times to get audiences dancing and leave them hungry for more.

Check out Drawcard’s New Single + Tour Info

Rock/Punk Party-Starters Drawcard announced their tour and unleashed their new single KIDS last month, and now on the verge of heading out on tour down the East Coast of Australia, they have released the filmclip for the belting track.

The clip is high-energy and up-in-your-face showcases the band’s stage presence, a take-no-prisoners show that doesn’t let up until the last chord is struck, filmed in their rehearsal room and put together by the band and Thomas Coutts.

On the eve of their tour kicking off, Drawcard has been enjoying love from all over – triple j’s Home and Hosed and Short Fast Loud, as well as Triple M’s Homegrown show and being added to US radio station rotation on New Driven Radio and the Oz tour has been touted by Tone Deaf as 1 of 5 Do Not Miss Tours in August.

Drawcard are all about the following: Tasty melodies, killer riffs, catchy choruses and thought provoking lyrics. This means that there are often crazy gyrating bodies on the dancefloor and being thrown across the stage. To sum up – all members in Drawcard have Bachelor’s Degrees in “Tumultuous Partying” and a sheer knack for writing catchy melody laden post punk rock anthems.

‘Kids’ is a cracking song about wishing for simpler times “when we were kids.” It’s an upbeat, nostalgic track that doesn’t let up until the final chord has been struck. Drawcard’s frontman, Paul Durkin’s vocal hook anchors the chorus of the track and defies anyone to get it out of their head.

The tour takes themfrom their Hometown of Maroochydore, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Bendigo.

Proving that they have what it takes time and time again, they have shared the stage with the likes of Taking Back Sunday, Unwritten Law, Grinspoon, Guttermouth, Birds of Tokyo, Parkway Drive, Dead Letter Circus, Dallas Frasca, Closure in Moscow and the list goes on! Two singles off their sophomore 5 track EP debuted at No.4 and No.5 in the AMRAP Australian Independent Music Charts and remained in the Top 10 for 3 weeks alongside artists including Children Collide, The Temper Trap and Hilltop Hoods PLUS their debut album was mixed by Sylvia Massy (TOOL, Red Hot Chili Peppers, COG) in California and is distributed nationally in the U.S. and Canada with SONY Red.

Teenage Wildlife – The Last Great Love Affair

Although John Wright has been making music “forever”, it was through his career in filmmaking and photography, regularly working with world famous musicians, that he received the encouragement he needed to launch his own project: TEENAGE WILDLIFE.

Based in Shoreditch and citing influences such as Van Morrison and Curtis Mayfield, John is a multi-instrumentalist who plays and records drums, bass, guitar and keys. Merging these traditional sounds with ideas sketched on mobile devices and blending samples to create shimmering sonic backdrops across an impressive range of genres, John’s back catalogue boasts impressive examples of hip hop, dance and melodic dub. All his material is recorded in his attic studio where he produces and masters his own work, gathering fans through social networking.

Although John has created tracks that have appeared on fashion films for Fendi and Dior as well as working photographically with Louis Vuitton, Dior, GQ, Vanity Fair and Sony Music, it’s his background that remains a driving force. “I had a pretty rough upbringing” he explains. “I think the term is ‘underprivileged’. I designed Teenage Wildlife as a vehicle to express myself musically and to use funds I raise through it to support charities that help underprivileged young people.”

Teenage Wildlife’s ‘The Last Great Love Affair’ and AA side ‘Most Beautiful Thing’ are released on Monday September 1st.

Naylor’s Notes: Blues Man Sam Myers

    Naylor’s Notes:
A mountain of a man tip toes across the stage.  Anson Funderburgh, from, “Anson Funderburgh, and The Rockets.” standing to his right hand side.  The Blues ring out through the crowd, as they start to move with the music.  Wearing big bulky eye glasses due to the fact that he was legally blind, and a custom-made leather harp holder specially made for the man himself, “Sam Myers.”

Looking back on the life of Sam Myers, is a well-known St. Louis, MO., blues artist named, Buffalo Bob.  As seen here in the center of the legendary blues man himself, Sam Myers, and his right hand man, Anson Funderburgh.  Buffalo Bob, is still active these days hosting a St. Louis, MO.  Jam session at, “Backstreet Jazz & Blues Club,” every Sunday Night from 9 – 11:30 pm., Here, have a look for yourself.

    playing’ dat cross roads… 2013
Buffalo Bob, among many other well-known artist’s has opened for Sam Myers, and Anson Funderburgh, numerous times at many St. Louis, MO., Concert Venues, and says, ” Man I always had a great time with old Sam Myers.”  And I quote, “He tip toed across the stage because he was blind as a bat.”  “Sometimes he would bite the microphone before he found his hot spot on the stage.”

This didn’t happen very often but his power behind the microphone would surely make up for it. Go on and have a look for yourself.  Before you click play, take a moment of silence for this legendary blues man, as he was born in February, 1936.  He died on 7/17/2006, due to a throat cancer operation that had complications.  Help us keep his music alive.

No Devotion to the Past: A New Beginning

Lee Gaze has made it official in a statement he made to NME about the music of his former band, Lostprophets. ” We’d definitely never play the songs again… I don’t think we’d ever revisit anything.” And that very much appears to be the case as of this writing. Please welcome to the stage No Devotion. From what it looks like, the band have no intention of revisiting the past whatsoever. Having regrouped after taking a couple of years out of the spotlight, the former members of Lostprophets merged with current United Nations and former Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly to for No Devotion. Having signed to Rickly’s own label, Collection Records, the band put out a single, “Stay”, on July 1st.

    Ian Watkins
    Former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins.

Considering that less than a year ago the five remaining members of Lostprophets all considered getting out of the music business entirely, this could not only be considered a comeback, but a triumphant return to form. Considering all of the vile things Ian Watkins, former lead singer of Lostprophets who failed at his appeal for Child Molestation charges two days ago after pleading to multiple counts pf sexual assault against children and other charges involving taking and possessing sexual images of minors, some as young as a year old, had done and dragging the Lostprophets name through the mud and, to an extent, the other members reputations as well, this could not be a better time to reinvent themselves. And this is more than a mere reinvention. Take a listen to their first single below and you will see that they sound nothing like their former selves. This is an entirely new band.

No Devotion has just wrapped up a 4 date tour around the United Kingdom. The band’s first live performances received positive reviews from critics and fans despite revealed that they would not be playing any music from the Lostprophets discography.

No Devotion will enter the studio later this year with a full album to be released some time in 2015.

Allusondrugs formed in 2012 in West Yorkshire when Jason Moules (Vocals), Drey Pavlovic (Guitar), Damo Hughes (Guitar/Vocals/Effects), Jemal Malki (Bass) and Connor Fisher-Atack (Drums) came together after meeting on the Leeds music scene. Influenced by Nirvana, Deftones, My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth and known for their blisteringly intense guitar rock sound, the band have attracted national press attention and a huge following of fans who are drawn to their captivating live performances.

The Allusondrugs EP was recorded and produced in one week at Greenmount Studios in Armley, Leeds. The record was tracked live to analogue tape as band members performed together in one room. Although additional overdubs and vocals were added complete the tracks, the core of the recording was done live in an attempt to capture the band’s energy on record.

First Listen: The Sons – “I’m Not Happy”

    The Sons
    The Sons
    The Sons

The Sons, an independent British five piece from Derby, draw inspiration for their alternative guitar pop from the likes of Crowded House, Wilco, Paul Simon and Fleetwood Mac, to create a current sound with a timeless feel.

They are masters at coupling upbeat, catchy songs with rather dark, complex lyrics about the pains and hardships of life. Having toured the UK & Europe extensively, The Sons have attracted a large and a very loyal following with fans fully funding the making of the band’s third studio album, ‘Heading Into Land’. This record hit the UK album charts upon its release in March 2014, marking a new chapter for the band.

The premiere single from the album, ‘Death Love Money’ was released in January 2014. The video received 20,000 views within a week of release and Sony then chose the band as a feature artist for their Xperia Lounge app. The Sons have been featured on BBC Radio’s ‘Introducing’, chosen as Tuborg’s ‘Spotlight Artist to Watch’ and included on Jonathan L’s list of ‘Ones to Watch in 2014’.

Brody Ramone: The Art of Putting Dirty Glitter in Your Ears

Brody Ramone is someone you should never take lightly, or with a grain of salt. You should take her with glitter. Dirty Glitter to be exact. And Dirty Glitter is the name of her show. This lady has really taken the independent and unsigned genres by storm and transformed herself into a voice for the underground.

Having recently been crowned as the winner of the IRF 2013 “Best US/Canada Campus Radio Contest”, Brody has since proven time and time again that she can not only put the best of the best in unsigned music in your ears but fill it with Dirty Glitter as well.

By no strange coincidence, she is up for the award again this year. You can vote on her by going to:

    http://www.mixcloud.com/onlineradioawards and do the following:

    1:Type in your name

2:your email address (don’t worry, they are not going to spam you!)

3:click on the indie category and enter the following url: http://mixcloud.com/djbrodyramone

With her show, Dirty Glitter, airing on JammerStream One every Wednesday and Saturday @ Noon and 9PM US Eastern Daylight Time beginning July 30th, we thought it would be a good time to get to know Brody and all things Glitter.

    JammerZine
So Brody, tell us how you got your start in Radio?

    Brody Ramone
I initially got my start in radio when I was fresh out of high school. I got a gig at a prominent broadcasting company here in the state and worked in their advertising department and also did voice work for commercials as well as promotions. Music has always been a passion of mine and having that gig for six years further confirmed I wanted to work in the industry.

    JammerZine
How did you come up with the format for Dirty Glitter?

    Brody
Format…ugh I loathe the meaning behind that word! True, I play new and vintage indie, punk and electro on my show but it changes from broadcast to broadcast. One week it may be more indie rock oriented and the next may be more mellow and laid back. It really depends on my mood when I make the playlist!

    JammerZine
How are you able to keep Dirty Glitter so fun every week given your schedule?

    Brody
My schedule…ugh! Being syndicated in three markets, freelancing as a Music Contributor for an online magazine, working on voiceovers for movies and commercials, as well as, maintaining and updating my weekly blog, all while working a full time gig definitely can be hectic. Hell, I’m just tired and overwhelmed thinking about it as I described it to you, haha! I use my shows as an outlet and focus all of the crazy high strung energy into making each show the best it possibly can be! I like being able to connect with my listeners and know that I am delivering a quality broadcast each and every time they tune in! Afterall, Dirty Glitter is where people tune in to find their next favorite band, so I have to make it good!

    JammerZine
It looks like you tailor your show for the station. If there is any, what will be the difference between the JammerStream Dirty Glitter from the other editions?

    Brody
The JammerStream edition of Dirty Glitter is going to stay somewhat the same but will have an exclusive feature of JammerZine bands and artists. This is where I will feature bands and artists that can be found on Jammer Direct’s jammerzine.com.

When I created the concept of Dirty Glitter, the concept was, and still is: to create a show that would liberate your ears from the tyranny of processed pop.

For me it’s all about having a bit of an edge, laced with some attitude. Music will always be a creative culture where people can express how they really see the world. I allow under-represented bands a way to blast their voice and to start a worldwide revolution. I want to get in the people’s faces in the best possible way and remind them exactly what these bands are capable of.

    JammerZine
Who are the best bands you’ve ever had on your show and why?

    Brody
Imagine Dragons…BEFORE they became a household name. I interview bands on my show often and have recently decided to feature future interviews on my blog as I really want my show to be more on the music. If listeners dig the music they can go to my blog and learn more about the artists and musicians that way.

    JammerZine
I love how animated you are on the show. How much of you is in the show versus a character?

    Brody
Character?! Baby, it’s all me! I am naturally goofy and outgoing. I don’t believe in being something I’m not. If you like me, great. If you don’t…well, ya know.

    JammerZine
Thank you for thinking Jammer Direct was a good fit for Dirty Glitter. What exactly did you see in us that you liked?

    Brody
I like how Jammer Direct represents the music. The overall presentation and drive of the on air staff is something that really hits home for me. I like genuine, passionate people and only surround myself with who are as driven and dedicated to the cause as I am.

    JammerZine
Last September you won the International Radio Festival (IRF) in Zurich, Switzerland. How did that come about and what did you learn from being in the competition?

    Brody
It was a mere coincidence that I discovered the contest in the first place. The year before I was at CMJ in NYC and heard about it but missed the entry date by a day! The following year I randomly saw a tweet about the opportunity and signed up for it immediately! The competition was based on not only listener votes, but also by a panel of industry professionals who judged on presentation, content, level of engagement, how you marketed the program, and etc. It was pretty intense!

Having the opportunity to produce and broadcast Dirty Glitter in a room full of a few hundred industry professionals was a little un-nerving, but holy cats what a great time! Not only did I learn various ways to market my show and build my listeners, but I also walked away with a syndication deal with a station out of the UK! I am forever grateful for my listeners, who helped me by voting and getting the word out there on the competition. THEY make Dirty Glitter what it is. If it weren’t for them NONE of what I have accomplished in the past year would have been possible!

    JammerZine
What was it like being in Zurich and being, not only nominated, but being recognized as someone to respect amongst your peers?

    Brody
It was such a surreal experience. The event was hosted at the Schloss Silhberg castle, (yes, a freaking castle!) in Zurich. There were Grammy award winning DJs as well as top music executives to syndicated DJs at the event…and then there was ME! Having executives and other influencers in the industry compliment me on my show was such an amazing moment. The event definitely allowed Dirty Glitter to be seen and heard by people who normally wouldn’t have given it a listen. But by winning, this was a way for me to make as much noise as possible and giving them no other reason but to listen- IT.WAS.GREAT.

    JammerZine
You could very well be nominated again! How can people get the word out and vote for you?

    Brody
Voting for me to appear again at the event is SUPER simple and takes less than 10 seconds! All you have to do is visit my blog at brodyramone.blogspot.com for full details.

If you love indie music and are as passionate as I am about it I encourage you to vote and spread the word on Twitter as well as Facebook! Voting officially ends on Tuesday, July 29th at 9p EST!

    JammerZine
Being on both terrestrial radio as well as internet based stations like JammerStream One, what do you feel are the fundamental differences between the two formats and how do you think both have changed over the last few years?

    Brody
Great question! Terrestrial radio, in my opinion, is limited in the kind of content you can present and is also subjected to advertisers and etc so sticking to a “time clock” can sometimes kill a mood when cutting to a 5 or 6 minute commercial break. Online exclusive based programming allows for more creative freedom not only in content but on a time matter as well. Broadcasting online allows for more exposure in the sense that stations like Jammer Direct will not get lost among the static of a larger platform that hosts millions of radio stations that are mainly terrestrial based.

Don’t get me wrong, I admire both types of broadcasts and both have equally evolved over the last few years. With technology it is easier than ever to take your favorite DJ with you and jam out while fighting ninjas during your morning commute, while doing laundry, at the grocery, and etc.

    JammerZine
With terrestrial stations making the leap into streaming and internet based radio getting more and more into on demand content, how do you see the industry as a whole from a DJ’s perspective?

    Brody
First things first- I LOVE this industry. There is so much potential for innovation and growth. I’m a firm believer innovation is the key to evolution for anything. It’s all about creativity and connecting with your fans. There are a gazillion radio stations you can tune in to at any given moment…and it is the job of the station and its on air talent to entertain you- leaving you breathless and wanting…almost craving for more. That’s what every station and on air personality should strive for- at least in my opinion.

    JammerZine
Jammer Direct’s official tagline is “The Evolution of Revolution”. What is the next step in your evolution of revolution?

    Brody
If I told you that, I’d have to kill you.

    Haha!!!

Al Walser: The Diagnosis is OCD

Whether you were for or against Al Walser’s Grammy nomination in 2013 in the Best EDM category for his song, “I Can’t Live Without You”, one thing is for certain. Al Walser keeps pushing forward. After modifying his weekly syndicated show, “Al Walser’s Weekly Top 20”, heard right here on JammerStream One every Friday and Saturday at 10 and 10 US EDT, he has taken that very same liberty with his own music. With his last few releases such as “I Want My Money Now”, this transition has come to fruition with his latest single, “OCD”. Or has it? One thing is for sure. Al Walser will forever be evolving as an artist.

Check out his song “OCD (The Illustration of OCD)” below. And for a little insight and possibly inspiration for this song, check out this article on the website Calm Down Mind.

Al Walser’s show airs every Friday and Saturday on Jammer Direct’s own radio station, JammerStream One at 10AM and 10PM US EDT.

First Listen: Band of Holy Joy – A Place Called Home

A big city pop song of tradition and place lost in the shiny new urban world of market forces, rising rents and social cleansing.

Following their release of Irvine Welsh’s “favourite album of the year so far” the stunning ‘Easy Listening’ , an album that earned the band glowing reviews in The Daily Mirror, Mojo and The Wire amongst others, Band of Holy Joy return with this beautiful fifties-esque ballad examining the contemporary concept of home in the inner city.

BAND OF HOLY JOY – Forever changing, consistently unique yet, always somehow the same, the Band Of Holy Joy began life as gutter chansoniers using junk shop instruments to propagate a brute romantic madly literate form of dispossessed urban folk music.

Since then the band have scaled a few heights fallen down in one or two gutters, broken up, glued themselves together, toured the world, released a fair few albums for the likes of Rough Trade and fully explored other media by presenting two audio visual song plays: Troubled Sleep at the Shunt Theatre in London 2008 and an Invocation for William Burroughs at the Sorbonne Paris in 2009. They have also set up their own label and Internet radio station Radio Joy.

These days the junk shop instruments of old are long gone, and guitars, violins and visuals very much to the fore. But the band continues to write about the same outsider concerns with the same measure of spirit and care and man, they still put on a show!

The Band of Holy Joy – forever changing, consistently unique, yet always somehow the same. Join the adventure as they pass through your town.

Video: Selby Green – Rip it Up (Live Version)

We are a 3 piece, groove based, rock and roll band currently residing in Leeds. Our main objective is to get on that stage and get the crowd jumping from start to finish.

We have wide ranging influences Blues, Soul, Rock, Metal also a bit of Rap and Dance using these to write grooves and beats to keep our fans bouncing.

We have a 2 song demo ‘Rip it Up’ which is available at the links below. This is the first time we have recorded and mixed the whole thing ourselves at the home studio, hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed doing it . We have a live video of ‘Rip it Up’ available on the home page and YouTube as well as a summer and winter full of gigs for people to come and enjoy.

We have had some amazing nights in the past namely the packed out gigs we did at The Well, Leeds which has sadly closed down now. One of these gigs was an Oxjam event we arranged ourselves involving other great bands from the area.
Doing the ‘Ontsofa’ session (a YouTube channel with over 1 million suscribers) and going on the BBC introducing radio station were also great experiences.

There’s a lot more to come for the future, hope to have you along for the ride.

The Acfields release touching video for ‘Grabbed You By the Heart’

Dan and Hannah Acfield have released their stunning filmclip for their recent single ‘Grabbed me by the Heart’, a heart warming folky piece that could delve into even the most untouchable of souls.

The Acfields – who are Brother and Sister duo Dan and Hannah, live in two different corners of Australia – Brisbane and Melbourne. That doesn’t stop them from writing, recording, rehearsing and playing music together as well as co-ordinating and overseeing the production of this new clip. They collaborated with the creator of the clip, Asher Floyd – who shot, edited and produced it.

The duo recorded the single at a friend’s house on the Mornington Peninsula and returned to the house while on tour in June to create the filmclip and in the local surrounds.

The filmclip and the song hold different meanings to the two siblings, but both have very sentimental attachments to the track and therefore putting a visual look to the song was very important.

Dan reminisced about the writing of the song, saying that “…it’s actually a song saying goodbye and being thankful for time that could be spent together over the years. Specifically, written by me for our paternal grandmother and less directly our maternal grandfather – both got dementia and passed away at a similar time. It was never a song that I intended to release let alone make into a single because it is so personal and just me dealing with some grief but people tended to connect with it.”

Hannah said it was a song that needed great care when crafting the clip as it has such emotional importance to the pair. “The film clip takes the story in a more general direction with some deviations, but the theme of nostalgia and gratitude for meaningful relationships is still there. It’s about the different relationships we experience. Friendship, working relationships, romantic etc. The two children are meant to be cousins. The two women in the garden – it’s a working relationship and the importance of kindness. The older couple are looking nostalgically over their life. The dancers aren’t necessarily romantically involved but could be. It’s about making the most of any relationship!”

Both halves of the all-singing, all-songwriting pair are accomplished tourers and performers. They have embarked on multiple national tours of their own, playing and supported acts such as Josh Pyke, The Trouble With Templeton, Holy Holy, Stu Larsen and Vika & Linda Bull.
