L.A. Movie Awards Gets a Deadly Revision

Gregory Blair’s slow-burn, psychological thriller DEADLY REVISIONS has been selected to screen at the L.A. Movie Awards Fall 2014 festival, having won the award for “Best Narrative Feature” as well as the Award for “Best Actor” for lead Bill Oberst, Jr. This is the second and third award for the film which earlier won the EOTM Award for “Best Director of an Indie Horror Film”.

“It’s very exciting,” Blair says. “We just found out about the awards and the screening and it’s only a little over a week away!”

In the film, Oberst, Jr. plays Grafton Torn—an amnesiac horror film writer for whom hypnotherapy and nightmares reveal terrifying images that just can’t be real. Or can they? As scripts write themselves, hatchets appear and disappear and people end up dead, Grafton begins to wonder…as does the audience.

“I’m especially thrilled that Bill is getting noticed for his work in the film,” Blair says. “We spent a lot of time talking about the character and how his journey had to be the audience’s journey…to a point; but that they would begin seeing him as an unreliable narrator and then watch him from an entirely different angle. It was a tricky thing to pull off and I think Bill did so masterfully. I’m glad to see others agree.”

DEADLY REVISIONS will screen in Block 5 of the L.A. Movie Awards in Hollywood, CA on September 27th 2014 at the Actors Company Theater (916a N. Formosa Ave., Hollywood CA 90046). Award presentations and a Q & A session will follow the screening. Tickets are available here: http://www.thelamovieawards.com/Tickets.html

So get tickets to the screening of your choice and come see what all the screaming is about! 🙂

Chicago’s MC Siah Talks ChiTown Rap Music, Ambition, Talent, and Creativity

Skymeechi A. Clark is a highly trained school bus driver by day, which in itself is a peaceful assurance to the parents of the children who entrust him to get the little ones off to school, and back home, safely. But by night he becomes MC Siah, the Chicago born Writer, Rapper, Performer Extraordinaire.

“Anyone who knows me, knows I am the biggest fan of music itself, as a whole. I like all genres, artists, and musicians. Kendrick Lamar who has ‘off the charts’ delivery and intense verbal aggression makes me always want to write new material, I can’t really say that about many other new-comers, of today. I have mad respect for him. Though my personal dream rap duel/duet would have to include the late and great ‪2Pac, a kind of project like that could only happen by a miracle. From where I stand though, give me T.I., LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane Nas, Eminem, or Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, any day. They are the top Legendary Artists who I will always look up to, with mad love, truest admiration, and respect. A collaboration is never too much to hope for especially considering that I would hop a flight to anywhere, literally tomorrow morning, to meet them should I even hear talk of any them yet wanting to work with me. Never will I shy away from working with the greats, they are indeed ‘great’ for a reason.”

” I have had my share of musical collaborations with some of the very best up and coming artists of my time; singers Timothy Benson and his brother Matt B., singer J-Rome, rappers Young Veteran aka Young Vet, Rayilla, Seven Letters, and so on. I know we will be working together again, very soon.”

“The bottom line is this: I’m always very serious about my music – I mean, you do have those times when there is a fun vibe in the studio, but more often than not, it’s really serious work. I put 110% of myself in every single song that I write. Before I hit the studio, I can guarantee you that I have revised, rewritten, and gone over my song more than a just few times, ‘Ya-dig? As a recent case in point, I have had the extreme pleasure of working with an organization by the name of ‘The Happiness Club’, known around here simplly as T.H.C. I helped by teaching the values of good stage presence, proper mic etiquette, and efficient studio/time performance. I also wrote and donated a song entitled “World On My Shoulder” which debuted at the annual Taste of Chicago held in Millennium Park – and is played every summer. I was (and am) deeply honored by that”.

“I actually got paid by an organization called ‘Song Writing and Producing’ which is affiliated with the After School Matters youth program. At the time I couldn’t believe I was paid to write, rap, and sing which was and is my passion and my life. I co-wrote two songs, one of which became the programs’ break-out’ song entitled “Street Life” [off of the album Concrete Voice] with Timothy Benson, J-Rome, Eric Walker and the 2004/2005 Chicago Idol Justin Butler.”

Can you tell us what is the secret to the unique sound you create, the message you convey, and that special feeling behind your music? Many feel that it’s beyond just truth, but that it’s almost necessary truth. You really do know how to capture your listers attention in your writing… How do you do it?

“The truest secret I know is letting the music guide your words, and let the words connect the message (that you want to convey) to your listeners. It is 100% necessary to be true to yourself, and to what you do, without caring as to what the current ‘trends’ are. You must be able to both blend in, but still stand out, while never forgetting who you are and what the purpose of the song really is. Whether you are a singer or rapper/lyricist you must stay true to you, and dust them haters off. If we were all meant to sound alike then there would not be any difference in Hip Hop, Rap, Jazz, Gospel, R&B, etc”.

What is unique about MC Siah is not only his seemingly endless and somewhat effortless talent as a musician, songwriter, and performer, but his humble and kind manner when speaking. He feels he owes his hometown of SouthSide Chicago, the warmest embrace, for that is where he learned the rules and lessons for the truthful quest for ultimate success.

“I owe so much of my self and my life to my city, it will always be home to me. Chicago provided with the ‘know-how’ to be a survivor in music, and much in life. I learned how to be an individual and not just one in the crowd, to not ever be afraid of anyone, or anything. I was confidently able to grace the performance stages of the Arie Crown Theatre, The Chicago Theatre, the famous DuSuable Museum, and many other prominent landmark locations, thanks to my can-do Chicagoan attitude.”

“I’m putting the finishing touches on a special first project right now as we speak – a project that stands to make a defilingly huge impact on my career. This project is called ‘Not Another ChiRaqi’ – this is my very first official Mixtape release – I have been featured on the Young Money UnSigned Hype Mixtape Vol. 2 and the Coast to Coast Mixtape. I also have a single called “ Bad (And She Know It)” in rotation on the Gud Tymes Show , you can cop it on Ustore.com, iTunes, or via my reverbnation page. I’m working alot, so you can expect this to be a first of many more to come. I am always writing and composing, even when It seem like I’m just sitting there doing nothing, my mind is always working, always working on another musical hit.”

    Estrella Announces ‘Here I Am’

Scottish rock four-piece Estrella reveal the first single to be released from their second album. The much anticipated track, aptly named, “Here I Am’’ is set for release 24th November.

The inspiration for the track was drawn from the guys becoming fed up of being told they need to ‘get real jobs’, so in true musician style, they reacted by writing a killer song. Proud of what they do and echoing their own journey, the words ratify the need to follow your own fate.

The track rings true to Estrella’s energetic rock sound and the production is absolutely seamless. The thoughtful lyrics, teamed with powerful guitar riffs is the stuff rock hits are made of.

Some very talented veterans of the rock world have lent their hands to the making of Estrella’s new album and the album has a provenance most rock bands would envy.

“Here I am’’ was recorded at the infamous Rockfield Studios, Wales. The very studios in which Queen recorded hit, “Bohemian Rhapsody”. John T Sinclair, who has worked with rock heavyweights ‘Uriah Heep’, ‘The Cult’ and ‘Ozzy Osbourne band’, co-wrote and co-produced “Here I am”. Production on the second album was overseen by Nick Brine, who has worked with and contributed to the global success of legends, The Darkness, Bruce Springsteen and Oasis.

With this hearty mix of rocking talent coming together on one project, the new album is undeniably bound for greatness. You can hear their new single ‘Here I Am’ on the below:

Estrella have been moving from strength to strength over summer and have made appearances at a wealth of rock festivals. Dave Ritchie from Wildfire Festival (previously Les-Fest) described Estrella as,

“The most exciting and entertaining, live rock band in the country, Estrella give 100% every time, simply unmissable!”.

Hard Rock Hell Festival said, “These boys know how to rock!”.

With fans of the band including Classic Rock Magazine and XFM presenters Tom Russell and noted music tastemaker Jim Gellatly, as well as setting off on a European Tour in November with Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses ex-guitarist) you will be hearing plenty more of Estrella in the coming months

New Single by Indie Artist Godson is now available for Pre-order

After the official pre-order date launch on September 9th, Godson is set to debut his first official single off his debut EP album ‘Chilled Coffee’. The song, ‘Higher’ will launch on September 22nd as a radio version and features its own music video below. Fans can purchase the song in advanced for just $.69 on iTunes.

‘Higher’ is an old school style 3-min hip hop track, set with some heavy classical arrangement featuring vocals by the Hollywood based artist, Godson. The single’s story speaks on the everyday lives or people and the role music plays in it. It references to Eminem’s debut “Infinite” and the underground music scene – what it means to be successful, how to get there, and how other people are going through the same struggles. In the chorus, provides words of encouragement to others to tell their own life story, and focus to a character in the song – known only as Alice as a reference to Alice in Wonderland during the following verse.

“My brother Elijah wrote and played the piano balled in the song, and co-wrote the lyrics to ‘Higher’. We wanted our collaborative song to encourage people one more time to take the knowledge and strength they’ve gained and uplift others with it, and to never give up on their dreams,” says Aaron.

The song won the California edition of Coast2Coast’s “Hottest in the State 3” Mixtape contest on the 7th of August. Shot on location in Oldtown, Pasadena and Balboa Park, Encino. In the video, viewers will see Godson waking up in the morning, going through the cities and performing the song, reflecting on the scenery around him.

One fan, Alex wrote an insightful review of the single on the site ‘Review You’ stating, “Most of the time, the hip-hop influence on Chilled Coffee asserts itself rhythmically rather than with actual rapping. But the most obvious exception to that rule is ‘Higher’, which favors a jazzy alternative rap approach and is the most overtly vocal-minded tune on the album.,” Alex goes on to say, “It is the type of rapping that prevails on “Higher,” which fits in nicely with the funky yet smooth vibe that Godson is going for on Chilled Coffee. The rapping on ‘Higher’ is not incendiary, angry or in-your-face, and that is the type of rapping one generally associates with Digable Planets, Pete Miser or the Philadelphia-based Kuf Knotz. Alternative rap fans would do well to check ‘Higher’ out.”

    About the Artist(s):
Aaron Johnson, who is the face behind Godson, is a 21 year old California-native, illustrator, writer and producer who ‘loves to walk the line between the cutting edge and the nostalgic’. With no classical music training, Johnson is able to produce Jazz, Classical music, Hip Hop, and R&B music drawing from his own creative spirit. His current influences range from Quincy Jones to Rob Dougan and Nobuo Uematsu. Besides his EP, Johnson regularly collaborates with artists around the world, creating remixes of Top 40 track and even the composition for the short film ‘Friends Anyway’ by James Whitley. His album, Chilled Coffee took about nearly 2 years to make – with song mixes to be finalized this month.

Brother to Aaron, Elijah Johnson is a19-year old freelance illustrator, writer and director who lives in California. He goes by alias ‘Atlas’ and was the creative director behind the ‘Higher’ music video. To learn more about the artist, please visit: http://www.facebook.com/ArtbyAtlas

    Naylor’s Notes: Natural Habitz

“Nothing but the best, we’re making history tonight.”  While grinding all week, and writing music with artists from around the world.  Saturday they like to shine.  Check out what Natural Habitz had to say during their interview.

When did you start your band?
As the group is today, Natural Habitz was officially bound by contract with the current members in 2009 and have been together ever since.

    Which instruments do you play?
Dutchman, Dice Roll Em, and Meda are all vocalists. Kunstruct and his team the Streetburnerz are the producers of the group and Kunstruct is also one of the vocalists.

Describe your music interests and abilities.
Our musical interests are hip-hop but with that we like to collab with artists from different genres and other countries as well. One of our main abilities is effective songwriting techniques. To be an ill emcee and have longevity as a group, you have to be able to write songs with strong concepts as well as be able to be incredibly lyrical.

    What famous musicians inspire you?
Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Nas, Pharoahe Monch, Balck Thought (of the Roots), Q-Tip,Slum Villiage to name a few.  Also Classic Rock like-The Doors, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Chicago.  And Punk Bands like the Ramones and the Misfits and Music in general.

What is some of your best musical memories?
We started our career by doing mixed genre shows with punk bands; one of our fondest and scariest memories (shout out to Fox and his band for taking a chance on us) is the first time we performed in front of a Punk Rock crowd.  We didn’t know how they were going to take us, but once we started our high energy show, they loved it, and we had them moshing to hip-hop after our first song.  After that we never looked back.

DOUBLE-SALUTE to Fox and his then band Robert Paulson for believing in us and giving us that opportunity. If it wasn’t for them givin’ us that look, I don’t know if we would have gotten this far this fast.

What public events do you have coming up?
We are currently signed to a Management deal with, “PLATINUM DOOR ENTERTAINMENT,” which is headed up by some well-known and respected music industry professionals. Also, we are starting our relationship with a Booking company.  We have multiple shows being booked in the Southeast Region in Late September, November, and December. Also we are currently putting the finishing touches on several projects:

    1. Our crew (which includes us (Natural Habitz), Strata-G, Loonchie Bey, Tykoon Savy, Lil Homie Rich, AV, FloStrom Jones, and Nicky Slick) NRE – is putting out a mix-tape compilation album in 4th Quarter 2014 or 1st Quarter 2015 called, “THE GIFTED CLASS.” It will be available digitally and in FYE stores, one stops and Mom and Pops Shops via NRE/CITICO MUZIK. This will be followed up by an NRE CREW album and shows in 2015.
    2. Meda of Natural Habitz will be releasing her long awaited debut album, “Blasting Off Sector One,” also in the 4th Quarter 2014. It will be available digitally and in FYE stores, one stops and Mom and Pops Shops. She is also currently finishing up with famed French Hip-Hop Producer, KYO ITACHI called MAGNETIXX that is slated to be released in LATE 2014 or in 2015.  It will be available via Shinigamie Records.
    3. Natural Habitz will be including a link to a FREE EP inside of Meda’s Blasting Off album (TITLE TBD) as a surprise for all our fans.
    4. Also Be on the lookout for Natural habitz doing collabs with singers from all over the world!!!! #SALUTE to all the singers we work with!!!

What would you say to musicians who are just starting out?
Be creative and don’t follow what everyone else is doing.  Create your own lane and don’t be afraid to think outside the box.

How do you balance your music with your family and friends?
You have to have a healthy balance of time with both to stay sane in this business lolololol. We just try to make time for both situations.

Should we be expecting anything new to be released?

    1. A NEW NATURAL HABITZ PROJECT called, “CREATURES OF THE KULTURE,” is slated to release in the 2nd QUARTER of 2015 or sooner. It will be available digitally and in FYE stores, one stops and Mom and Pops Shops via NRE/CITICO MUZIK.
    2. Natural Habitz is also working on another project overseen by their management company PLATINUM DOOR ENTERTAINMENT as well (TITLE TBD)

Where can we follow your career at?

Author Spotlight: Meet Johnny Naylor & 1st Shot Music

What’s up everybody!  It’s Johnny Naylor, here to talk a little bit about what it is that I do.  Well, I can’t say I was quite sure through the beginning stages of 1st Shot Music.  You don’t have to know where I’m from to find out where I’ve been.

I grew up just south of St. Louis, MO.  In the county.  We liked our music loud, and partied even louder.  Little did I know about the passion that screamed inside of me for music.  To write it, create it, sing it, and introduce it.  So it began, I am now proud to say that 1st Shot Music has accumulated over 11,000 viewings, with over 250 visitors per day to view these original artists.

Although, it wasn’t always like this.  It started in my father’s basement with a cheap laptop.  I just learned how to play and sing, as I’ve been doing so for a couple of years now.  While at home with the kid’s, if I wasn’t feeding them, or changing diapers, I was playing guitar, and net-working. The relationship with my children’s mother was a bit shaky from the beginning.

With all negatives must come a positive, and I’m proud to say that they are both in school, my daughter is in 1st grade, and my son in kindergarten.  I must have done something right. (laughs)  They are extremely healthy, and all in all just fun to be around. If you ask me, well of course they get their looks from their father.  (laughs) ;)With all of this, I urge you to surround yourself with positive people who are gonna stand by your side through thick and thin. Never let anybody steal your dreams.  They’re yours!  No matter how tough the storm get’s, always keep sailing, because you never know when something life changing might happen.

While riding the storm out, I am pleased to say that 1st Shot Music has established many open door ways for the original artist. Averaging over 250 visitors per day to my work, celebrities who follow, are such as: Cody Wolfe Music, Tyler Farr, Colt FordCarissa LeighKevin Costner & Modern West, Dan Chandler, Five Finger Death Punch, just to name a few.

I am very proud to announce that you may submit your music for more than one opportunity.  Submit to get featured both on 1st Shot Music, and Naylor’s Notes on Jammerzine today. All you need is the passion within you to move forward.  Surround yourself with positive people, and don’t ever stop shining!!!

    With Passion,

    Johnny Naylor

    Jay Charmed on ‘Lovers Lane’

The songwriter and performer of hip hop known as Jay Charm has released his latest EP record, “Lovers Lane.” The EP is composed of five original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 15 minutes. It has proudly been published as an independent release entirely without support of the corporate music industry. It is the most recent official release from Charm since his June 2013 record, the “P – Game” EP. Innovative, upbeat, and full of urban poetry of the highest caliber, “Lovers Lane” by Jay Charm is a record that defines his style better than anything Charm has released before.

Jay Charm cites as main artistic influences Jay-Z, Jada Kiss, and Freeway. He also notes in a recent interview, “As a teenager I started to like Eminem, Son the RNB Side, Michael Jackson, and of course Janet Jackson and TLC are awesome! I was also a Big Punisher and Brian McKnight fan.”

Still, Charm’s history as a youth in the East Coast’s urban center of Philadelphia molded his art at least as much as his favorite music has. He says of this, “Due to the life I lived in the streets of Philadelphia, I grew up hypnotized by music and influenced by words. The seduction of sex, violence and drugs drew me ever closer in touch with my own personal musical talent and entertainment abilities. Overall my own life lessons, experiences, and circumstantial mishaps are the major inspirational influence over my music.”

Though only 26 years old at the time of this writing, Charm has already published more than 14 official releases in one form or another. His repertoire includes nine video shoots at last count, with more on the way. He has already performed at countless venues with several popular artists, such as DJ Kay Slay and Young Jeezy. His countless cameo appearances have placed him with living legends like Fred the GodSon, Mack Maine, Cory Gunz, Uncle Murda, and many, many more.

Speaking of the themes in his music, Jay Charm says, “My music usually pertains to something that has occurred in my life, so when I’m in front of an audience performing, I give more than just a performance; I give a connection, a real life experience. From my anecdotes of victory and strife I hype crowds with tales of triumph. I want to empower those who wanna give up. I want to free those who shy away from confidence. I have a message and a desire to positively influence the youth of yesterday, today and tomorrow.”

Proof of Charm’s desire to change the world is evident in the not-for-profit organization he co-founded to support the family of his friend, called Brian’s Army, the letter of recognition he received from Suffolk County legislator, Kate Browning, and an honorable mention from the town of Brookhaven.

“Lovers Lane” by Jay Charm is available online worldwide.

Australia’s Essick Debuts with Atrium Atrium 11/21

Emerging from Brisbane’s fertile music scene, Essick’s eleven-track debut album is full of simple yet effective hooks, tight, complex drum patterns, synthesised electronic flourishes and intricate guitar lines.

Musicians Ravi Das and Andrew MacDougall met in high school and later became close friends, bonding over a shared appreciation of Battles, BADBADNOTGOOD and Seekae, but their first foray into playing music together came much later when Andrew’s band was looking for a bass player. That band dissolved not long after and Ravi went back to his bedroom project Cherry Spliff. Ravi completed a track ‘Atriums’, Andrew instantly fell in love with it, and the collaboration that is Essick was born.

Over the next year and a half, the pair worked tirelessly to hone their songwriting skills before entering Bedlam Studios in late 2013 where they spent five days working with producer Steve Kempnich. They enlisted the help of Brock Weston to replace most drum machines with his swift snare rolls and powerful tom whacks, bringing added energy and attitude to each song. Utilising two synthesisers (specifically a Prophet 08 and a Moog Voyager) and countless guitars to fill in the sound, Kempnich’s production gives each instrument and vocal sound more than enough room to breath. Ravi and Andrew had created the album they set out to produce and were ready to take it to a wider audience.

On the 12th of November 2013, less than a month after the album’s completion, Ravi Das passed away in a horrible drowning accident. A promise was made to Ravi’s family that his music would be released for the world to hear.

Opener ‘Atriums’ sets the tone for the record, its delayed guitar and frenetic drum patterns are present throughout all eleven tracks. Album centrepiece ‘Indica’ begins with a muted guitar before haunting vocals creep in below a simple melody. Essick’s first single ‘Ghost Towns’ brings the energy to fever pitch, teasing the chorus hook early on before revealing it full force like a bull seeing red.

Essick, a mongrelised version of James Blake and Deep Sea Arcade on dexamphetamines, are primed and ready to release this masterful collection of songs into the world and let them spread their wings.

First Listen: Gareth Paul – Live In Me

    Gareth-Paul-On-Guitar

Born in Croydon in 1994, Gareth Paul grew up with a vocal talent that wouldn’t find external acknowledgment until his late teens. He became a dedicated swimmer, competing to a high level in London and eventually moving on to becoming a swimming teacher, something he was able to swiftly excel in. But it was his creativity that continued to permeate his mentality; raw and unfocused, his first attempt to channel it was through studying drama at high school and sixth form.

In 2012, aged 18, Gareth was introduced via his childhood friend Aron Dowdell (aka A.D.)to Tim ‘Latent’ Plant. At this point, Latent was working primarily with youth groups on his project ‘Latent Music Group’, aimed at providing young people with opportunities to experience making music and recording in studios. Aron knew of Gareth’s creativity and largely hidden singing aptitude, and also of Latent’s plans to gather a roster of talent to launch his record label. After one audition, welcoming Gareth into the fold was a no-brainer for Latent, and as Will-Powerz became involved via his friendship with Gareth, the course was set for the launch of Latent’s Records.

Between this period in late 2012 and the year that passed until the record label’s launch, Gareth spent a lot of time learning about songwriting and recording with Latent and Will-Powerz. With the latter he worked on several collaborations, some of which have now been released (such as ‘Only The Good’ and ‘Watching Me’). From Latent, Gareth began the process of selecting instrumentals from the producer’s large back catalogue to use for putting together a debut EP. From the record label’s launch in late 2013, work on what would become ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ was well and truly underway.

Through his work with Latent and Will-Powerz, Gareth gained the experience to hone the skills required to write and record successfully. The majority of ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ was written collaboratively with Will-Powerz (hence Will’s heavy presence as a featured artist throughout). Gareth learnt how to interpret an instrumental, how to relate his thoughts and experiences musically, and how to construct a song with the right balance of intelligent lyrics and emotional content. The culmination of these lessons thus far is the first single release from ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ entitled ‘Live In Me’ – the first song to be written entirely by Gareth Paul. Soulful and poignant, the song is an emotional recollection of a dream that had a powerful impact on Gareth’s life, and has received fantastic responses from fans across social media outlets.

With the release date of ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ set as September 28th 2014, Gareth is in the opening chapter of his time as a skilled and talented recording artist and songwriter. As Latent’s Records marches towards its bright horizons, Gareth is guaranteed to be an outstanding member of the parade, and the Croydon native is set to become a feature of the flourishing UK indie music revolution in the near future.

Daily Dose: The Open Feel – You’re Still Running

    10599239_899433813417271_3197166183948491404_n

The Open Feel is an up and coming dreamy alternative rock band that would fit in brilliantly at a festival featuring Siouxsie and the Banshees, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Silversun Pickups, Muse, The Joy Formidable, The XX and Deerhunter. Started on the outskirts of Los Angeles by Katie Harris (vocals, guitars) and Tom Brayton (Drums, Bass), The Open Feel began as a songwriting collaboration between the long time couple and evolved into a full fledged band after months of late night studio sessions began to crystallize into a sound worthy of pursuing.

The Open Feel is now recording singles and releasing them as they are finished. The newest single “You’re Still Running” was released in September 2014.

First Listen: Estado Novo – The Method

    ESTADO-promo-01small

The idea was to make classic rock album. To make the recordings within one weekend and make it happen in analog with 2 -inch tape machine and traditional mic set-up etc.

The agenda was straight forward – no compromise! No compromise in music. No compromise in lyrics. No compromise in sound. Without too much overdubs and too much analyze – “let it go with a flow” -idea. Leaving the result as rough and alive as possible with all the moments and coincidences and accidents.

The album sounds timeless. Either You prefer to choose LP, mp3 or CD – none of the original feeling has been lost.

    Choose wise. Choose Estado Novo.

Stan Dibben Shines Light on Post-war Racing in Documentary

‘No Ordinary Passenger,’ the short film about Stan Dibben, a motorcycle racing legend of the 1950’s, will be featured at The 2nd annual Motorcycle Film Festival in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, September 27th 2014.

The film stars Dibben, a remarkably witty and spry British man, now 88 years of age, who in 1953 won the World Motorcycle Sidecar Championship. Mr. Dibben, who raced at the Isle of Man and elsewhere in the post- war era, recounts the excitement and perils of sidecar racing in 1950’s Europe. In the film, Mr. Dibben takes great umbrage at the term ‘passenger’ as applied to his role in racing.

“Racing sidecar in the Grand Prix era required stamina, fitness and fearlessness'”says Dibben. “The passenger and driver work together as a team, equally important, and the slightest miscalculation can lead to deadly results.”

“No Ordinary Passenger” had it’s US debut at the 2013 LA Sports Film Festival where it won a bronze medal. It won best short film at The British Documentary Film Festival earlier this year. It is the directorial debut of Cabell Hopkins, a London-based filmmaker and commercial producer.

“When I was a lad, Stan would drive me to school on occasion, and tell me stories of his remarkable life,” says Hopkins. “This film only scratches the surface of one the most interesting and accomplished men I’ve ever known.”

Festival co- founder Corinna Mantlo said, “The massive, youthful rise of today’s motorbike culture has inspired myriad filmmakers to produce two-wheel feature films. ‘No Ordinary Passenger’ provides today’s enthusiasts with a glimpse of Stan Dibben, a pioneer, a true innovator in his day.”

Dibben’s life story, one that takes him from the British Armed Forces in World War II to professional jazz trumpeter, to daredevil motorcycle racer and road tester, to businessman, inventor and beyond, is captured in his autobiography, ‘Hold On’ which is available as a digital download on Amazon.

    About the Motorcycle Film Festival
The Motorcycle Film Festival was founded in 2013 by a group of NYC motorcyclists and independent filmmakers, led by Jack Drury and Corinna Mantlo, to provide a home for motorcycle films from around the world, and give motorbike film enthusiasts an event to celebrate their favorite subject. It will be held on September 24–27, 2014 at The Gutter (200 North 14th Street, Williamsburg) in Brooklyn, New York. The festival will feature official screenings of short- and feature-length documentaries and narratives alongside more experimental films. Other events include screenings of classic films, filmmaker talks, an art exhibition, bands, bowling, and more. The Original Indie Arlo Guthrie Holds Family Reunion

Historic Newton will present “Arlo Guthrie & Guthrie Family Reunion” on Friday, November 21 at 7:30 PM at the 585-seat theatre located inside the architecturally acclaimed Newton North High School, 457 Walnut Street, Newton, MA 02460. For more information and sponsorship tickets starting at $175 which include VIP seating and after-show reception with Arlo Guthrie and the family, call: 617-796-1450.

Folk music icon Arlo Guthrie is not only coming to Newton, but he is coming with three generations of Guthries for an exclusive Boston-area appearance called “Guthrie Family Reunion.” This highly unique event leads up to an upcoming prestigious Carnegie Hall concert. Arlo carries on the Guthrie Family legacy as he shares his timeless stories and unforgettable classic tunes. As a celebrated artist in American music, his artistic presentations help bridge an often-divided world through his powerful spirit of song. “The Guthrie Family Reunion” brings his singular voice as both a singer-songwriter and social commentator to the stage, alongside his beloved children and grandkids.

Legendary folk icon and eldest son of America’s most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie will gather three generations of Guthries to perform Woody’s songs as well as new material written by various family members. “Guthrie Family Reunion” features Arlo alongside his son Abe, and daughters Cathy, Annie and Sarah Lee Guthrie support by singing songs and accompanying on acoustic guitars. Sarah Lee’s musical partner and husband Johnny Irion will lead songs and lend his stalwart guitar playing. The youngest generation of Guthrie kids, ranging in age from 7 to 22, will join in the fun on select songs for a rousing celebration just before Thanksgiving week.

    More About Arlo Guthrie:
Arlo Guthrie has been known to generations as a prolific songwriter, social commentator, master storyteller, actor and activist. Born in Coney Island, New York in 1947, Arlo is the eldest son of Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington’s Disease, and America’s most beloved singer/writer/philosopher/artist Woody Guthrie. Arlo has become an iconic figure in folk music in his own right with a distinguished and varied career spanning over fifty years.

Growing up Guthrie, Arlo was surrounded by such renowned artists as Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott to name only a few. Not surprisingly, Arlo drew from these influences and he in turn became a delineative figure bridging generations of folk. He and Pete Seeger created a legendary collaboration that was sustained for over forty years. The last Pete & Arlo show was in November 30, 2013 at Carnegie Hall, only a few months before Pete passed away at the age of 94.

In 1965 a teenaged Guthrie performed a “friendly gesture” that proved to be fateful. Arlo was arrested for littering, leading him to be deemed “not moral enough to join the army.” Guthrie attained international attention at age 19 by recounting the true events on the album Alice’s Restaurant in 1967. The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree, an 18 minute and 20 second partially sung comic monologue opposing the war and the backward reasoning of authority, has become an anti-establishment anthem and an essential part of Thanksgiving on rock stations worldwide. Alice’s Restaurant achieved platinum status and was made into a movie in 1969, in which Arlo played himself, by the esteemed director Arthur Penn. The year 1969 also brought Arlo to the rock festival of the ages, Woodstock. His appearance showcased Arlo’s chart-topping Coming Into Los Angeles, which was included on the multi-platinum Woodstock soundtrack and movie.

Daily Dose: Bubby Jackson – Remember

    10496090_791715484185599_723377686030266244_o

My name is Bubby Jackson. I’m a guitar player and songwriter from northeastern Maryland. I’m excited to be releasing my first indie collection, Wanna Know. This is a retrospective of sorts, and encompasses unreleased songs from the last ten years or so. Some of these have been demoed or performed live by myself and bands I’ve been part of, but this is the first time you get to hear fresh studio recordings updated for 2014. We did the recordings at Harlem Parlour in New York with producer/drummer extraordinaire, Sammy Merendino (Cyndi Lauper, Billy Joel, Hall & Oates, Kinky Boots Broadway, etc.) and engineer/co-producer, Derik Lee (everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Matchbox Twenty to Britney Spears to Broadway everything). Bass guitar and some additional recording was handled by my long-time friend, Ross Troy. I have tried to include a variety of song styles which showcase all of the different musical genres I enjoy – and I hope you’ll find something you like, too.

So, look around the website, enjoy the music and join the mailing list so I can keep you updated on any “Bubby News” or upcoming shows!

An IndieGoGo Funding Campaign’s Talent Search Breaks New Ground

Singing competitions, like ‘American Idol’, ‘X-Factor’, ‘So You Think You Can Sing,’ and others, attract tens of thousands of would-be future ‘Grammy winners’, who are left unselected and disappointed. But Gene Cartwright, a Pulitzer-nominated author, former Oprah guest author, and media producer, is offering new hope for many.

While Simon Cowel, and ‘American Idol,’ have little to worry about, the ‘My Songs, My Music, Your Voice’ campaign on IndieGoGo, is definitely a unique approach to discovering, recording and promoting deserving singing talent. Thanks to IndieGoGo, and this campaign, which concludes in late October, the public now has a direct means of helping to discover great singing talent—and getting recognition for it. How? By participating, and reaping rewards—perks. Cartwright insists, that while his voice and music are heard on the demo video here, his will in no way be, ‘The Voice.’

Charmaine Sylvers, formerly, of the top, family Pop/R&B/Soul group, ‘The Sylvers,’ has signed on as one of the judges, and believes this unique project is “a winner”. Other past and current music insiders/artists will be added to the list, and posted on the project site.

Campaign creator, Cartwright and his talented team stress: “We want to make clear, this is not simply a project to finance some limited vanity goal, but to give back by discovering great talent.” The project team invites all to see, hear, and judge—the campaign, that is. They point out that the “stirring song, ‘Live’,” in the presentation video, “is the title song in the album to be produced for the discovered talent.”

The full story is spelled out in great detail at IndieGoGo’s ‘My Songs, My Music, Your Voice.’ http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/my-songs-my-music-your-voice

The ‘My Songs, My Music, Your Voice’ project team makes clear they have only three (3) goals:

    1. Find ‘The Voice’ (to record in English and Spanish).
    2. Produce a CD Single and Album.
    3. Promote the newly-found talent to the record industry, while also releasing the music to the world.

The Project Manager says: “This album will happen. The only question for talent out there is: will she or he be a part of this new approach to discovering great music talent? Let the auditions begin!”

Singer/Songwriter Mary McGuire Featured at ArtPrize 2014

Performing for decades between Detroit, Martha’s Vineyard, Boston and Mackinac Island, singer/songwriter Mary McGuire has been accepted to the prestigious ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan (Vote Code: 56809). For 19 days, three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, become an open playing field where anyone can find a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters. Art from around the world pops up in every inch of downtown, and it’s all free and open to the public. The organizers share “It’s unorthodox, highly disruptive, and undeniably intriguing to the art world and the public alike.” A little unorthodox she, McGuire is the recipient of several Detroit Music Awards, most notably as Best Acoustic Artist. Influenced by underground Detroit Radio, she weaned herself on the music played by WABX, WWWW and WRIF as well as CKLW and WDRQ. In fact, she was the winning caller (number 11) on the hit radio station WDRQ and when the station doors opened, her 11 year old arms were loaded up with the entire Beatles discography. She promptly got a guitar—then guitar lessons. Since that day, she has been studying and writing then gigging along the highways across America. As a result, Mary found herself writing about where she was and what she saw from her unique perspective gleaned in the Upper Midwest.

Her song Love Struck was selected in the Time-based category by St. Cecilia’s Music Center. Collaborating with producer Chuck Alkazian at Pearl Sound Studio (Canton, MI) and performing with guitarist Erik Gustafson, bassist Gary Rasmussen, mandolinist Beth Wilusz, drummers Johnny Bee Badanjek, Shadowhawk Ellis and Chuck Alkazian has been a dream come true. As Mary puts it, “Love struck is how I have felt recording, writing and playing with this group of incredible artists. I realized the definition of Love Struck has never changed throughout the ages and thought to myself we have all been love struck in one way or another. It’s like being punched in the heart and there is no way out but to face it. It really inspired me to write from my experiences and from the experiences of others who have shared their moments of falling in love uncontrollably.” She continues, “I am honored to be included at St. Cecilia’s and am really looking forward to performing in such a historic venue.” St. Cecilia Music Center is the oldest arts organization in the region and is the music hub during ArtPrize. Again this year, St. Cecilia will be awarding $2,000 in PRIZE MONEY to five different musical genres based on the popular vote in each genre ($10,000 total.) Genres are pop/electronic; rock/blues; classical; jazz and folk/country. Listening stations located in the St. Cecilia library will feature recordings of all original compositions in the Time-based category. Cecilia will host two of the many busking stations that will be featured throughout the city on a daily basis for the first 10 days of the event. Mary will be performing from 3pm – 4pm, Saturday, September 27 at St. Cecilia’s Music Center.

Another venue to catch her performance is the Women’s City Club, which occupies the historic Sweet House in the Hill District of Grand Rapids. Martin Sweet was a young entrepreneur when he came to Grand Rapids in 1846. He dreamed of a distinguished and spacious home for his family and in the early 1860s built this home on East Fulton. This Heritage Hill two-story Italianate Villa home survives as one of the remaining examples of this style of architecture in the latter part of the 19th century. Join Mary for her concert and view the installations in this beautiful architectural gem from 3pm-4pm on Sunday, September 28.

Located in the Boardwalk Condo building, historic site of the world renowned Berkey & Gay Furniture Factory, Mary will be performing a few showcases at JD Reardon’s, a friendly hideaway for beer and food lovers alike. Offering 24 taps of only the best craft beers from celebrated breweries all over Michigan and the U.S. JD Reardon’s interior is a warm, inviting, relaxing and a perfect wooden music venue. They also boast one of the largest outdoor patios in the city with a view of the Boardwalk Condo landscaped courtyard, pool and fountain. Weather permitting she will perform outside on the open air patio surrounded by five floors of architectural magnificence overlooking the condos, it’s a magical space and place. Her first performance happens the night before the opening of ArtPrize from 6pm-8pm, Tuesday, September 23 for the Boardwalk Condos Sneak Peek Event, which is open to the public. Then she will be playing from 6pm-8pm, Saturday, September 27 and again from 6pm-8pm on Saturday, October 4 in the preservation rich Monroe North/Belknap neighborhood.

Daily Dose: World5 – Heart of the World

    331404_307601615933318_887164640_o

Formed summer 2011, WORLD5 is the Pop-Rock band formed around lead singer and Grammy Award winner Pat Hunt.

WORLD5´s founding members and old friends, guitarist Steffen Goeres, saxophonist Stephan Goessl and drummer Raimund Breitfeld have played together since their teenage years. Although life and personal projects put them in different locations around the globe, they kept alive the desires of making music together over the years.

Realizing that very long distances separate them physically but not musically, they recorded their first album “Global Experience” over 3 continents together with former members Don Bruner and Roland Childs.

The bands global influenced pop-rock sound drew the interest of Texans Pat Hunt and Randy Miller, who produced the bands first album, and they joined the band December 2012. June 2013 brought the departure of saxophonist Stephan Goessl and the arrival of Texan guitarist Joe Gavito. And so, the current World5 lineup is once again complete.
Pat Hunt, Randy Miller, and Joe Gavito have played and worked together as musicians, songwriters and producers for 30 years in the music business.

Pat has opened for acts such as Al Jarreau, The Pointer Sisters, Patti LaBelle, The Temptations, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, The Spinners, George Jones and many more. Pat has also produced CD’s for the American country icon Mickey Gilley of Urban Cowboy fame as well as reggae legend Johnny Nash. Pat was a finalist on the original Star Search.
He has co-written songs for Jennifer Holliday “I Never Thought I’d Fall In Love Again”, “After She’s Gone” for Mickey Gilley, and with Randy “Con Todo El Corazon” for the Grammy winning double platinum, international group La Mafia. Pat has played and arranged on five Grammy nominated CD’s and won a Grammy.

Randy made his name as a producer for the Latin´s Super Group La Mafia, producing 4 Grammy winning albums and getting 16 Grammy nominations along the way. His client list includes Marc Anthony, Kings X, Goldie Hawn, Burt Bacharach and Laura C. Singer-songwriter Johnny Nash hired Randy to remix the classic ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ and is continuing to work on several new albums with him.

Originally a drummer, guitar has been Joe Gavito’s weapon of choice for virtually all of his professional life. Joe has been associated with Randy and Pat for years on the stage and in the studio, playing on projects by Mickey Gilley, Johnny Nash, Randy Miller, Pat Hunt, and many more. Joe has also performed on stage with The Original Texas Playboys, Ezra Charles and The Works, Charlie Pride, Mason Dixon, Frank Martin Gilligan, Larry Gatlin, Johnny Nash, BJ Thomas, The Platters, Israel Houghton and songwriters Alex Harvey, Whitey Schaffer and Freddie Powers.

River Child Knows How To ‘Start Over Again’ with debut EP

Based in North London, River Child is a solo singer-songwriter who specialises in classy, soulful indie/folk. With an off kilter, rare and distinctive voice, he is an ex-busker who has swapped the streets for the studio after getting some incredible feedback for his live performances.

For a taste of what River Child is all about, here is the title track from the EP, a treat of jangling guitars and that affecting vocal:

Listen Here to the new single here:

Relatively new to the London scene having started out just under a year ago, River Child is already assured in his sound. By turns haunting and melodic, it’s music that finds its way under your skin and stays there.

Helped by producer Ian Wallman, this EP is certainly something for fans of independently minded music to savour. When it comes to River Child, there are no angles or spun news stories – simply good quality music.
